Is anyone trying to lose weight before getting pregnant?

I'm 31, desperate to ttc number 2 but am overweight (bmi 30.1 at the moment). I have lost 26lbs so far but would ideally lose another 2 - 2.5st before we ttc another.

I'm so broody and cross at myself that I have put myself in this position. I have set myself a goal of start of June, but that is 3 months away and not sure I could lose that much weight in that time. But hopefully I will be a lot closer to a healthy weight by then and will continue to diet until I get a bfp.

I don't want to wait much longer as who knows how long it will take (I had 2mcs before my ds).

Is anyone else in a similar position? It would be nice to talk to someone in the same boat Smile

I have weighed at home today, seeing as I missed SW, and I have lost the 2lbs I had gained. My weakness is sweet stuff, particularly chocolate, so I am trying to cut down on my sugar intake. I've cut down my sugar in tea and have ditched cereal or Nutella in porridge (Blush) for breakfast- had an omelette today. Had lentil dahl for lunch which I pack full of veg. Just need to stick to a sensible tea!

ppandj · 07/03/2016 14:22

PS if anyone has done a similar weaning off sugar, can you share any tips?

KP86 · 07/03/2016 15:01

ppandj, I was addicted to sugar, big time! The low carb, high fat diet that I've been following has made me very rarely miss it, which I was so surprised by.

I can (and do) still have sugar free sweet treats like diet jelly, soft drinks and squash. I also have 80% chocolate which doesn't have too much sugar in it. I usually have 20-30g of that each day, if I have leftover cal.

ppandj · 07/03/2016 15:20

Yes KP i think I saw a program about high fat being good to curb sugar cravings?---- I've got to cut down for DS's sake, too. I'd feel such a hypocrite stuffing my face with chocolate and trying to tell him not to!

KP86 · 07/03/2016 17:43

It's quite amazing. And on Saturday when I didn't have much fat in the morning or during the day I was craving carbs and sugar a lot!

Then Sunday had bacon and eggs for breakfast and I was good until dinner. No cravings either.

oldlaundbooth · 08/03/2016 00:35

Just realised my post is littered with typos Blush

Went to BIL at the weekend, had some wine, ate croissants for breakfast, but managed to get outside for walks as weather was lovely.

Today hasn't been too bad : cottage cheese and apple sauce for breakfast, melba toast and peanut butter, an apple, an avocado for mid morning snack, ham and cheese sandwich, small soup, small salad for lunch, roast chicken and roast veg for supper.

It's hard to eat healthy in winter, I crave stodge!

oldlaundbooth · 08/03/2016 00:40

Quitting sugar is hard but worth it.

Lower carb, more protein, more fat definitely reduces cravings. I try and stay away from sugar : as I said in a PP I baked a batch of cookies for my birthday, I ate four at once! If I have even a bit of sugar, I'm like someone possessed, I can't stop!

Cold Turkey is the way forward. Fruit and veg starts to taste sweet once you wean yourself off it : and almonds too!

KP86 · 11/03/2016 07:52

How's everyone going this week? I've been sticking to my eating plan (1 month yesterday!) but no loss this week. Trying not to feel too disheartened because I've still lost around 7kg in a month which is pretty good!

Really, really need to work on my activities. I usually try to make one day a week an outing that will involve a lot of walking but that hasn't happened the last couple of weeks, mainly due to weather.

I found a local gym that's £23/month without a contract so I need to bite the bullet and go sign myself up. DH is perfectly capable and happy to take on the DS duties straight after work so I could go around 6pm a few nights per week.

notasillysausage · 12/03/2016 10:32

That's great that you can get to the gym KP. Go for it! You are doing really well, don't be disheartened by no loss this week, usually that means a big loss round the corner.

I've had a good week or so, very busy with work but stuck to my diet. I have lost 7lbs so lost the weight I put on during my week off plus an extra pound Smile

Only half a pound to go and I officially have a bmi in the overweight category rather than obese which has been a mental stumbling block for me so can't wait to get there!

Time is absolutely flying by, I've lost motivation at work and think it's because I am counting down the days until I can ttc but not long until June now! Hopefully I can be 11 stone something by then.

