Asked to get STD check by doctor?

Hi all.
I've just been to the doc for the first time about my fertility after me and my husband have been TTC for 14 months to find out what's going on. Almost straight away he told us to go the the sexual health clinic to get STD tested before continuing with other tests. Is this normal ? When I look surprised he said didn't want to cast aspersions but in all my trawling through the TTC section of MN I don't think I've heard anyone else mention it. My doctor's is in quite a rough area where I guess STDs could be more common but.... anyway has anyone else had to do this?

I don't think it's weird- STIs can cause fertility issues. Before a GP refers you to a fertility specialist they have the job of ruling out anything they might be able to diagnose through simple tests.

Personally, despite being married, I got a full sexual health check up just before I started TTC.

I'm sure they checked again at the assisted conception unit.

Not weird at all! Bog standard. They should check you regularly anyway! And once you get pregnant they check you for all the blood Bourne ones.

My GP said I had to have chlamydia test as past of pre-referral testing along with d3/21 bloods, SA for DH and a smear if not had one for 3 years (we were inside that window!)

*part not past!!

I've booked to get my tests done and he sent me for blood tests to get my hormone levels checked as well. Im due a smear thanks for the reminder I better get that done too before our next appointment.

I feel like I'm at the beginning of a long line of tests were I will be pulled and poked and if I get pregnant it will probably start all over again.
