TTC - Period late, negative test results!

Hi all, this is my first post on here!
My cycle is 33 days and I'm regular every month, me and my husband have been TTC for 2 years now and it feels like it's never going to happen! This month has been different though, AF was due yesterday and she's still a no show. Every month without fail I can feel my period coming because, I get really sore boobs and I get period pains, these usually come in the week running up to my period. This month I haven't had either, so we decided to test with the early detection tests, all 5 of these came back negative. We took a standard test this morning, with me being a day late and yet again BFN. I'm really confused, I don't know if because we want it so much we're convincing ourselves that I may be pregnant or, if I actually am.
Would love some advice/opinions please, could really do with talking to other people who have been through this or who currently are :)
Thank you!

Welcome to Mumsnet!

There is at least one thread a month saying exactly the same thing so that should give you some idea of how common this is. A late period with a negative test is sometimes due to you being pregnant but it not being picked up yet. Sometimes this is because you ovulated late. The main reason for a delayed period, apart from pregnancy is delayed ovulation (which makes your period correspondingly late) or an anovulatory cycle where you didn't ovulate (normal for this to happen sometimes). Occasionally, your period will just not turn up and no reason will be found for it. In my experience and that of most women on here, the GP will not do anything until you've missed two periods if this is the case.

If you have been trying for two years with no success, what help are you receiving and what tests have you had done?

You'll find a lot of support here on MN. I found the site invaluable when I was trying to get pregnant first time round. Somehow many, many years later I'm still here and waffling about Other Subjects mostly.

Thank you and thanks for a quick response! :)

We had done a little research and seen this, I think it's just for peace of mind I guess. I just find it really odd if it does show up late or not at all, as I've been so regular in the past. Just wishful thinking, have to keep my fingers crossed and see what happens, the waiting game is the worst!

My husband has had a sperm test and I have had swabs and blood tests, we are awaiting the results for my blood tests. My GP said once we have those back, the next step would be an ultra sound and to see a specialist. As me and my husband are young (as the GP said), there's no rush and plenty of time. Which I can understand but, when you've been trying for 2 years, it's also frustrating to hear.

That's good, think I just needed someone who wasn't a doctor to talk too :) Thank you!

I'm going through a similar thing right now. I'm 11 days late. I'm never late! Always every 27 days without fail. The only time I was late, I was pregnant! But at the time I only took two tests. The first (at about 3 weeks late) was negative. Then after a second missed period I dug out the second test and it came up positive! So it does happen. I hope you get the result you're looking for. Smile

This forum is like a lifeline for me right now! Xxx

Hi :)

I'm 1 day late and it's killing me! The suspense and the waiting game, I can't imagine how you feel being 11 days late. So you didn't get a positive until you'd missed a second period? Is that common? Not sure I could survive that long! Thank you, I hope we do too!

I think it's becoming mine and fast xxx

That's right - I didn't get a positive until I missed a second period, however I didn't test in between (roughly) week 3 and 8, because I believed the first negative test!

The suspense and waiting is horrible. Yesterday I thought I got a positive, but I read the test wrong. It's really upset me (even though I'm laughing at myself for being so dumb!), and now I feel like I'm done with it all. Just in the sense I don't want to put myself through this anymore. What will be will be. (But if I meant that I doubt I would be on this forum right now. Ha ha). I just feel like I need a break from (as you say) the waiting and suspense! X

katherine7172 · 10/04/2015 12:46

Ahhh I see, I think I'm just going to wait until sometime next week before a take another test, try and space it out a bit then.

Oh no! That's the worst, I think everyone TTC has done that at some point so you're not on your own. I know, we keep saying we'll just see what happens and stop stressing out, but we're both on edge still. Hence why I'm here, haha! I know, so do I, not sure how to then when it's all I think about day and night :/ xxx

My period was late a few months ago. I am well past having babies, DH has had a vasectomy. It was the first time I'd ever been a week late outside of pregnancy. I know in my case it was because I hadn't ovulated and I was wondering if it would make things late, early or different from usual. It's the sort of thing which would have sent me doolally whilst trying to conceive. It took a year and a half to get pregnant the first time round and I found the whole thing difficult. The anxiety and the dashed hopes and the symptom spotting. Your life becomes so completely cyclical. I don't know about you but I was a weird mix of bored and angry.

I always took comfort from the fact that in some countries they don't even think about investigating if you haven't got pregnant for 2 years. It can take quite a while but I absolutely think it's the right thing to start the ball rolling with some investigations. With my second, it took one night of trying! It's the most nonsensical process in the world...

Stick around on Mumsnet. Chances are, at least one of us has been there before.

katherine7172 · 11/04/2015 16:39

I'm with you on the anxiety, dashed hopes and symptom spotting! I feel like my mind and body are playing tricks on me constantly, trying to figure out if I'm having period symptoms or pregnancy symptoms, they can be so similar it's hard to distinguish. I think for me it's frustration, feel like lately it's changed to fed up and like it's never going to happen. Which I know is probably ridiculous! That's very true, just the waiting game which is the worst!

Thank you :)
