Excuses for not drinking?!?!?

I work in a sales role, there is a big drinking culture with both clients and colleagues. I'm TTC baby number 2, had a miscarriage in July and because of that I'm trying to be extra careful and not drink alcohol at all while we are trying. But how do I get out of it?! It's partly my own fault as usually I like to partake in a few wines! I travel most weeks for work so need an excuse that lasts longer than one night out! Has anyone got any good excuses they have used?!

On a course of antibiotics? Interested to know why you are cutting out alcohol though. All of mine were conceived when I'd had one too many Smile

Dieting is a good excuse as booze has tons of calories. Or antibiotics, or painkillers for dental issues.
Remember the charity Go Sober for October month starts next week so that could work as the perfect cover too.

VikingLady · 23/09/2015 20:54

Dieting before Christmas!

Iwantakitchen · 23/09/2015 21:01

Dental stuff worked for me. Either wisdom tooth infects and antibiotics and/or pain killers. People generally relate to and hate problems with teeth and will not ask too many questions!

Justnapping · 23/09/2015 21:23

Wisdom teeth - I like it! And Go Sober for October, that is great too! Thanks for the replies

Sober for October is my one!! Grin

Then November I'll be 'dieting' ready for Xmas

December I'm really dreading... So many parties and it's my birthday... Dental antibiotics is a good one!

IMO nobody in the history of the world has ever believed a woman aged between 14 and 50 who says she's not drinking because she's on antibiotics.

Sober for October would work brilliantly for a month especially if backed up with a very laddish story about how you're backing up your DH and you've got a huge and humiliating bet on about who's going to crack first. But a month isn't going to cover you if you're only just TTC and this will be an ongoing issue. You might have to say you've had to quit indefinitely on medical advice and you don't wish to discuss it because it's simultaneously tedious, personal, annoying and TMI; have a G&T for me boys.

WhoTheFIsJeff · 23/09/2015 22:07

Antibiotics is the most obvious excuse if you want someone to guess. Agree though if this is going to be a long term thing you need a proper reason, although I never gave up alcohol, even after my mc.

I found it easiest to just pretend I WAS drinking. Order a glass of wine and take a few sips then pour down the sink in the loo, or order lemonade and say it has vodka in it etc. I find its more conspicuous if you don't order a drink and IME other people don't notice that much what others are doing

TheCatsMother99 · 25/09/2015 08:14

I'm with bingandflop on this one. I think that pretending to drink and pretending to be drunk is the way to go

Artandco · 25/09/2015 08:17

I would go ahead and drink or pretend to. So a glass of wine with meal maybe but sip slowly so it lasts, and then use diet/ lifestyle as reason to not drink more.

Justnapping · 26/09/2015 07:31

Ordering soda and lime and pretending it has vodka in it is a good plan. I just really don't want to drink in between ovulation and preg test just in case!

Hello Justnapping, I work in PR and had a similar problem when I started trying in May. I told my colleagues I had been to see a nutritionist who had put me on a 6 month plan to get fit and healthy (which was true) and not drinking was one of the parts of the plan. It means no one really questions me apart from to ask how I'm managing not to drink etc. I drink sparkling water with a slice of lime so I don't look "out of place" and it also means that when I do get pregnant it won't seem out of the ordinary that I've stopped drinking. Hope that helps!

InQuiteAPickle · 26/09/2015 09:25

Go sober for October or order a tonic water and pretend it has Gin in it. Order a coke and pretend it has vodka in etc. I did this when I was pregnant and didn't want anyone to know. Sometimes I even do it now if I feel like I've had too much to drink or I don't feel like drinking as it stops people telling you that you're miserable for not drinking Wink.

InQuiteAPickle · 26/09/2015 09:30

If someone buys you a drink then just sip it slowly or leave it somewhere when they're not looking. My friend made me have some pimms at her party, she insisted and I felt bad saying no so I had it. I bloody hate pimms so I chucked it on the grass when she wasn't looking. No one notices.

Crumbelina · 26/09/2015 09:34

Agree about the antibiotics. I gave this excuse at 6 weeks pregnant and everyone later admitted that they guessed straight away. Agree with InQuite - try to fake it with drinks - 0% beer in a glass. People tend to be pretty oblivious.

AnyoneButAndre · 26/09/2015 09:46

If all else fails and you can get to the bar unobserved you can get Becks Blue shandy in a pint glass.

DizzyNorthernBird · 26/09/2015 19:27

I can never understand the fuss about drinking. How about: "I'm trying to lead a healthier lifestyle so I've quit saturated fat, refined sugar and alcohol. I'm also going to work out more to get into shape".

Then hide whilst eating a bag of chips and mars bar Grin