Hi, just checking in. My weigh day is Saturday's and I lost 3lb so 17lb in 4 weeks. I'm pretty happy it's coming off quickly but well prepared for the 1lb/maintain weeks so will try not to get disheartened when it slows down (easier said than done I know).
Last week I went to yoga, buggy fit, kettlebells & bootcamp so I have the same planned for this week too. I'm currently 13st 3lb so hoping I can get back in the 12s in a couple of weeks.

sausage I have 5lb to go until I'm not obese! Woo hoo! You're right even though I'll still be classed as overweight to have a BMI under 30 again will be a goal reached. Also, DH is currently 13st (he is 6ft though) so once I weigh less than him I'll be happier too.

KP I'm due to move at the end of the month & I'll be with you joining the local leisure centre. I need to get on the treadmill too. Likewise DH is happy to look after DS while I go so luckily I should manage 4/5 classes per week. My aim is 3 classes so anymore will help me, I'm starting to feel fitter already at kettle bells which is giving me a boost & I took photos so I can see a difference in my figure.

Healthy thoughts for everyone this week Star

ppandj · 17/03/2016 14:57

Hi all,

Well done on all your efforts and successes. You're all motivating me into gear.

This is the first week I have been consistently on track every day. I have ditched slimming world in favour of saving money (despite having some success at the start I just don't think it's for me). KP86 I have discovered MFP- can't believe I had never used it before, it's great. Mondays are my weigh day now as I find it keeps me on track over the weekend as a pp I think said?

Good luck for the rest of the week and weekend Smile we can do it!

CestLaVie93 · 19/03/2016 10:07

pp I ditched slimming world too due to the costs & also getting there every week. I find it such a faff. So much easier doing it in your own home plus you can weigh naked (I think it would be frowned upon if you did this in group Grin). Glad to hear you're sticking to it - well done!

I've lost another 3lb this week so 20lb in 5 weeks. I'm pretty amazed I've stuck to it for this long to be honest but the thought of another baby is really giving me the kick up the arse I need. I'm now 13st & only 2lb away from being classed as overweight not obese. Small goals!

I was 12st when I first got pregnant so if I lose another ill be back to my pre-pregnancy weight however I want to be between 10-11 stone for ttc this time. I 'plan' to eat well during pregnancy this time but I know how hard it can be! I had Greggs bacon butties for breakfast for about 6 months in work Grin. Good times. The HV commented once "ooh he has lovely skin, you must have ate really well in pregnancy" erm no, Blush, I definitely did not!

Let us know how you're getting on, let's keep this thread going 💪

wispaxmas · 19/03/2016 13:51

Hiya, don't have time to read the whole thread now, but I'm also 31 and planning to TTC in a few months and have a BMI of 30.2 currently!!

wispaxmas · 19/03/2016 17:43

Right, I've had a chance to read through a bit, but I must admit I've skimmed. I'm another using MFP and a Fitbit, though.

A bit more about me: we will be TTC from May, and I've been trying to lose weight since beginning of Feb. Lost 3.5kg despite keeping to on average 1400-1500 calories and logging 15-20k steps per day on my Fitbit!! I'm going to get my thyroid checked, though, because I'm worried about some other symptoms as well.

I would like to lose as much weight as possible, but will be alright with losing just another 5kg to get back to what I weighed before having my DD. I'll still be overweight, but my normal adult weight. At the rate I'm going I won't make it, though Sad

ppandj · 21/03/2016 19:44

Hello all

How are you all getting on? I've had a good week, since I started using MFP last Monday I have lost 2.8lbs. I bought myself some new clothes (first since having my DS!) and have dropped a dress size so am now one size away from some of my pre-pregnancy clothes. Hoping you're all having some similar success, too?

ppandj · 21/03/2016 19:56

PS welcome Wispaxmas Smile

Pugmummy87 · 21/03/2016 21:35

Hi all, room for another one?

A bit about me, I'm 29, ttc #1, diagnosed with pcos about 5 years ago. Not been on any form of contraception for 5 years but started actively ttc in November.
Basically in Jan 2013 I was at my heaviest with a bmi of 39.7 (and I'm only 4ft 11), managed to lose 4 stone of that. Unfortunately my dad passed away in December and ive gone and put about 2 stone of it back on. Bmi now 35.
Not had one snifter of a bfp and I know my weight will not be helping, especially with the pcos. Currently on cd4 of cycle 5.

