Risks of getting pregnant?

Hi everyone.

Now I know nobody can tell me if I'm pregnant or not obviously but just wondering what the chances are going by cycle dates etc, hoping somebody more knowledgable than me can help?

I had a contraception failure on day 7 of my cycle at the start of the bank holiday weekend. My cycles were usually around 30 days though my last two have been 24 and 28 days respectively. I am terrified of getting pregnant. I don't know whether I'm in my fertile time or not and I've been getting conflicting advice off the internet. I guess I'm hoping that someone can put my mind at ease for the next 3 weeks

Ovulation is generally 14 days before your period so day 10 for a 24 day cycle or day 14 of a 28 day cycle. Spermacide can survive ~5 days. So if this cycle is a short one (not that you can tell unless you have been tracking ovulation) then you would have the possibility of becoming pregnant. If you don't wish to get pregnant then the morning after pill is effective up to 72 hours after sex. Or you could possibly get an emergency coil put in if its been longer.

hi buildmeupbutterbuttercup, as you're terrified of getting pregnant did you manage to take the morning after pill emergency contraception? This can be effective at preventing pregnancy if taken up to 72 after the mishap.
If you did not take it, and you've had unprotected sex, yes there is a chance you could be pregnant.
As you are only on cycle day 7, it's not as likely as if you were a few days further in to your cycle. As its most common to ovulate around day 10-14. But sperm can hang around up there and theoretically you can fall pregnant throughout your cycle as ovulayion can very a fair bit from month to month.
There's no definitive answer as you'll know, until your period is due. So you've got a long couple of weeks ahead.
Hope it's not worrying you too much.

While genome is right that the luteal phase (time between ovulation and your period) is generally fixed, 14 days is only the average. It is normal to have a luteal phase somewhere between 10 and 16 days (mine is 12 days for example). Other women obviously fall outside of that, but between 10 and 16 days is the normal range. As she also said, sperm can survive for 5 days or possibly more in the right environment so you just can't know.

Did you take the morning after pill?

A home pregnancy test 2 weeks after the contraception failure should give you a clear answer.

I didn't take the MAP as I cant afford £30 (unexpected car repair has crippled us financially this month ) and obviously doctors not open until the Tuesday which would have been past the 72 hours.

I have hypochondria, I take medication for it which makes it worse. I'm so anxious at the thought of being pregnant and being a high risk for a dvt i feel sick. I have come so far in my recovery but just feel stuck now. A horrible two weeks is coming my way thanks everyone. x

If it was the beginning of the bank holiday weekend (Saturday?) then you can test in a week.

It won't help you right now but in future, there are ways of getting the MAP without paying even if your GP is closed.

Thanks I didn't know that. To be honest after this I think sex will be off the cards completely for a while so shouldn't need it in the future!

Just wanted to bump this thread for a bit of hand holding, as I am 2 days late. I can't get a doctor's appointment nor can I even afford a test til Friday.

I am in an utter state. I cannot stop crying and I'm living in total fear and probably going to have a breakdown soon.

Buttercup you can get tests for less that £ in a Home Bargains, or if you don't have one of them near you then you can get tests from a Poundland or similar (for £1 obv), you don't always have to fork out a tenner for a test.

It sounds like you're completely stressed out, which could in itself be the cause of your period being late. Statistically it's more likely that you're not pregnant than that you are, hold on to that thought until you can get yourself a test and know for certain.

Do you have a local family planning / brook advisory centre you can visit?
It really isn't isn't the end of the world. If you are pregnant and don't want to be, there are s lot of optons open to you.

It's not the end of the world, but I have battled a fear of blood clots for 2 years. I have been through therapy and currently on medication for hypochondria. I could never ever willingly put myself through something that could increase my risk as I am a high risk anyway and I lose sleep at night with worries over it.

Unfortunately I live in a crap town with a handful of shops no home bargains etc, mostly bookies and takeaways and s pound stretcher which don't have any. There's a small lloyds pharmacy which only have brand ones. Things are tight this week as I've had to replace the cooker and have lent money out which I have not yet had back different thread altogether!

Another thought - might it be possible to get in to see a nurse at your surgery rather than trying to get a Dr's appointment?

Sorry I dufnt mean the not the end of the world comment to come across like that. I realise its a very stressful situation for you and was just trying to offer some perspective.
purple made s great suggestion about going to the nurse as an option for a test. It would be best to get a test asap as the sooner you know, the sooner you can make plans on how to cope with the result.
remrber that if you do manage to get a test tomorrow / Friday, to save some first morning wee as its best to test with that as your wee later in the day will be more diluted and could give an immaculate result.

Oh I know don't worry just trying to explain why I'm a bit more scared/paranoid than most!

It's not that I don't want a baby, I'd love another, I just could never cope with the potential health risks. I'm already on my way to a nervous breakdown and I'm not even 100% sure yet. (In my head I am though obviously lol)

If you ring 111 at a weekend or evening on bank holidays any time out of normal hour's they can sort the map out for you free of charge.
Might help some one in the future.

as sizethree suggested I would head to family planning clinic (or whatever they're called now) who could test you immediately and give you help and advice whatever the result - is there one nearby?

if not maybe head to you dr surgery and beg for an appt with the nurse if you can wait around 'til she's free?

Nothing within walking distance nope. At our surgery the appointment wait is 3 weeks but they have an urgent care walk in in the mornings. You need to give your reasons to the receptionist and then they decide whether it's urgent or not. It's annoying for the people who aren't 'urgent' but can't wait 3 weeks either. I will ring and see what they suggest though.

Had some cramps earlier thought yes this is it but they went and nothing happened. So stressed!

Okay I've just done a test. Lloyds pharmacy early one, 10 ml/u. It's negative. Part of me wants to scream and shout in joy but I am aware that plenty of people have false negatives so I an still worried, thought not as much

I'm probably over thinking this and I'm sure it isn't this simple but am I right in thinking this?

If thr accident occurred on may 24th then the most the sperm would live to is 31st May? So if I ovulated around that time then I would be at least 18dpo which should in theory have shown up on an early pregnancy test with a sensitivity of 10? Or am I totally wrong and clinging on to any hope the test is right!

I think you're in the clear lovely. That is a super sensitive test and you're 18 days past ovulation (I show positive on a test at 10 DPO) so it could just be the anxiety holding back your period. Very much hope AF shows up soon.

Thank you! With my dd I took a test about 2 weeks late so not used to testing early and working timings etc out so you've all helped me .

I still have another one which I will resist taking until Saturday at least and fingers crossed it comes soon so I can stop worrying and move onto brain tumors and blood clots instead
