TTC with PCOS

Ainat266 · 15/03/2015 14:25

Are there any other ladies out there trying to conceive with PCOS? Or any success stories of conceiving with PCOS?

We've been ttc and off of bc since August. Since then I've been diagnosed with PCOS and put on Metformin. I am overweight, especially for my height as I'm only short - but am trying to lose the weight. I'm almost at a 10% weight loss since getting the PCOS diagnosis in November 14. I haven't had any periods since coming off of bc in August 14, apart from what I'm guessing was a withdrawal bleed (that happened pretty much straight away - end of August) and a couple of very light bleeds that lasted no longer than a day.

I'm just feeling all a bit fed up now and think I need to hear from others that are either in a similar boat or have been able to have healthy normal pregnancies despite the PCOS.

Oh and Gin, I'm not sure if it's my imagination (probably is!) but since taking 4g of inositol a day for a week my appetite seems so much less. I don't know if that's due to a change in metabolism (it could just be stress induced) but I don't want to lose weight (my BMI is 18.5) so I'm eating even though I'm not hungry!

PontyGirl · 20/04/2015 19:00

exciting times ab!!

I will be joining the pity party! 15dpo, no AF and not pregnant so just assuming that perhaps I didn't ovulate at all and that FF is a massive twat. I can deal with not being pregnant, fine, it's going to take me a while, what's new. But no period? Angry Angry Angry

I'm cutting to the chase anyway. If my period doesn't come in a few days then I'm booking in with my GP and getting this ball rolling!

PontyGirl · 20/04/2015 19:01

great news BTW rosebud! what a turn up for the books!!

eskimolaura · 20/04/2015 19:38

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I last posted here; need to catch up.

Congratulations bucket on your AF! Don't feel bad for getting down; I think on this thread, we have more bad days than good days and we know how you feel!

Drew Sorry for the result. Have you been in touch with your GP yet?

Rosie I'm afraid I'm not in your situation, but I hope that someone can give you some advice soon. Flowers Good luck with the clomid!

Rufus Sorry for your rubbish specialist, but yay for the follicle and the surge. Have you been DTD lots now?

Ab Things are moving for you now for sure! Exciting times! Make sure to keep us all updated!

Rose Really pleased that things are also moving forward for you my lovely Smile You must have been in bits to hear the words 'July'. What a good job that you pushed for a cancellation!

Ponty So sorry that you haven't had any news. It's the limbo that is absolutely the worst thing. You almost lose faith, thinking 'well, what's the point; if I'm not ovulating or having a period?...' Did you come off the pill 81 days ago, or is that since your last AF? I'm sorry, I can't remember. Good luck in the next few days if you decide to contact your GP Flowers

Gin How are you doing my lovely? When is your next appointment?

A couple of days ago, I got a letter from my consultant at the clinic. It said that he had received the Ultrasound scan and it was 'reported as normal.' He said 'we shall hopefully see you at your follow-up.' Ladies, I'm confused. Does this mean that I don't have PCOS? During my scan, if you remember, the sonographer said that I had lots of follicles around my ovaries and that they were all the same size, but that none of them were dominant. She also said that my ovaries were slightly enlarged, but that could have been the effects of the contraceptive pill. I came off the pill last November and have not had a sniff of AF since then... I finished my prog pills last Thursday and am beginning to get some really tiny cramps, so I'm hoping for a withdrawal bleed in the next couple of days and then I can book in for a HSG. DH took in a sperm sample today (he was supposed to go last week, but didn't make it in!)

Can I ask what you all think to this? I have no experience of any of it... can you still ovulate without periods? Or is no period a sure sign of no ovulation? If the scan came back as 'normal', does that completely rule out PCOS? If so, why the lack of AF? I'm so sorry for all the questions. I was totally expecting a letter that confirmed PCOS, especially after hearing that my ovaries were enlarged and that I had no dominant follicles. Do you think I will be able to get clomid if AF doesn't return soon? Does that even work for lack of AF? Again, I really apologise for the questions. I'm just not sure what to think now... Sad

Rufus200 · 20/04/2015 19:51

Ponty Sorry I can't remember if you have a normalish cycle or not? What is your prev length? What signs did you have of ovulation? My AF was late a couple of cycles back but with hindsight I had thought my 1st LH surge was me ovulating but it was really a fake pcos surge and I should have DTD for at least a week longer.

eskimo Yes you can ovulate without periods. I would have thought that if your scan only showed normal follicles then you don't have PCO but I would wait and see what the Dr says having said that I don't trust Drs at all
Yes you should be able to get clomid, you don't have to have PCOS to get clomid just a lack of ovulation. Hope AF comes soon weird thing to say to women TTC

PontyGirl · 20/04/2015 20:15

thanks Eskimo and Rufus I didn't have a period for 3 months then has provera then had a bleed so since then I've been charting and appeared to have a clear temp shift, but here I am 15dpo and Nada!

