Is anyone trying to lose weight before getting pregnant?

I'm 31, desperate to ttc number 2 but am overweight (bmi 30.1 at the moment). I have lost 26lbs so far but would ideally lose another 2 - 2.5st before we ttc another.

I'm so broody and cross at myself that I have put myself in this position. I have set myself a goal of start of June, but that is 3 months away and not sure I could lose that much weight in that time. But hopefully I will be a lot closer to a healthy weight by then and will continue to diet until I get a bfp.

I don't want to wait much longer as who knows how long it will take (I had 2mcs before my ds).

Is anyone else in a similar position? It would be nice to talk to someone in the same boat Smile

KP86 great minds! I'm going to up my exercise this week and do some gym classes. Might take DS swimming too.

KP86 · 29/02/2016 12:40

Swimming is a great idea. Shame our local pool charges so much to go! It's £5.50/swimming adult (DS is still free) which I think is outrageous considering there's not even a lap pool. It's at a leisure centre and it's a wave pool with two water slides. Not so handy for exercise...

nataliefruit · 29/02/2016 21:03

Hey everyone, how y'all doing today? Had my fitbit on the last couple of days & over 10000 steps yesterday and today. I get quite a lot of exercise walking my dogs at least once a day (if hubby gets home before me in the evenings he takes them out) but I take them every morning so got get an ok level of exercise.

Is it just me or did others find they had a massive appetite after coming off the pill? This is my 3rd week off it & all I've been doing for those 3 weeks is stuff my face!!! I've been better today but really need to up my fruit & veg as only had 3 maybe 4 of my 5 a day today. Small positives tho & have been better than other days.

CestLaVie93 · 01/03/2016 12:01

Lou I've thought about doing 5/2. My mates slightly changed it and is doing 4/3 (so 4 days normal 3 days restricting) I don't know if it's necessarily healthy (?) but she's losing weight quite quickly. I can't bare the thought of getting pregnant at this weight either, I would be the size of a house 😂.

natalie I find I'm hungrier off the pill when it comes to my period anyway. I get period pains like I'm being kicked in the crotch (which I never got on the pill) so I eat more because I feel sorry for myself!

I've been doing ok so far this week, I've lost another 1lb so 12lb gone in total. I put on weight after the baby was born so I need to lose another 5lb then I'm back to post-pregnancy. Then I need to get back to pre-pregnancy Grin
I find it really helpful that I have notes on my phone to tell me how much I'll be in August if I lose 1lb per week and also added one for 2lb per week. I need to lose another 10lb until I'm classed as overweight not obese so the small goals are keeping me going.

Has anybody tried the special k porridge for breakfast? It's got half the calories of oats so simple & is really filling. I add dries fruit like sultanas & apricots to the bowl & I can't even finish it in full! It's probably about 200 cals in total with the fruit so might help somebody who's struggling with breakfasts.

nataliefruit · 01/03/2016 12:17

I tell you what not to have for breakfast - bagels. I nearly fell through the floor when I looked at the calories this morning!! Shock

LouTheMac · 01/03/2016 13:26

Hey all

Well I dusted off the fit bit (bought Jan 15!) so that's some progress..aiming for my 10k steps. I only really do about half that when not trying so I will be going out walking to make up the steps. Find it hard with the dark evenings as I live in a village with hardly any pavements or street lights, so much easier in summer!

Cestlavie well done on the weight loss! You are doing well.
** i think 5:2 has loads of health benefits beyond losing weight, i read the book about it and it's supposed to help reduce risk of diabetes, cancer & dementia. It's to do with it forcing your body from growth mode into repair mode. Our ancestors would have naturally fasted when food was scarce. Not sure if 4:3 is maybe a bit excessive though! I had awful headaches when i did it so couldn't continue. But if seems like the simplest solution as no messing around with specific foods!

