Clomid - has anyone used it?

I went to fertility specialist yesterday and got given it but mainly because I asked for it (I'm 42). I'm not sure whether to give it a go or not and not sure about the injection side of things - i.e. injection to release the egg. I don't want to mess up future cycles.

I've had clomid but no injections involved?
Clomid stimulates the ovaries and therefore (should) allow ovulation.
Clomid should also be monitored very closely with ultrasound scans and blood tests.
I've had 6 cycles and have been lucky enough to get a BFP but it's been a long hard journey

thanks. I've been put straight onto 100mg, probably because of my age, but am worried it might be too high.

Are they monitoring you? Each cycle I had a scan to make sure I wasn't making too may eggs

wotsitsmaltesers · 17/10/2015 12:19

yeah i think i can go in and have a scan. What happens if you do make too many eggs. can you not try that month?

OP posts:
mistletoeprickles · 17/10/2015 13:00

That becomes your decision. One month I had three mature follicles and we decided to try anyway.
The month I got pregnant on I wasn't scanned as the nurse was on holiday

wotsitsmaltesers · 17/10/2015 15:27

Thanks mistletoe prickles what day of cycle did you start my doctor said to start day 2 which is today but have read you can start day 3 and thinking i'd like another day to think.

I am on my third cycle of iui with clomid, I have also been taking a trigger shot to ovulate if I don't have Lh surge by day 13.

I would ask about if you will have a scan if you don't surge naturally, if you end up doing the trigger shot then you will need a scan to time the trigger correctly as eggs won't release if they are triggered when they are too small.

I take the clomid at night so as to minimize the experience of the side effects. I'd rather have night sweats than hot flushes at work.

wotsitsmaltesers · 17/10/2015 15:56

Thanks illiria. I didn't know too much about side effects so just been reading about them. Are they very bad? I just don't know what to do. What day of cycle do you take it on?

OP posts:
Illiria · 17/10/2015 20:57

I take 100 mg days 3-7, from what I have read you take it earlier in cycle to get more eggs and later in the cycle to have one or two eggs.

The only side effects I have had are hot flashes and one possible cyst, but it could just have been a large follicle. My side effects haven't been too bad but they change intensity each cycle so I can't predict what this month will be like.

wotsitsmaltesers · 18/10/2015 12:14

Thanks Illiria. I think I'm going to wait for next cycle when life is a bit calmer and I can do scanning properly. Wishing you lots and lots of luck. It's all so worrying isn't it.

Sorry to gatecrash but you lot aeem in the know!

Anyone had clomid privately? What were the costs like? The consultant says he recommends a low dose next cycle but I'm worried about the costs of the ultrasounds etc! Thanks all and best of luck x

birchygoo · 19/10/2015 16:09

I am on my 3rd cycle of clomid - I only had one scan on my first cycle which detected one follicle - so they told me that was the correct dose and sent me on my way!

I have a follow up again after my 3rd cycle but i think that will be for a lap&dye

symptoms - I have had hot flushes which are not pleasant :-( but only 1 clomid temper tantrum hahah

wotsitsmaltesers · 19/10/2015 20:46

Hi mascaraisamust - I got my climid privately - the consultation was £250 and then prescription only about £11 - follicle tracking etc. about another £600 - not sure I can afford that - so it is expensive - I reckon if you went to GP they'd give it to you. Thanks birchygoo - I've chickened out of it this cycle as am worried about the side effects and have to do a lot of public speaking in next couple of weeks. May give next cycle a go - just seems so odd that the doctor just threw it at me because I asked. Probably thinks there is no hope because of my age. Fingers crossed for you for this cycle.

When they gave it to me they said it was a chaep non invasive prettybsafe treatment method so thats probably why they gave it tonyou nomquestions asked. I think it only costs NHS about 7 quid for 6 month treatment.

Hot flushes at Max for me were 5 a day. But that was probably only for about 2 days a month and maybe a week of a few hot flashes. It didn't affect my EWCM as others have experienced either
