Ovulation on cd 17 of 25 day cycle

Since having DS my cycles seem to be shorter than they were previously. I used to average 28 days but the last year or so has been between 22 and 27 days, with an average of 25.

Also since having him I have been getting quite painful ovulation so I'm pretty sure when I ovulate.

Anyway, we are starting to think about ttc no 2 and are not using any contraception at present.

I'm pretty sure I ovulated on cd 17 this month and I have read that if there isn't at least 10 days between ov and end of cycle then conception can be difficult. Does anyone have any experience of this, and if so what can be done to help?

Also, is it normal for cycles to change like this after having a DC?

Your cycle will always (and I mean ALWAYS) start and AF will appear exactly 14 days after ovulation as long as you have ovulated.

I get really painful ovulation too (it's woken me up in the past) but if you want to be 100% sure of your ovulation date I would use a test.

Some women do not have a 14 day luteal (ie post ovulatory) phase. Some experts think this can be a problem - eg if your luteal phase is less than 10 days there might not be time for an embryo to implant.

If you ovulated on day 17 and you do have a 14 day luteal phase, that would push your period later. But if your luteal phase is very short you may still have a 25 day cycle this time. You might want to speak to a doctor if this is the case - although some women swear by acupuncture and / or B vitamins for this sort of thing.

Your luteal phase usually won't vary by more than a day or two from cycle to cycle, so keep an eye on it for a few months. I'd suggest charting your basal body temperature as this will show when you ovulated (opks indicate an LH surge is happening but this will not always be followed by ovulation).

If you ovulate late (and have a normal length luteal phase) that's ok. Ovulation can be delayed by stress, illness, travel. But it doesn't mean you can't get pregnant that cycle.

I think I usually ovulate earlier than day 17 but my cycle has averaged 25 days for about a year now.
I'll just have to see when af starts this month. It should be due on Monday but late ov could = late af. (Unless pg of course!)

The luteal phase ( time between ovulation and period starting) varies from woman to woman. The average being around 14 days.

OP you are correct that 10 days or more is optimal for conception.

When I started tracking my cycles TTC for my second my LP was between 7-9 days and I ended up seeing a private fertility doctor (NHS didn't take me seriously and gave me the brush off). Private consultant prescribed me progesterone pessaries as its a drop in progesterone levels that brings on your period and if it happens too soon I.e before a fertilised egg can implant then you are going to have trouble conceiving.

What makes you think you are ovulating on day 17?

I used to think I was ovulating on day 25 of a 35 day cycle as I was only going by ewcm. I started temping and using opks and turns out I ovulate on day 21 and still have a few days of ewcm after.

The pain. Mainly. Bad cramps and backache.

I'd really recommend giving temping a go, at least for a month. It's the only way to see definitively if/when you are ovulating.

My ovaries are laughing at you right now. This is totally incorrect.

I agree with a previous poster re temping/tracking (I use FertilityFriend) and monitoring your luteal phase. Those cheap ovulation sticks get mixed reviews but I have always found them to be accurate - might be worth trying those to check you're actually ovulating when you think you are rather than relying on the cramps/backache signs.