GlitteryFluff · 01/03/2016 17:10

Hi! I hope I can join here. Need some motivational support!
DS is 18months and we want to start ttc around/just after his 2nd birthday in August.
I'm about 14.5 stone 14st9lb. Would like to be nearer 10st. Need to lose as much as possible, I know I'm not going to lose it all by then, but anything helps!
I was overweight before I had DS, and when I went into hospital I was up to 18st (4 stone more than pre-pregnancy) as he was a whopper (11lb7oz!) and I ate everything in sight. Not this time. It's not going to happen!
So yesterday I started eating better. Drinking more water. Trying to eat breakfast.
I need to try to get it in my brain that eating healthy is going to equal another child (hopefully). I just keep eating!

CestLaVie93 · 01/03/2016 17:24

Lou I have a Fitbit too but I can't wear it as I bought size small & it hurts my wrists 😂 Maybe when I lose another stone... (I do have little hands & wrists but obviously not that little anymore!). I find it sooo hard to do 10000 steps though too, I use the health app on my iPhone & I've never done more than 9000! Must do more walking now it's getting lighter outside. That's really interesting about 5/2 I didn't realise. Might give it a bash in a couple of weeks when my calorie counting slows down which it inevitably will.

Hi glittery I plan to ttc in August too and am currently 13st 8lb (was 14st 6lb last month). Sounds like we have the same goals, I want to lose at least 2 stone but ideally more. I'd love to be 10 stone again!! Well done on the weight loss so far, wow 11lb 7oz that's a good weight, I thought DS was big at 8oz 10lb 😂. We can do it, let's be back on this thread in August & be 2 stone lighter!

oldlaundbooth · 02/03/2016 16:26

Hello everyone,

Wondered if I might join you guys?

On a couple of other weightloss threads but we are TTC#2 to thought I'd say hi!

I don't have that much to lose (well, it feels a lot) around 10lbs /a stone. It's such a cliché but it really has just crept on. Lost a lot of weight pre and post DS and really do not want to have to lose lots!

I plan on lower carbing and when I can, exercise and also sticking (or trying to) to around 1500 per day.

I used MFP last time, but find I don't really need it now, I'm so aware of the calories in things.

For me the biggest problems are pasta and bread - I just pack it on if I eat those!

I'm 5'5 and weigh 148lbs. Was 138 in September!

oldlaundbooth · 02/03/2016 16:37

nataliefruit apparently bagels have the equivalent of 4 slices of bread! 4!!!

But I do have fond memories of eating a huge bagel in a New York diner, slathered in whipped butter and jam.

OMG it was good! Grin

KP86 · 02/03/2016 17:26

Howdy!

Welcome to the newbies. Doesn't matter whether you have 1/2, 1 or 10 stone to lose, we are here to support each other.

I officially weighed this morning, down another 1.8kg so total lost now is 6.5kg (or pretty much 1 stone) in three weeks. I'm pleased! Four more to go.

I've been really good with my food, it seems as long as I avoid carbs and stick to 1500cal or less then I will lose weight. Still not as active as I'd like, but I'm getting there.

Keep at it, all!

notasillysausage · 02/03/2016 20:15

Hi everyone, well I am officially back on the bandwagon after my week off last week. I put on 6lb Shock but hopefully it will drop off quickly (please be water retention!!)

Three month countdown to ttc, if I can lose 2lbs a week that will be two stone. I would have a bmi of 26.7 if I managed that which I would be happy to start trying at. Good luck everyone!

OP posts:
KP86 · 02/03/2016 21:01

Welcome back :)

I have fingers and toes crossed for you that it's water weight. I have a theory that weight that's gained (or lost!) quickly will very easily go the other way again. Almost like it doesn't get a chance to stick to your body properly.

That's a good goal weight for pre-pregnancy. I have to lose another 15kg before I even reach the 'overweight' part of my BMI chart. With any luck I can do that in three months as well, and then I would be at the same weight as when we conceived DS.