Eskimo I think you probably do have pcos - I have had two normal scans where they reported back to my gp that I definitely didnt have PCO, but she diagnosed me due to lack of period and weight gain. when I was pregnant, they scanned my ovaries and they were covered in cysts, so I don't think scans are hugely reliable as the cysts come and go.

eskimolaura · 20/04/2015 20:26

Thanks Rufu and Ponty for your replies so far. It's a confusing world out there isn't it? Confused I guess I just have to keep going with the tests and once the HSG is over, we'll have to go for DTD EOD if we can, for as long as possible. Ponty I'm a little scared of opening the whole temping can of worms... I have a thermometer and a username of FF, but I'm not sure temping is the way forward. I tend to get a little bit obsessed with things... Hmm

RoseBud2015 · 20/04/2015 20:33

Eskimo from the NICE guidelines regarding diagnosis of PCOS:

"Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) should be diagnosed if two of three of the following criteria are present, as long as other causes of menstrual disturbance and hyperandrogenism are excluded:

  1. Infrequent or no ovulation (usually manifested as infrequent or no menstruation).
  2. Clinical or biochemical signs of hyperandrogenism (such as , acne, or male pattern alopecia), or elevated levels of total or free testosterone.
  3. Polycystic ovaries on ultrasonography, defined as the presence of 12 or more follicles in at least one ovary, measuring 2–9 mm diameter, or increased ovarian volume (greater than 10 mL).

Polycystic ovaries do not have to be present to make the diagnosis, and the finding of polycystic ovaries does not alone establish the diagnosis."

So I have 1 & 3 and some excessive hair growth but not as noticeable as some others. Do you think you have 2 or more of these criteria? If so you most likely do have PCOS.... it just might be that the scan didn't show cysts at the time of your ultrasound- I hope that helps! Smile

RoseBud2015 · 20/04/2015 20:36

And Eskimo- I have found temping rather depressing as it shows no raising temps and so no ov for me. (I get obsessive about things too!) But at least I now know for sure that I'm not ov'ing! There are pros and cons, but for me it has been worth the stress to know I am not going crazy and need to push for help!

RoseBud2015 · 20/04/2015 20:37

*raised

eskimolaura · 20/04/2015 20:46

Thank you Rose At the moment, I only tick the box for number 1. I have put on about half a stone since coming off the pill but my BMI is just over 25 and since Christmas, I have not been watching what I eat. I don't have signs of 2. I think that 3 would have been detected at this ultrasound if it had been present, but as you say, it just might not have been there this time Confused As for the temping, I am hopefully going to have CD21 and CD28 bloods after this bleed, so will not need to temp, but maybe I should start this week and see if my temping is in line with the bloods; treat it as a bit of a practice run? Thanks all so much for your help and advice.

PontyGirl · 20/04/2015 20:47

Eskimo Temping is a lot of bother, tbh. I think that as long as you DTD as much as possible and just use the temping as a guide to see if you do see any temp shifts. That's what I'm going to do moving forward anyway!

PopcornPip · 20/04/2015 21:03

Hey guys, sorry for lack of posts, been a bit preoccupied with work and stuff. Might be getting a promotion soon, which has made me a little anxious about if/when I might be getting my bfp. It shouldn't matter I know but I can't help it.
That aside, we dtd cd8 and cd9 and will try and dtd cd 11, 13 and 14. FX.
rose that's great news that things are moving forward for you. Well done on bring proactive Smile

PopcornPip · 20/04/2015 21:03

*being not bring!

Ginfizz90 · 21/04/2015 09:46

Hi everyone,

Heard back from my healthcare company they want me to post the referral. I had emailed it before, they seem to be very fussy but hoping that's good. So will post tomorrow! Since going back on the pill I am feeling so much better! No more pelvic pain or cramping. Skin cleared up. I don't have enough to do any longer, might ask my gp if I can have a further 3 months

Rosieblossom123 · 21/04/2015 11:30

Hey everyone! How are we all doing? Been trying so hard to lose weight all week eating really well and exercising, just hoped on the scales and not even lost a pound!!! Posted my form to private clinic this morning- hope to hear something in 3 working days

PontyGirl · 22/04/2015 15:25

hi all! gin - I feel your pain with the distinct lack of weight loss. so crushing! it's really getting me down at the moment. feel like I need to do something to kick start it, no idea what though.

17dpo here and no period and I haven't bothered doing a test because they are all bfn as expected so now I'm thinking maybe I didn't ovulate at all? I'll post my chart in a min, let me know what you think.

hope everyone is okay!

PontyGirl · 22/04/2015 15:29

Voila...

PontyGirl · 22/04/2015 15:34

never mind! I messed around with the settings on FF and now one of them says I didn't ovulate, the rest just move the coverline around. so I guess I better get back to DTD! Smile but inside I'm Angry Angry Angry

Rosieblossom123 · 22/04/2015 15:45

So I just got a BFP :) couldn't believe it, I was convinced I wasn't and I thought what a waste of money on the test and when it said pregnant I was so shocked! a week before my gyn how strange Flowers.

Good luck to everyone xx

RoseBud2015 · 22/04/2015 16:38

OMG!!! Our first BFP!!! Congratulations Rosie That is fantastic news!

Are you able to give us some stats? i.e. what did you take this month? When did you DTD? When do you believe you ov'ed? etc

A very happy and healthy 8-9 months to you Smile

RoseBud2015 · 22/04/2015 16:42

Hi Ponty

I wouldn't be so sure! From my limited experience of temp charts, it does look like you have ov'ed on cd20 and have then had a dip on cd27! The other 2 odd temps on cd25 and 26 were taken at a different time so may not count?!?! Have you tried discarding those 2 only?

How do you feel? Does AF feel like its on its way?

Your chart looks a hell of a lot better than mine!!!

RoseBud2015 · 22/04/2015 16:58
