Doctors appointment tomorrow...bricking it.

Have posted before but under a different name (new account as couldn't remember login to old one!)

So we have been ttc our first child for well over a year, around 16 months. During that period we conceived once and went on to miscarry at 6+5 weeks, Im seeing my gp tomorrow to try and see if they are willing to do some tests to see if there's a problem.

My question is, what should I expect? Are they likely to take me seriously? I'm only 24 and feel like I'm going to be fobbed off with 'try another six months then come back'. Is it worth taking some details of my most recent cycles? As they seem to be shortening and the spotting is now starting at around 8dpo.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Definately have stats to hand and be ready to say what you want to happen e.g. Blood tests to check ovulation and hormone levels.

I wrote down everything I wanted to get across and all my concerns. I got as far as day 21 bloods being done and a referal to a gynae and I got a bfp but mc early too. Now the gp won't refer me to a fertility specialist and told me to see how we go, but that's at 10 months. At 16 months they are probably more likely to do tests but will probably see that you got a bfp and suggest you may need more time.

I went private as the gp told me to wait on another 6 months and come back whxch would make me where you are now. Fingers crossed you get some answers, as I say just have the facts to hand and let them know if you've been using opks, temping etc. x

Try not to let them fob you off, I went after ttc for 13 months and no bfp, she arranged day 3 and 21 bloods then said keep trying for another six months and then she would refer us to fertility clinic. Month later I went back and dh came with me and politely said we wAnt to be referred now as it's been over a year, and she did.

Well that was end of June and I'm still waiting for a bloody appointment, it's so frustrating so long story short, don't let them fob you off, get the ball rolling as it can be a long process!! Bonus for you is that you have plenty of time on your side xx

Thank you both for the advice that's the idea I was working with, that basically a lot of time would Be spent waiting for appointments etc and it would therefore make Sense to set the ball rolling sooner rather than later!

Mascara: I would be happy to have the bloods done and continue trying for 6 months if they came back normal and hopefully in that time begin to treat anything (if there is anything) that is wrong

The bfn's month after month really are soul destroying aren't they!

Hi, thought this was good timing as I have my first hospital appointment tomorrow after being referred.

I would also get your partner tested at the same time, no point checking your hormones etc if your partner isn't quite firing on all cylinders as they say.

As it was, a massive shock to my DH when he found out his weren't super sperm as previously thought.

Also, i would obviously inform as much as you can for how long you have been trying etc but try not to go into too much detail about cycle length etc, that's for them to diagnose if there are 'red flags' anywhere. In my experience I have never got a doctor to follow up tests and things if I have already been very well 'clued up' lol

Age really shouldn't be a factor in this, if you look at it in the most basic of terms, it's better for the NHS to have a healthy 24yr old have a baby as statistically there are less complications or interventions!

I was 24 when I went to see my GP earlier this year about trying to conceive.

My GP was extremely supportive.

Be clear & concise is my advice. It may be worth your partner popping to their GP too.

The doctor was ok actually, he has ordered bloods and has said to give it another 6 months because they are going from my miscarriage, not when we first started ttc....which is fair enough. I'm happy with that as he has given me a definite timeline where I know I can go back to him in 6 months and he will most definitely refer me it's strange how having a 'deadline' or a light at the end of the tunnel really helps actually!

He wasn't keen to look into anything to begin with until he asked about my cycles and I was able to explain how irregular they are, he agreed that they weren't completely normal.

Itsme: good luck at your appointment, do come back and let me know how it went, was anything flagged up with your bloods or were they all normal?

I think I'll have a little look into what these things are he's testing for are later, because I have to idea!

What bloods did he order? I'm pleased you're happy with the outcome so far.

Pixa: by the looks of it there's all the standard stuff (glucose, cholesterol etc) as well as FSH, LH, liver function, thyroid function, and loads of others that I can't make out what they say I'm satisfied with the outcome so far I think purely because I feel like I'm doing something

Doctor basically said we will start with that and see what comes back, any abnormalities will be investigated.

Did he also ask for Rubella and day 3/21 blood tests? We are just going through further investigations now, but if he hasn't explored those that should be what happens next. We were really lucky that our GP was great and moved quickly, especially after we had our infertility diagnosis.

Thanks pixa I'm really not sure what else is on there and I think I'll ask when imthere next, he wasn't too keen on doing too much as its only been about 5 months since the miscarriage so I have at least another 6 months before we are likely to get a referral, so I'm thankful he's doing something he told me if anything I would be diagnosed with secondary infertility, but he also wants to check for PCOS.

I've had my bloods taken three times now, I had one anovulatory cycle and two with high prolactin levels but did ovulate.

The fertility clinic was all a little vague if I'm honest!

All our results are 'borderline' whatever that means. And we have until April next year to get pregnant before our first round if IVF! Which to be honest I thought was a bit of a leap...

Which means 6 more cycles, AF is due today and sure enough I am feeling v crampy and miserable :( considering I feel like I'm in my millionth cycle already I'm not sure exactly if any things going to change between now and April but we can only hope!

ItsMe I feel your pain. If there is anything I have learnt about infertility, it's that we better get used to waiting. I really hope the next six months fly by for you.

Yeah the waiting is probably the worst bit, I'm not the most patient person anyway!

Well they took my blood and should have the results by the end of the week, I actually hope they find something, at least then I won't look so much like the crazy desperate-for-a-baby woman that I probably am!

itsme I have 6 cycles until I'm going to get a referral so I'm also on the countdown! Hopefully it will fly by for us both, I find sometimes (in order to save my sanity) that I have to focus on the fact that one day we will get to meet our baby, and once we do I don't think I will blink for fear of missing even a second of it

Well I have the results, apparently I have a folate deficiency I haven't been able to chat with the doc yet, but from browsing good old Google it can cause temporary infertility I think...
Am going to ask the doc for a copy of the results though so I can have a look myself
