advice on post transplant pregnancy

Hi I'm Dani
I'm new to this but wondered if anyone has had a healthy pregnancy post liver or kidney transplant, I've had both liver and kidney transplant, me and my partner want to try for a baby, I'm 3 years post kidney and 4 years post liver. Any advice would be great

Hi dani sorry you haven't had any other replies. No personal experience but I know there are a lot of kidney recipients who successfully carry to term or near. Not sure about the liver success rates, I suspect that would be a bit more complicating. Have you talked to your medical team? They need to be your first port of call.

And whatever you do don't stop taking your immunosuppression!

Thank you for replying, I would never stop my meds with out the doctors say so, I have an appointment next week to discus it all, I know it would be considered a high risk pregnancy. Thank you again for replying it was really nice of you x

My sister was a transplant patient. When I went to visit her (on 2 January, 2000) the doctors and nurses on the ward were floating around beaming at everyone because they'd had twins! One of their patients (who'd had a pretty tricky transplant with complications) had managed to give birth to twins on 1-1-2000. Which sounds like a Holby City story.

My sister also met several other people on her ward who went on to have children after transplants, and others at the Transplant Games.

Hi Dani, I work in the field of transplants and my advice would be to discuss at your next clinic appointment. Some immunosuppressants are not compatible with conception as they carry a high risk of miscarriage/birth defects but if you are stable from the transplant perspective, you can be switched to one which is more suitable when having children.

Whilst your pregnancy will be considered high risk and you will be monitored closely by a consultant throughout, many transplant recipients go on to have families without complications. The medics need to keep a close eye on your transplanted organs throughout to ensure they are coping with the pressures from pregnancy and act quickly if there is any risk to them.

I had a little boy, 3 years post kidney transplant. Everything was fine. I had spoken to my consultant about it, and had changed medication. I had regular appointments, and was induced at 33 weeks as I then developed pre eclampsia. My little boy was in the NICU for less than 16 hours and we went home 3 days later. He was tiny but perfect.

I was super lucky and had an amazing medical team.
