Going to start TTC in December wise to come off the pill now?

I got married in June and we are going on our honeymoon in December to mexico. I dont want to get pregnant before Decemeber/January ideally due to work ,the current circumstances we are in and selfishly because i want to enjoy the all inclusive resort we are going to in Mexico. Do you think it is wise to come off the pill now? i ask because i have just finished my years supply of the pill and wondering if its a good idea to go to my gp to get a few months supply or allow the pill to fully leave my body before TTC. I have been on the pill for 10+ years.

Thanks for any advice.

Hmm I fell in my 2nd cycle off the pill and was on it for about 8 years total (a year of the depo injection in the middle too) if you were to come off now you may need to use other precautions until your holiday otherwise you may end up falling straight away and being 9-12 weeks in December

lorelei9 · 07/09/2015 10:24

you risk getting pregnant if you miss a Pill. so no, don't come off it now.

lorelei9 · 07/09/2015 10:25

PS not selfish to want to enjoy your lovely trip to Mexico.

The stuff about letting the Pill hormones leave your body is pretty outdated. You might end up on your period on the honeymoon if you come off it, or even pregnant- lots of people get pregnant pretty quickly off the Pill! Unless you have a particular reason you need to maximise the chances of getting pregnant asap, which it doesn't sound like you do, I'd just stay on it. You can use the time to get on the folic acid and Vitamin D, get yourself in the best possible shape beforehand.

I fell pregnant 2nd cycle off the pill, first month trying. So you'd need to take other precautions obviously. Some people do find it hard for their bodies to get in to a routine after stopping the pill but everyone is different.

mumchkin · 07/09/2015 10:46

Not unless you want to get pregnant :) Many women are extremely fertile right after stopping the pill - it's a bit of a myth that it takes time for your body to becoming fertile again.

I came off the pill at new year after 10years on it. I'm still not pregnant but my cycles returned straight away and taking my temp, using opk's and other signs confirms I'm ovulating.

I waited 42 days for AF to arrive after first coming off it but now I'm like clockwork every 32days.

I think it's fine to stay on it but as QforCucumber said, if you do come off it I'd use other precautions.

Good luck and enjoy the honeymoon!

Hi nake we were in exactly the same position as you. We had lots of holidays this summer including one for our first wedding anniversary in June so plan was to try after that was all clear. After reading things on here we decided I would stop 1 month earlier than planned in May as it seemed it was taking a while for most to regain a "normal" cycle. All I can tell you is I'm SO glad I did as my cycles have been 49 days followed by 38. If you don't want to 'try' yet I would suggest using condoms for the next few months and get to know your cycles until December. Wish I had done that now as it seems a long way off for me at the moment with such long/ irregular cycles it's so difficult to judge ovulation! Good luck xx

Thank you so much everyone for the advice. I'm going to talk about it with my husband as if i do decide to come off it now he has to be happy wearing a condom until December. I think it maybe easier to just wait to come off the pill closer to December as we don't really want to risk it.

Did anyone have any side effects when they came off the pill? I've heard some people's hormones are a bit all over the place and a couple of my friends got quite spotty.

Cant wait for the honeymoon :-)

Hi Nake,

I'm in the same boat as you only a month out - we will TTC in Jan. If you fancy buddying up let me know, I was thinking of starting a thread nearer the time.

I'm dreading the side effects of coming off the pill - I was put on it for acne when I was in my teens (now 34) and then when I came off it for a month ten years ago loads of my hair fell out so went straight back on it! Can't wait!

Tho x

Most people's fertility does return quickly after stopping the pill. However the first break (and only break I've had from the pill in 10 yrs) it took me 10months to have a period.. And I know quite a few others who were similar. And this time I stopped with a plan to TTC next year (using condoms till then) and I'm on cycle day 54 and no signs of anything yet. They do say pill can mask signs of pcos but my cycles were always regular before I started pill so I think it's just one of those things that differs from person to person.

Hopefully yours will return immediately but just thought I'd give you a different view. I wanted to settle into cycles before TTC.. Plus like you we are going on honeymoon/work stuff etc.

Good luck, have a great holiday!

smellsofelderberries · 07/09/2015 18:11

I would come off now and get to know your cycle unmedicated, but it depends on how desperate you are to get pregnant. I came off a few months before we started trying and we just used a condom. Also, the sex now for me post-pill is SO MUCH BETTER than when I was on the pill, so keep that in mind for your honeymoon too Wink

Just wanted to share that I am in a similar position, we have decided to TTC our first child after the Christmas period. I take cerelle and generally dont have a period while on it (which has been ok). I briefly discussed this at an appointment with a nurse and she shared that particularly with this pill it is out of your system within a day or two of stopping taking it therefore at this this point I am thinking I will carry on taking it until we start trying.

sophied1983 · 11/09/2015 21:07

Deffo. It took six weeks for my 1st period to arrive and another 45 days for the 2nd one... it takes time to get the hormones out of your system for some people. What brand of Pill are you on?

sophied1983 · 11/09/2015 21:08

Plus the doctor's advice was that I'd be 'good to go' as soon as I stop taking it... but never explained all the horrible symptoms. I thought I was pregnant as felt so sick, but was obviously my hormones.

Rainy34 · 11/09/2015 22:24

I would come off it now, iv been off the pill two year this christmas and still trying,
