hi, i'm new to MN. Had my 1st m/c in Dec 2002 followed by D&C. Took 9 months to conceive DS who is now 2.7 and light of our lives. Have been trying since he was 1 for no. 2. Conceived May 06 and spontaneous m/c at 8 weeks in July. Amazingly conceived again 3 months later and I thought everything was going so well. Felt very pregnant, had all the symptoms, but found out at 11+2 that although the pg sac was growing (hence all my symptoms) the foetal pole had stopped growing at 6/7 weeks. So D&C again in December. Had a strange AF last week, probably due to D&C and got an appt with specialist next week, with regard to looking at any potential problems. Don't know why I've had m/cs and am desperate for another baby and sibling for DS. Any advice / positive stories? Am feeling rather desperate as I'm 38 and scared that a) won't get pg again, and b) it'll end in m/c again thanks

I'm sorry about your mcs.
I'm in a fairly similar position to you - mc (5 weeks), ds (now 20mo), mc (6/7 weeks), mc (blighted ovum). The last two mcs were in consecutive cycles. FWIW, I have been told that the fact of my successful pg means that the odds that I will have another successful pg are good, and also my doctor does not think that the last two mcs were related in terms of there being an underlying problem. Two consecutive mcs are much more likely to be down to chance than three.
Hope your appointment next week brings some positive news.

thanks for your message foundintranslation. What's a blighted ovum? My AF last week was very strange - thought I would have AF 4 weeks after D&C, nothing, then bought a HPT (unused) on Monday, AF came (or so I thought Monday night). Loss of blood and what looked like tissue (sorry TMI but not clot-like). Then nothing. Was going to do test but then AF turned up again Wed evening, not very heavy, and has now gone. I'm confused. Normally I'm regular 28 days, lasting 4 days.

A blighted ovum (horrid phrase, isn't it? - aka anembryonic mc) is when the sac grows, hcG rises etc. etc., but there is or appears to be no foetus. Most believe that in these cases the embryo stopped growing at a very very very early stage.
Your period is unlikely to arrive 4 weeks after D&C, as if it were a 'normal' cycle. The hcG has to fall back to non-pg or near non-pg levels before the cycle really gets into gear. Mine, after my last D&C, took approx 5 and a bit weeks, and was heavier than usual, and I had PMT beforehand for the first (and thus far only, thank goodness) time in my life.

Oh, I've just seen you bled twice. Did you ever have a follow-up scan/blood tests to check your womb was clear and hcG back to normal? If not, it might be a good idea. (It probably is OK but worth checking).

no tests after leaving hospital. I can't remember what AF was like after my first D&C. I do remember after spontaneous m/c it came 3 weeks later. I'm assuming my levels (hopefully) are normal. Good luck to you if you are TTC again.

Hi tranners, just read this thread and if you lost what seemed like tissue it is worth seeing your doctor or the specialist to get a scan. If you do a preg test and there is still tissue inside it will show as a v. faint positive. Sorry, don't want to worry you, but worth trying to get it sorted sooner rather than later. Good luck - I'm sure that because you have a ds then you have a better chance of having another than if you didn't.

worzella · 21/01/2007 00:39

I had a m/c in 2000, ds in 2001, then 2 m/cs 2003. Had tests, really supportive hospital and found I had a blood clotting problem and an over-active thyroid. Both treatable and had DS2 in 2004 and DD in 2006. So having gone through no end of despair we ended up with 3 under 5!! And I had DD at 38 - so there is hope!!'

Apparently, they find reasons for recurrent M/C in 50% of case... so many are still unexplained.

tranners · 21/01/2007 08:56

thanks for your messages. heresfor2007, the tissue loss was less than 1cm, and nothing since. I will mention it when I go to the hospital this week. Worzella, that's very positive thanks, same as me, let's hope I'm as successful as you.

hello tranners.

So sorry about your m/cx3 ......I too have had 3 miscarriages! all in 1 year! Had all the tests which all came back normal. They tested our fetus as i had a d and c in august at 9 weeks pregnant (pregnancy sac growing fetus died at 7 weeks) and it cane back as a chromosonal problem (70-90% of miscarriages are said to be due to this).....The thing is I am 43!!!! and I just feel my time has run out
