Have been having 26-day cycles on and off for most of the last year. Was pretty sure I had been ovulating given temps and other signs. Had been assuming ovulation on or about day 16 but have had blood test this month (on day 19) to check. Period arrived today (day 24 of cycle so 23 day cycle as am now on day 1 of new cycle!!). What is going on? Any ideas? Am getting v panicked. Am 37 and have one dd, who is 2.8.

OK, have just read that 23 days is at the low end but still within a 'normal' 23-35 day range. Still, I don't think I've ever had a shorter cycle.

could you have been in the vvv early stages of pg?

newkid · 18/12/2006 17:05

Interesting thought. Do you mean that maybe my last period wasn't really a period and that maybe this is a mc at 7-8ish weeks OR that I conceived this month... Either month we had a v good chance of conceiving to be honest. Also bled (quite heavily when pg with DD) at 8 weeks but thankfully all worked out ok then. Feels like a normal period though tbh.

it could be that you conceived this month. how do you feel? is it normal for you?

Hmm 'period' seems to have stopped after a day, though don't feel entirely free of period-like general ugh feeling so not getting my hopes up too much!

Hi,
Im sure by now you are fine, as there are no "new " messages. However just thought I would tell you that shorter periods are perfectly normal. As you get older, and or have had kids the very nature of your periods can change. Mine were the standard 28 days but since kids they have been much shorter. the shortest ever was 14 days and the Dr said nothing to worry about! just not too fun! I have a normal 21 days now....but even 17 is within the normal range! Please do not worry.

I am 38 and desperately want to concieve. Sometimes my cycles are 23-24 and the last two months they have been 26 days, it's strange. I have been to the doctor and he told me to temp chart, he looked at charts and said everything was fine, along with bloodwork. You need to count the day you ov to the day you start. My cycles were rather short when I first came off the pill 8 months ago. If I count my months, it actually turns out that I ov 11 days after I start spotting, not even start flowing cause I always spot a few days before I start, weird. I wouldn't worry too much unless there is less than 10 between O and start of period.

Your doc told you to temp chart?. Tsk. He should realise that such things are unreliable at best and plain wrong at worst. You can actually get a rise in temp in the second half of a cycle when an egg has not been shed. Bloods would give a more reliable indicator as long as he compared your LH against that of your FSH levels (if these were both tested). If that was not done then the test is meaningless.

Any spotting between periods ought to be investigated to ascertain the cause. Ifs often not at all serious but it ought to be investigated further.

The general consensus is if that if you're over 35 and have been ttc for six months plus without success then a referral to a gynae is in order.
