Chemical pregnancy with mirena

Has anyone had a chemical pregnancy with mirena?

I've had mine in for four years since a therapeutic laparoscopy for endometriosis. I've got on quite well with it, I get sporadic bleeding and pain but nothing like I was having before.

Over the past week or so I've been having so many pregnancy symptoms. I'm exhausted, nauseous, have had a bit of light pink bleeding and sharp pain which has now gone, sore swollen boobs, bleeding gums, really vivid dreams, and have developed an immediate gag reaction to onions, which I've always liked. It's making our dinner options v limited I thought it was just mirena symptoms but I've been googling and apparently chemical pregnancies are fairly common with mirena. Has anyone got any experience of this? Haven't tested but am tempted to buy one to do tomorrow.

Happened to me many of times with the coil and once after I had it removed.

A chemical pregnancy is a term for a miscarriage prior to six weeks, so I doubt that is what is happening. what you seem to mean is that you are having pregnancy symptoms. This is because the hormone in the Mirena coil, levonorgesterel, is a synthetic progesterone. Progesterone is high in pregnancy, the coil is providing contraception because your body is tricked into thinking you are already pregnant. So yes, it is very much possible that the coil is giving you pregnancy type side effects.

Sounds like a confusion with the term chemical pregnancy, which is a very early miscarriage and is a very upsetting thing to go through.

It sounds like a lot of pregnancy related symptoms, so I would take a test to be on the safe side, but it could very well be that for some reason the progesterone in the coil is causing you to have these symptoms randomly.

Take a test is the only way to see what's happening.

I did mean chemical pregnancy, which is apparently quite possible with mirena and there are lots of people online who have had them with one in, and if it does happen you're advised to get it taken out as you're at risk of an ectopic pregnancy. the marked difference in symptoms is what made me think it could be different to the usual mirena symptoms. I'll speak to a doctor - would be a pain to have to have it taken out as it's the only kind of LARC I've ever not been permanently miserable with.

My reason for saying you didn't mean a chemical pregnancy is that it is likely you would be bleeding (my CP's have all involved a great deal) and in pain if it was a chemical pregnancy, not unlike a very heavy period. Some women don't have extreme pain but as you didn't mention heavy bleeding or pain just general pregnancy symptoms it wouldn't suggest IMO a chemical pregnancy.

Your best to take a test.

I had what most people would probably consider very bad pain (normal for me as I have severe endometriosis) on Sunday when I started bleeding, but the bleeding was light and has now gone (along with, fingers crossed, the rest of the unusual symptoms) so perhaps you are right. I expect that if I took a test now it would be negative even if it might ever have been positive. I just hate the sensation of not knowing what my body is doing and why!

I would pop to your GP, if your having pregnancy symptoms after bleeding and pain then it might still show up on a sensitive pregnancy test, you may be best to get a pink line one (early response or a superdrug early response) sorry if you already know this :)

I had the same I have the iud due to endometriosis but the other week I had a positive pregnancy test followed by few negatives but been cramping really bad to the point where can’t get out of bed and took myself the the gyane emergency room as it got so bad and been Googling and said it could be sign of chemical pregnancy and I’m not sure what it could be but still struggling with pain now and spotting?? Any thoughts anyone
