I just took this test - have just had my period but it was freakishly light and only lasted about 18 hours. Unfortunately it was just a spare from my friend which was knocking about in the cupboard. It's a Boots HCG dip test.

So I don't have the instructions.

That line by the front - that's not anything is it? This is negative?

Negative. If there were a second line it would be closer (half a cm ish) near to the control line (which is the one near the solid blue handle)
