Welcome to our third thread on PCOS. What we don't know isn't really worth knowing. We're a friendly bunch of women who have a few things in common. We all have either PCOS or unexplained infertility and we're all on a mission for a BFP!!!!

For new members, and old alike here are the links to our 1st and 2nd threads:

Yeah I think you are right Satsooma, I think I'm picking up on any old twinge. My last cycle was 150days+ so there's no way I'd be on a 28 day cycle now! Although I don't really know what to do, do I continue with opk's but it could be 100 days again,
So I do a pretty test at any point? Or just wait for AF?!? Things are Never simple Are they?
I hope your test tomorrow shows BFP satsooma FX , and it sounds really good for you too boggle.

My DH did a SA test a few months ago and the results were low count which is rubbish but good motility, so I guess every cloud has a silver lining... maybe you could ring your GP summer and they will have more info for you? X

satsoooma · 13/01/2017 18:58

Well I had a 232 day cycle followed by a 32 day cycle, so anything is possible! My solution to the long cycles was just to bulk buy cheap tests off Amazon and test once a week. Otherwise you'd never know whether you were having a crazy long cycle, or were practically about to give birth Grin

satsoooma · 13/01/2017 19:01

FWIW, once you are seeing a fertility specialist, you will likely be prescribed something to jump start your period whenever a cycle goes beyond 35 days. So I would treat something like days 12-21 as days worth doing OPKs (if you want to). And days 28-35 as days where it might be worth doing a pregnancy test. Beyond that, there is a good chance that you have not ovulated that cycle. Then you just have to wait for your body to realize and get back on track.

Elly1685 · 13/01/2017 19:16

That's really helpful thanks satsooma xx

Iamchanging · 14/01/2017 08:58

Hi all,
My three week period has finally finished, so now I'm just counting down the days until my appointment. Hope that you all have a lovely weekend!

satsoooma · 14/01/2017 13:24

CD32 here. Still no period, still not pregnant Sad

At some point I will have to think about taking provera to jump start the next cycle. I have the pills on hand, but have never actually taken provera before. Any tips, or side effects, I should know about?

Elly1685 · 14/01/2017 15:05

Satsooma do you know if you've ovulated this cycle?

satsoooma · 14/01/2017 16:04

I don't know. I didn't get a scan or blood test this time round, as the clomid was working just fine. So the clinic gave me some provera, a 6 month supply of clomid and left me to get on with it.

I also didn't really bother with OPKs, as it was right during Christmas and I was staying with relatives. I was pretty sure I had ovulation pains though.

Elly1685 · 14/01/2017 18:00

Is it worth holding off a bit longer in case you ovulated a bit later? Maybe you've just got a longer cycle this time? I've not had provera or any medication before so can't really offer any useful advice (my first appointments on the 27th so hoping I get some help there)

SummerHopin · 14/01/2017 18:31

I had provera to induce a period so I could have bloods done. Got on fine with it nothing to report just felt my body temp was a bit raised.

I'm surprised you've been given clomid and told to get on with it though? I thought you had to go back for scans to check follicle sizes etc whilst on that? Like boggle is doing?

SummerHopin · 14/01/2017 18:35

DH and I have been chatting today about what to do when 3 months is ip on metformin. Consultant said we could either go into clomid or we could do a lap and dye to double check everything else was ok.

If money and time were no object what would you ladies do? I'm swaying towards a lap and dye to make sure all else is ok so we don't end up doing multiple clomid rounds only to find out they would never have worked anyway.

......but then I change my mind.

It's all hypothetical at the moment. Just discussing it.

satsoooma · 14/01/2017 19:47

Thanks for the info summer. I guess different clinics have different standards about scans and such.

I've also been thinking about a lap and dye. I have not been offered one, but maybe I should ask. I've heard it hurts a bit though?

Can you start clomid straight away and just do the lap and dye whenever an appointment is available?

YouBoggleMyMind · 14/01/2017 20:30

satsooma, if you've had a miscarriage or a chemical pregnancy, it isn't likely you'll need a lap and dye as you'll have been pregnant? I was also told to wait until cd35 before counting myself out and starting provera to induce AF. Just make sure you have a negative test.

It frustrates me that different clinics have different rules on scans and bloods. It should be one thing for all.

NeverGoOutOfStyle · 15/01/2017 09:54

So does a lap and dye just check that everything is fine regarding tubes etc? Excuse my ignorance when it comes to treatments.

I got a letter yesterday telling me I have an appointment for an ultrasound on Friday so they should have those results to look at at my endocrinology appointment on the 30th. Starting to think about questions I have for them now. Do any of you ladies have any questions you wish you'd ask of a specialist earlier?