CestLaVie93 · 02/03/2016 21:53

Hey old good luck with the weight loss. I'm the same height as you & When I was around the same weight I found it much more difficult to lose then when I was bigger as I had days when I thought 'well I'm not that big anyway' so couldn't stick to it. My lowest ever was 134 gulp that makes me sick I'm 190 now 😭.

Well done KP that's amazing! Could you do any exercise classes in the week? I find I don't work hard enough at the gym alone but in a class I sweat loads. Must be peer pressure but it works! Just came back from kettlebells & I'd love a bath but DS has decided he doesn't want to sleep tonight... Why???? Babies/children fight sleep so much & then once you become a parent you would kill for it 😂.

Welcome back sausage. I lose 4lbs in one day at the start of my weight loss. It was obviously water retention but I'm still counting it Wink. I really want a BMI of 26 for ttc but it means I need to lose 2lbs a week. Really hope I can stick to it this time & be active during pregnancy too.

Does anybody know, say if I continue to do bootcamp/kettlebells classes 3/4 times a week, can I still do these while pregnant I.e. Early stages or does it increase risk of mc? I didn't do ANYTHING last time before or during (purely down to laziness) & I would really love to still go to classes until I get too pregnant that it's uncomfortable.

KP86 · 03/03/2016 13:23

I was doing group training boot camps until I was 18w last time, and I only stopped because it was the end of term and I was starting to find it difficult.

I used lighter weights (only 2-3kg) and modified some of the activities - spoke to the instructor and he helped me choose things that would suit.

oldlaundbooth · 03/03/2016 16:40

Thanks for the words of welcome, everyone Grin

Cestlavie93 Bonjour!

You sound so similar to me! I too have a DS, he's 2.2. I also have this fear that it will be harder to conceive #2 as our DS was a bit of a surprise, and it took literally no effort to conceive with him! I am trying not to let it take over my life this time, but it's hard not to.

I bought some of the pee sticks off Amazon, they were super cheap so I thought why not.

I've also downloaded Ovia onto my phone, so I can track my cycle. I haven't been temping or anything but it's good to know when you are ovulating etc.

KP86 · 03/03/2016 16:47

I've just made a little experimental side to go with tonight's dinner: it's celeriac and cauliflower puréed/mashed together with single cream and butter, then add a bit of grated cheese (we only had 40g left in the pack) and two eggs. Spread into a lined roasting or slice tray and bake on moderate for about 1.5hr until firm and top is a bit browned.

Remembering I'm looking at high fat/low carb for those looking at all the 'non-diet' ingredients! It has made 8 decent squares at 170cal each, and pretty much 0 net carbs for those playing at home.

Will come back later and let you know if it's any good. We tried puréed cauli last week as an alternative to mashed potato but it was not great. Cauliflower 'rice' is pretty good, and Asda do a 400g pre-done pack for £1, which works out the same as a whole cauli in price.

CestLaVie93 · 03/03/2016 19:13

KP good to know it can still be done. I only use a 5kg (Blush) kettlebell anyway as I'm so unfit I can barely complete the class as it is. I didn't get morning sickness last time or have any pregnancy issues (apart from the odd bit of dreaded heartburn), so no excuse really!
Dinner sounds good. I really, really need to start cooking. I've bought pasta, sauce & some pancetta for tea. That's as far as my culinary skills go & not very healthy but could be pizza & chips! Grin

old bonjour! I'm actually laughing out loud as I read your post thinking 'eh why bonjour' ... Then I realised my username duh! I hope I haven't made myself out to sound exotic, I'm from Manchester Wink.

I'm going to download ovia now as keep meaning to do it & will buy some sticks closer to the time. Have you been ttc long? Are you exercising?

I had a debrief with a midwife regarding the birth of DS & asked about next time. She told me to take folic acid as soon as I ttc as its proven to be really good for the foetus in those early weeks. Worth a try I suppose!

KP86 · 03/03/2016 19:27

Dinner was good! Worth the effort.

And don't let me fool you that I was some kind of exercise queen pre-DS. I wasn't. My 'heavy' weights were probably 6kg so I'm really not much ahead of you!

