Aspirin in Pregnancy?

Wondering if anyone has taken aspirin through pregnancy and your thoughts on it.

I've had one normal pregnancy - DD is almost 4. Since then I've had two first-trimester miscarriages, and then earlier this year our DS was stillborn at 36 weeks. He was a little bit small (9th centile, same as DD), and I'd had on-off bleeding throughout the first 12 weeks. My doctor has suggested it could be worth 'giving aspirin a go' if I get pregnant again but I'm anxious about everything taking medicines in pregnancy.

Would love to hear your stories.

I took asprin in my last pregnancy (5th dc) as I give birth to small babies & I was told it improves the blood flow through the umbilical cord.

I was a high risk for a few reasons which included low bmi & anti bodies in my blood that passed on to my dd resulting in neonatal jaundice & a blood transfusion.None of which was because of the asprin. She is now a healthy 18 month old

My consultant says the same thing about umbilical cord blood flow - but that's never been picked up as an issue before. Lovely to hear it was a success for you

I've been instructed to takes a child's aspirin every day from 20 weeks. My midwife friend says it's something preeclamsia (can't spell it!) but I also have a raised bmi so it could be that too and she's too poilte to mention it.

Thanks Honey. I know about the pre eclampsia thing, though I didn't have any problems with BP last time. He wants me to take it from about 6-30 weeks...

I'm on my 4th pregnancy, my second on aspirin: 75mg a day. Ds1 was 2nd percentile and reduced fluid. I then had a 1st tri MC. With pg #3 with ds2 I was on aspirin from 16 weeks. It didn't really help, as he had to come as 35 wks due to reduced fluid again. There were no bleeding issues when I had a CS. this time I've been on aspirin since 6 weeks. I'm now 33 weeks and the signs are that this baby / placenta is doing better than ds2 at the same stage. The consultant said it's important to start it before the placenta is fully formed (ie before 8 weeks) to get the benefit. Ideally from the day you get your BFP. If you have a history of recurrent miscarriage it might be worth taking it from ovulation or even continuously whilst ttc. I'd seek proper medical advice though, not rely on the wisdom on MN. My GP actually was not helpful in this regard, and this is why I only started at 6 weeks, which is when I saw a obstetrics doctor on EPAU for a reassurance scan. I was also told that my age (37) alone was an indication for aspirin.

If you're taking it under medical advice then it's because there's a reason to take it. Doctors and pharmacists are very cautious about medication during pregnancy so if they are recommending it then I'd do it

As you know my bloods were off because dd2 had Edwards. When I went to kings and they looked at my bloods and the soft markers they were amazed she'd made it to 22 weeks. I sometimes wonder if the aspirin kept her going longer. When I told the docs at kings they seemed a bit pissed that I'd been advised to take it when my bloods were so obviously off.

Saying that, aspirin won't do any harm.

Thanks all. I'm asking here as many of you are based in the UK - I'm not, and I've seen a few instances where things are suggested by medics not for their evidence base, but for their potential to increase income.