So I'm back to Slimming world and i've got myself a fitbit , aiming to get my 10k steps a day and i've started some yoga. Downloaded couch to 5K app too.
Would be nice to have some support from those going through similar.

wispaxmas · 21/03/2016 22:03

Thanks for the welcome, pp, and amazing progress! I would love to drop a dress size. I'm one size up from pre-pregnancy, too, but even those are size 14 and 16, shop depending. Would love to be a 12/14, but that seems impossible to me!

Hi pugmummy! I love my Fitbit, I'm amazed at how much I'm enjoying trying to earn badges and compete against friends and acquaintances. I end up being in several workweek hustle and weekend warrior challenges every week now. 10,000 steps is easily achievable, you can do it! I went a bit mad today and logged 26k steps, I briefly considered going for a brisk walk around the block to see if I could get up to 30k and earn a new badge, but I'm so knackered. I don't think I have ever been as active as I am now with a Fitbit - even back when I was going to the gym a few days a week and had a personal trainer. They really are amazing little gadgets.

KP86 · 22/03/2016 20:16

Hi everyone, this thread slipped too far down my list and I've just read the updates. All those steps are great!

TTOM is due at the end of this week (might also help to explain my carb cravings/feeling hungry!) but a small part of me is wondering could I be?? If you remember we aren't actively trying now due to due dates but we don't ever use protection so who knows... not that we are DTD every day, but current average is 1-2/week.

I don't remember what my weight loss was for my last post, but it's about 8kg now. Going well, but slowing right now. As I said before, MUST INCREASE ACTIVITY!

Wishing you all good weight loss and TTC vibes.

Pugmummy87 · 22/03/2016 20:56

Thanks wispaxmas!

Wow, 26k steps?! That's amazing.
I have to admit, to me 10k steps is at present, challenging for me, my job basically involves me driving around in a car all day or sitting at a desk in a gp surgery or sitting on people's sofas (I'm a community midwife), so I have to cram in the steps before and after work. The lighter evenings will help as I can go for a walk with the dogs for longer. Hoping that I'll be able to increase the steps the more active I get.

wispaxmas · 23/03/2016 20:00

pugmummy, I don't work as I'm home with my toddler and only work some weekends and school holidays. I get to be as active as I can be. Today that's 22k steps, but yesterday was only 12k.. I'm trying to do at least 15k each day, but Monday kinda killed me! My labradoodle is loving having two good walks a day, though!

ppandj · 21/06/2016 10:38

Hi all

I just wanted to revive this thread and see how everyone is getting on?

We have booked a holiday for the end of August now, but have 2 weddings to go to at the end of July. I'd like to lose a stone really by the holiday but we are not currently preventing a pregnancy so we'll just see what happens.

notasillysausage · 21/06/2016 20:59

Hi, well we have started ttc this month - eek! I have lost 2.5 stone since last September, I'm still overweight with a bmi of 28 but still going to slimming world to try and lose some more while we try.

I have a weekend away towards the end of August too and am aiming for another stone by then (it's 9weeks away so that's 1.5lb a week), don't know what will happen if I get pregnant in between that time. Not sure how slimming world works while you are pregnant, whether you carry on losing or just aim to maintain.

I'm due on my period on Saturday, convinced I have all the pg symptoms under the sun but in reality I'm probably not!

OP posts:
ppandj · 22/06/2016 14:15

Sausage that's exciting! I'll keep fx for you. Are you going to do a test early or just wait and see if af shows up?
Well done on the brilliant weight loss!
My BMI is 28 too, if I could get a bit more off I really would feel better.

I think you can follow slimming world while pregnant as long as you have some more healthy extras? I used SW for 6 months after having DS last year and while bfing I think I had 3 healthy extras if my memory serves me.

I'm really struggling with clothes at the moment as not much of my old stuff fits nicely but I'm not that far off some of it so I don't want to buy new stuff. Extra motivation to shift the lbs.

notasillysausage · 22/06/2016 21:16

ppandj I'm exactly the same with clothes. I'm just going to continue walking round in my baggy old clothes (well, the ones that don't fall down) until I fit into my smaller ones.

I have taken a test (or 3!), they were negative. I don't know how early they would show up though, I think I'm 11dpo today.
