short luteal phase, 3 miscarriages, but also 43yrs old!

You will probably remember me I keep dipping in and out of mums net from time to time.

I have had 3 miscarriages in the last year and we have just seen our consultant to finally agree to IVF. He has refused because he said my miscarriages are prob due to my age as all our tests are normal.

He told me my only hope is to find someone who will donate an egg!

Because we were upset I forgot to ask him about my luteal phase!!!! I have spoke about this in the past but he 'poo pooed' it saying that it was me who was using the monitor and getting my ov wrong!!!!

Girls....I know my own body and I am now temping (been doing so for 1 year!).... and this month my luteal phase was 6!!!!!!

Any advise???????????????

Hi Jeddah, poor you! yes Luteal phase sounds very short T Weschler says that anything less than 10 is poor. I'm 44 and got my first IVF appointment on Wed. Did IUI when I was 42 with no success but I wasnt charting then and was unaware that my luteal phase was 10 days. After reading T Weschler's book (cheap off ebay) she recommends vitamins in particular B6. Ive been taking these for around 4 months and luteal phase now 13 - not sure if a co-incident or not but it seems to help (see other threads on here too)

Sounds like you need a second opinion - there is much talk around at the moment about infertility and the luteal phase. Some of it is pioneering and others say irresponsible - but apparently asprin also helps in the implantation phase if there are issues post ovulation. Would recommend you get Toni's book and then arm yourself with relevant Qs for your next consultant appointment all the best!

I'd get a second opinion, too.

You'll need someone to possibly determine the cause of your miscarriages.

It is possible that your eggs are not good quality or you have a poor reserve.

Some clinics do suggest using donor eggs in such an event.

But your luteal phase needs to be evaluated, too.

Don't mean to sound cruel, but your age is definitely a factor in which treatment you receive.

Some clinics advise women over a certain age to use donor eggs.

Have a search on the conception boards. There are some other older mums experiencing assisted reproduction at this time.

Jeddah, I really feel for you, your consultant does not sound very sympathetic to your plight. I have been taking B6 for the last few cycles to try and lengthen my LP. It does seem to be working as my LPs have been longer recently, that said, mine were around 10 days and now are around 12 days so perhaps the B6 might not be enough to increase yours by too long but it might help. I hope you get lucky soon. Re dosage, I am taking 2oo mg/day.

gosh yes my advice is get a new consultant. Is this NHS or are you paying? And are they going to investigate any possible reason for the miscarriages?

my sister is in a similar position to you except she has had IVF. I know the whole thing would have been a hell of a lot worse without having sympathetic medics helping them out. It hasn't worked, but at least she's not being made to feel like she doesn't know anything about her own body...

Im currently on 100mg a day but also take multivitamin supplement. Hope this helps...

Girls we have been fully investigated! every test you can think of.....everything is normal!.... so the only thng they are pinning it down to is the age of my eggs(they would not entertain short luteal phase)...as my cd21 progeterone was normal.... BUT I OVULATE ON DAY 18-19!!!!!!!!

I did take high doses of Vit b6 but the problem is.....do I continue if I become pregnant??????? continued all the other times on the same dose and miscarried 3 times..... do I stop taking when I become pregnant or do I continue?????

Unexplained infertility must be the worst. Have you tried a change in diet? acupuncture? reflexology? I've read a couple of books about that kind of thing making a difference. I am sorry, I don't know anything about egg quality though.

I stop all the supplements I take (B6, Omega 3-6-9, EPO and Royal Jelly) on the day of OV and only take my pre-natal vits for the rest of the cycle. Figure it's not worth the risk if I do conceive. My view is yes, don't take it after OV and therefore not if you are pg either. HTH.

the angus catis - I tok (don't knwo if u remember J) to balance my hormones, I honestly don't knwo the effect it would have on lenghtening your cycles. (althou actually I beleive it helps to OV early iirc??) so possibly.

haev you talked about taking teh baby asprin is it once you're PG. there's a lady on here - or used to be Hellkat I think it was who had 5 M/C's or soemthing and had to have that. some ladies have to have injections as well, there was a lady I remember a few weeks ago that has to have daily injections. can't remember what it's called. (sorry not much use today)

i'd definatly see a consultant again thou, and get a second opinion. can T offer any more advice at all?

also AC - you can only take up to OV date.

Munz.....tried the asprin last time and miscarried at 10 weeks... my tests for clotting ate normal so I was told not to try thins again!

mrsmcjnr.... we take all suppliments and I do accupuncture (dh takes high dose vit c and Zinc and b6 and folic acid and selinuim)

girls I could write a thesis!!!!!!!

decided now from you all.....to pay for a second opinion!

AC I was on 200mg I think (the one from holland and barrets I got) 2 tablets twice a day iirc along wiht pregnacare I assume you're still taking that? also iirc it has to be taken on a full tummy - or that might have been the pregnacare? also it's from the first day or AF to OV (least that's when I took it to/from) althou my DR wouldn't commit to it helping me out when I quizzed him about it was v v on the fence.

just had a look on Holland and Barret and they are 400mg tablets.... it says on the label to take 2 tablets twice a day ... that is 800mg twice a day..... does that sound right????

munz...did you take it up to when you got pregnant????

tbh I didn't I took it for a few cycles then got tested and was fine. I did as said on the bottle.

we used the persona moniter in the end and managed to fall with just that. are you temping as well?

Oh jedds, what a nightmare for you. You've really been to hell and back with this and it's so unfair. I wish I had some good advice to add but I do agree with others that a second opinion sounds like a good idea. Not least to investigate the cause of your miscarriages - if it isn't because of your age, you need to know that before you go to the hassle and expense of donor eggs, I would think.

I agree about the supplements on a full stomach, threw up one morning on the train because I took them on an empty stomach and it got such a shock

I had a short luteal phase .. ovulated day 23 of my cycle .. luteal phase was 8 days .. my consultant recognised it .. and gave me clomid to kick-start my system .. she also said some consultants use progesterone treatment but she believed that treated the symptoms not the cause

Personally I'd change consultants .. if possible

I had tried Vit B but didn't have patience to wait the 6 months + it takes to kick in