Conception/pregnancy vitamins won't hurt you normally and are really good for baby so I'll start on them in May, I think. At the moment I'm just taking a multi-V in case I'm not getting all I need through this diet.

oldlaundbooth · 04/03/2016 14:29

cestlavie93 Ah, Manchester. I'm from over t'hill, in Lancashire Grin

We haven't really been trying for that long, had surprise pregnancy in December but unfortunately miscarried a week later. Let's just say it was a crap Christmas and New Year. But since the miscarriage we've decided that now is a good time, so we are actively trying! DS is 2.2 so feel it's the right time.

Haven't been doing any major exercise - I work full time, too tired at night to do much, at weekends we run around after DS and walk etc. Once Spring hits I will be back on my bike. Used to do spinning, I really need to get back into it, it's hard but really fun.

I've been taking multivitamins (since I found I was preg in Dec), trying to lose weight, cut out alcohol and caffeine. I'd rather have a coffee than a glass of wine!

Ovia is useful as I've discovered I have a short menstrual cycle, so I actually ovulate earlier than I thought Grin

notasillysausage · 04/03/2016 19:38

I'm going to start taking my pregnancy vitamins in May too, they are quite expensive to start taking much earlier.

I am terrible with exercise, I don't do enough, but I struggle to fit it in. I do take my ds swimming once a week but it's honestly not that much exercise. I'm going to try by just moving more and see where I go from there.

Lasagne and Garlic bread for tea - all weight watchers friendly. Looking forward to it, I've had a hectic day - lots of driving in the snow!

When is everyone's weigh in day? Mine is Monday, makes me watch what I eat over the weekend.

OP posts:
CestLaVie93 · 04/03/2016 20:15

old I'm sorry to hear about your MC. I can imagine it was a very difficult Christmas indeed. Flowers
I have a gorgeous Victoria Pendleton bike that I haven't been out on in over a year!! Definitely need to start riding again once the weather gets better. I've not been able to go to bootcamp tonight as DP is working but I'll try to go to the morning one. 8.30 is just too early to work out IMO but I'll try Grin.

sausage I got healthy start vitamins for 91p from my doctors last time. These ones:
www.healthystart.nhs.uk/healthy-start-vouchers/healthy-start-vitamins/
(Hope the link works). Cheap compared to the likes of pregnacare. Will start taking them late July I think.

My weigh day is tomorrow (Saturday) so it motivates me not to have Friday night takeaway especially when DP is home & DS is in bed. I weighed myself this morning & have lost 2lbs so imagine will get the same result in the morning. That's 13lbs in total - I'm getting there slowly but surely!! (Only another 40 to go Blush)

Imaginary Cake for all since we can't have it in RL!

ppandj · 06/03/2016 14:25

Hi all
Sorry I thought I had a watch on this thread but hadn't, so had to find it again.

You all sound like you are doing so well! I have been hit and miss this last week, didn't go to slimming world either so I'm not sure of the damage. I wrote today off as I knew we'd be having something calorie-laden. However, I have done a load of batch cooking in preparation for the week ahead.

Well done on all your progress Smile

KP86 · 06/03/2016 21:37

Haven't checked in for a few days but I always read everyone's posts.

Welcome back to those who are on the bandwagon again.

I'm still going well. Had my first bit of takeaway this weekend since this all started around four weeks ago, but it was LCHF diet-friendly Indian curry. No rice, I ate mine with the cauli/celeriac bake from earlier in the week.

Weight seems to have fluctuated a little this week, need to stay off the scales for a few days and do some more walking!

I'm off to the nurse at the GP's tomorrow for a general health check up and I'm going to ask about general and pre-natal bloods just to see how it's all going. I'm sure my vitamin D will be low, it usually is during winter.

Wishing everyone a good and successful weight loss week. It will be worth it.

oldlaundbooth · 07/03/2016 01:14

Thanks, Cestlavie*.
