TTC or early pregnancy and taking Malaria Tablets (Malarone)?

Hi there,

Does anyone have any experience of taking Malarone whilst TTC or in their first trimester?

I have had a look at previous threads on MN but they are from 5 /6 years ago and wanted to know whether there was any more up to date information on people's experiences.

The official line is that it is thought to be safe but they can't prove otherwise as they can't exactly run medical trials on pregnant women. This info seems to be a few years old as well.

I am curious to hear about what pregnant women who live in malarial countries and are taking anti-malarials over a long period of time do - are they never to become pregnant as the official line is that you shouldn't take the medication when pregnant?

TIA

Have you spoken to your GP? Malarone is nasty stuff, used to take it a few years ago when I had to travel to certain countries. I can't answer your question I'm afraid but I'd be tempted to say it would be safer to err on the side of caution and take the Meds rather than risk catching the disease yourself and possibly passing it onto your baby....? Or avoid travelling if you've got real concerns.

Sorry if that wasn't much help!