I was sat at the side of the ice rink last night with DSS and of course, for the first time in months DP's team mates pregnant girlfriend decides to come sit with us and chat (she normally ignores us because she has a degree of contempt for all other women Hmm) almost constantly about her pregnancy and what a surprise it was, so I feel like I really have perfected my ability to smile and nod without saying much. I think DSS may have put fear into her though, because he was playing up as much as possible haha.

satsoooma · 15/01/2017 11:32

You are right about the chemical pregnancy boggle. In the back of my mind I am not sure if I imagined the line. Or maybe it was an evaporation line or something.

Style: I wish I had asked more about what treatments would be offered if Clomid does not work. And for an explanation of why they didn't try a lap and dye first etc.

A lap and dye checks that your fallopian tubes are not blocked. They introduce some dye through the cervix into your uterus and fallopian tubes. Then do an xray to see if it has travelled through the tubes, or if they are blocked.

SummerHopin · 15/01/2017 18:58

Yeah a lap and dye checks the tubes etc and also checks for any other anatomical issues that can't be seen on an ultrasound. The way my consultant explained it to me was that if clomid doesn't work then this is the next step to see if there is anything else going on, but some choose to have it done at the start to rule out any additional complications.

I've never had even a hint of a BFP so I don't have any assurances that there isn't anything more wrong. Clomid will be the next option from NHS but the wait is long, so weighing up having a l and d. It is invasive and requires anaesthetic yes.

js10kjm · 16/01/2017 00:00

Hi,

Been of this a while but I'm back!

Call me Kelly.

Anyway, so I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years ago which affects me in the way that I go through times of being constantly on my period (worst I've had was 6 months on constantly). Me and my husband have just started TTC (first time) and I've been put on provera to help regulate my periods. Bummer is that while on provera the gynaecologist has said not to TTC so that's going to delay things longer than we wanted...3 months seems like a really long time and if it doesn't work she said to continue for another 3 months ... :-(

Anyone had experience of Provera/what to expect? I have actually had 2 or 3 normal periods recently so I am not sure whether to leave it a bit and see if it stays regulated. Advice?

Kelly x

NeverGoOutOfStyle · 16/01/2017 00:07

Satsoooma & SummerHopin Thank you for explaining that, I'd heard it mentioned and just a google but just thought I'd be sure I'm not getting it confused with something else. I think knowing that and reading your post above I'd be inclined to agree with doing the lap and dye to be sure nothing like that was the issue and clomid wouldn't have worked because of it.

I think I will definitely ask what the options all are if I am not ovulating, as I suspect I'm not ovulating since I haven't had a positive OPK, and sometimes think the 'symptoms' I see are more wishful thinking than anything else. Since we're not at that year mark, I don't think they would offer me anything like Clomid just yet, and I sort of expect a bit of 'Oh but you're so young!' but hopefully they will still take me seriously. Trying to look on the bright side and say that even if whatever treatment they offer doesn't help me get pregnant, it might help me get some other symptoms under control, like the awful dark facial hair that survived 8 laser hair removal sessions Angry

YouBoggleMyMind · 16/01/2017 08:42

Well ladies, I'm officially in the 2WW. According to my app, AF should be due Monday 30th... eep

YouBoggleMyMind · 16/01/2017 09:24

Hi Kelly, welcome back.
Provera was fine and gave me know side effects but it was to start AF, not control existing AF so I'm not sure how much I can help. I took 1 tablet twice a day for 7 days I think and then waited another week for AF to show her ugly face. If they've become more regular it might be worth holding off as you may not need it.

I was offered a lap and dye with ovarian diathermy (drilling) but declined it due to the risk of ovarian failure. Plus I'd had a chemical pregnancy by this point so figured I knew I could actually conceive.

I just hope I get some good news in a couple of weeks...

Found out last week that my DHs cousin went to her 12 week scan to be told baby was dead and when she had a D & C she haemorrhaged and had to have a blood transfusion. It now appears she may have had a partial molar pregnancy and is awaiting test results. She also has a UTI. She's been through a proper rough time, bless her. I really feel for her.

How are we all on this grey and rainy Monday? Xxx

Elly1685 · 16/01/2017 18:40

That sounds awful about your DH'a cousin boggle, poor thing.

These questions are really helpful as I have my first appointment with the hospital on the 27th, however I was referred to the consultant ages ago, was sent to see a doctor in October and I was in their 5 minutes when he said 'there's nothing I can do for you you need to see a consultant' so I came out in a stinking mood as it was a complete waste of time, an appointment has been made for me with the consultant in another hospital now and found out it's actually with a specialist nurse ?!? So I don't know if she will be able to prescribe medication or do much ? Has anyone else been in this situation??

YouBoggleMyMind · 16/01/2017 19:14

I suspect the nurse will be able to give you medication and a Dr will just sign the prescription. If the nurse is specialist she should know her stuff.

Xx

Is there a way to know whether you're ovulating or not with PCOS ladies? Do any of the usual methods work for us?
