Has anyone had a BFN after af due but then gone on to have a BFP?

Hi ladies, I'm on cycle 2 ttc number 2. I've kept a log of all my previous cycles and my cycle is 28 days long. I've not had irregular cycles and have always had af on the date it's due.

Prior to ds my cycles were 30 days and after having him they've been 28 days.

I am now 3 days late for af and around 14 dpo. I tested yesterday afternoon using a freedom test. DH picked it up from tesco for £1.99. I was hoping for a FR Blush. So I tested and it was BFN. If I had not tested then today I'd be convinced that I'm pregnant as I'm not usually ever late for af and there is no sign of her.

Could it still be possible that I'm pregnant? Have anyone of you ever tested - after af was due but then gone on to discover a bean? X

Still no af for me and I'm 4 days late. Don't want to test because I don't like seeing bfn. Thanks to everyone who has posted so far x

Caved and tested again this morning (6 days late) - BFN. So confused!

Quite common - it can be that you have low base HCG (nothing to worry about), late implantation and a 72h doubling time rather than 48. Again, nothing to worry about. You won't get a BFP until HCG hits 10 for sensitive tests or 25 for normal tests, with on-the-cusp readings being faint, you'll need a level of more like 15 or 30 for it to show up strongly.

If you implanted on day 10, had a base HCG level of 1, and a 72h doubling time, it would go like this:

DPO 10 HCG 1
DPO 13 HCG 2
DPO 16 HCG 4
DPO 19 HCG 8 (Possibly a very faint positive on a very sensitive test)
DPO 22 HCG 16 (Good positive on a sensitive test, negative on a normal test)
DPO 25 HCG 32 (Good positive on any test)

If you're still getting negatives after that point, it's likely that you didn't ovulate when you thought you did, meaning that either AF will be later or you'll have to wait longer for a positive.

Good luck everyone!

(Just for comparison) - if you had implanted early, say on 7dpo, have a 48h doubling time and a higher base (non-pregnant) HCG level the progression would look more like this:

DPO 7 HCG 4
DPO 9 HCG 8 (Possibly a very faint positive on a very sensitive test)
DPO 11 HCG 16 (Good positive on a sensitive test, negative on a normal test)
DPO 13 HCG 32 (Good positive on any test)

That's why some women get early positives and some have to wait longer. It doesn't mean anything is wrong. It's just variance in the way that a pregnancy develops in the early days.

I had 6 BFN and was a week late before getting a BFP. I knew I was pregnant but kept getting the BFNs. I should have bought shares in pregnancy test companies. That BFP is 4 years old now. Good luck, I hope everyone ttc gets their much hoped for BFP soon

Bisquick · 29/11/2016 08:00

This happened to me too. I had long (but not v irregular) cycles of 30-31 days. Had BFNs for a week (I stupidly bought a multipack of cheapo tests) in the run up to AF. Then stopped testing. 2 days after AF due just felt super emotional on the way home from work and burst into tears on the tube (no reason at all!!) - bought a couple of Sainsbury's blue dye tests and had a very faint BFP. Currently 28 weeks pregnant. Fingers crossed for everyone waiting to test!!

bertiebotts that's really interesting, certainly fills me with some hope! Out of interest, if I were to be pg and not testing positive until very very late, does that affect the EDD? Would I still count 40 wks from the 1st day of my last period regardless of implantation?

Last period was 17th Oct and have a 37 day cycle so I think I'm around 4 weeks pg due on 2nd Aug (if AF doesn't show up)...

janiPop · 30/11/2016 10:21

Sorry about the bfn jammy Sad. I'm 5 days late today and don't want to test. It's honestly easier seeing af than a BFN! I might wait until Friday if no af.

bertiebotts thank you for your informative post. It gave me a glimmer of hope that even at 13/14 dpo it may still have been to early for me to test although I'm still trying to be realistic about it!

jammy I think ovulating or implanting late would affect your dd if you were to be pregnant and the date would then be adjusted at a dating scan. So even though initially a pregnancy is dated from lmp that would be adjusted according to the measurements and would account for late conception

So this morning af arrived 7 days Angry. I've kept a note of my cycles since April 2014 and this is the first time I've been late without being pregnant. I've been pregnant 3 times with 2 mc and ds.

Just glad that af is here now. Hope you have better luck jammy

Jammy I don't know but I think jani is right, use your last period until you get a dating scan.

janiPop sorry to hear about AF. At least you know what's happening though.

JammyC · 01/12/2016 18:50

janipop oh dear, sorry to hear that after such a wait. On the plus side, it means you can drink and enjoy christmas and new year!

8 days overdue now, still BFN. Even bought a FRER yesterday and it was negative. Phoned the GP and they are giving me a phone consultation on Monday as it "isn't deemed urgent". I need to know damn it!

janiPop · 02/12/2016 14:06

jammy I think it'll just be a case of waiting and watching out for either a BFP or af. Do you know if you've already ovulated this cycle?

Still testing negative, AF now 1wk 3 days late. Anyone tested positive 2 weeks late?! Am going to try and hold off testing until Wednesday when I'll be 2 weeks late.

powerpuffer · 03/12/2016 13:26

I'm a day late and BFN but lots of symptoms. Fingers crossed for us all!

haveacupoftea · 04/12/2016 12:41

This happened to me, turns out I just hadn't ovulated that cycle. First time in 30 years but apparantly it is quite common. At this stage I think it would be beneficial for your mental health to presume that you are not pregnant.

Sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear, but the stress can be very severe and I wish someone had just told me it is really very unlikely that you'll be pregnant with a negative hpt a week after your period due date.

Your time will come, but I don't think that time is now Flowers

C20S20G · 16/10/2020 11:05

@JammyC Hi! Really old post but I’m in the same boat as you at the moment. AF over a week late but BFN on all FRER tests. Did you end up being pregnant or did the witch turn up? Xx
