TTC with PCOS

Ainat266 · 15/03/2015 14:25

Are there any other ladies out there trying to conceive with PCOS? Or any success stories of conceiving with PCOS?

We've been ttc and off of bc since August. Since then I've been diagnosed with PCOS and put on Metformin. I am overweight, especially for my height as I'm only short - but am trying to lose the weight. I'm almost at a 10% weight loss since getting the PCOS diagnosis in November 14. I haven't had any periods since coming off of bc in August 14, apart from what I'm guessing was a withdrawal bleed (that happened pretty much straight away - end of August) and a couple of very light bleeds that lasted no longer than a day.

I'm just feeling all a bit fed up now and think I need to hear from others that are either in a similar boat or have been able to have healthy normal pregnancies despite the PCOS.

Hi popcorn, no side effects at all!! It's weird though my temps are defo still elevated I know they are meant to be for two weeks before AF. So hopefully that's a good sign. How are you managing to get your cycles so regular I'm jealous! Lol xx

Ginfizz90 · 11/04/2015 15:32

Rufus, did you find it made any other impact other than metabolism?

Rufus200 · 11/04/2015 17:06

I started Inositol just before I came off the pill so I don't know if it has reduced my PCOS symptoms as I didn't have any on the pill but my symptoms are in full swing now. I am covered in spots, my hair is falling out and all the body hair I had lasered off 15 years ago has suddenly started to regrow! I also suffer from hypnagogic hallucinations (I hallucinate before I fall asleep and when I wake in the night, meaning I see ghosts, demons and giants bugs in my bedroom). I've had a 95% reduction in my hallucinations since starting Inositol, although it hasn't helped my insomnia and I still spend large amounts of the night awake.

I did have GI upsets for the 1st two weeks on it but I have IBS so most tablets cause me probs. I take 1000mg twice a day in tablet form. I bought them from puritan's pride, which does huge discount offers if you sign up to their newsletter, just keep your order under £15 as it comes from the USA, otherwise you have to pay import tax.

I have found out from Prof Greene at UCL that it is safe to take during pregnancy, so I'm going to stay on it when I get my BFP as I don't want my weight to shoot up but also PCOS suffered have higher risk of miscarriage and gestational diabetes due to their abnormal sugar metabolism!

PopcornPip · 11/04/2015 17:39

Hi gin I can only put it down to being on the pill. When I came off it I assumed my cycles would become irregular again but they haven't, it might still happen!

Ginfizz90 · 11/04/2015 17:49

Wow rufus seems like it's really been a help for you. That must have been awful having hallucinations.

So lucky they're regular, im sure they will stay that way! I don't think I've helped myself, I was on the mini pill which stops your periods completely. I have an old pack of the normal combined pill, do you think I'm crazy if I take it for a month and then stop so I can have a AF?

PopcornPip · 11/04/2015 18:15

I definitely wouldn't use any old stuff but you could get a new pack?

RoseBud2015 · 11/04/2015 19:20

Sorry AF arrived popcorn At least you're safely onto your next cycle now... every cloud and all that! Flowers

Gin having looked more closely at my inositol tub (same one as you got from Amazon) a quarter of a teaspoon is only 600mg! You would need a lot more than that to be in line with PCOS research quantities! So I took a slightly heaped teaspoon full (about 3000 mg I would imagine!) Would it be worth upping your dose a touch?

PontyGirl · 11/04/2015 20:43

I take half a teaspoon morning and evening, no idea what that works out as!

popcorn hope you're feeling okay xo

PontyGirl · 11/04/2015 20:45

Rufus I NEEED that huge change in metabolism!

Rufus200 · 11/04/2015 22:36

Gin it wouldn't be a real period if you went on the pill, it would just be a withdrawal bleed but it might reset your cycle. I was told by my Dr that I might need to go back on the pill if my cysts get too bad, the pill suppresses cysts. I think that to start an IVF cycle they put you on the pill so that they can control when the withdrawal bleed is and then control the next cycle. All tablets should have an exp date stamped on them.

Ginfizz90 · 12/04/2015 09:21

Thanks for the info on the inositol I will start having more now!

AbFab86 · 12/04/2015 09:33

Sorry I haven't been around for a day or so. It was our last day of the Easter holidays yesterday so spent most of it in denial Smile Back at work now. Booo.

It's interesting about the inositol. I started inositol, agnus castus and increased my metformin dose all at the same time, so if I see results I won't know what has caused them! Will keep taking the inositol though. It's expensive here but should be able to get some sent to the UK a for someone to bring back in a couple of weeks.

Used my fancy new thermometer this morning to start temping with now AF has stopped. It has a recall function so I took my temperature, didn't look and put it back down so I could sleep through my snooze time Grin Once I was up and about I picked it up to record the temperature and it just said 'Lo'. 'Lo'?!?! That's no friggin use!! Going back to my bog standard digital thermometer now.

Ginfizz90 · 12/04/2015 09:42

I started back on my pillHmm least that way I will be able to track from cd1. I may ask my doctor if I can have 6 months supply to just try and keep things regular and in a pattern. I am really reluctant to start anything else just yet

PontyGirl · 12/04/2015 16:01

hi all, hope everyone is okay.

not sure what's going on with me, FF says I've ov'd but I'm getting loads of ewcm. The joys!

I read something the other day that suggested that women with pcos have a better store of eggs, and so have a better chance of conceiving at 35+ years than women that don't have it. Not sure how true it is, can't find where I read it now

AbFab86 · 13/04/2015 07:58

That's all well and good ponty but with our selfish ovaries it's no use having good eggs if they stay put Grin I'm kidding, it's really good that we're likely to have good eggs. We just need to find the guys who broke into the vaults in London to try and get our eggs to come out and play!

Gin FX going back on the pill works for you to get your cycles back in order. It's definitely worth a shot.

AF made a last-ditch attempt at being around, which just about dragged it out to 5 days, which I'm a bit happier with. Our DTDathon started last night. Feeling very positive and happy today, not sure why (been up since 4am!) but I'm not arguing against it! Noticed a lot of negativity on some of the buses so I'm staying well clear. We've got a hard enough time of it dealing with PCOS and all it's delightful symptoms, we don't need to be turned on by other women if we're lucky enough to get BFPs. In fact, I'm going to start turning on people who don't get BFPs from now on.

You have been warned.

RoseBud2015 · 13/04/2015 08:45

Morning all!

How is everyone today?

Ab I noticed all the drama on the buses too! A lot of rather hurtful things were said, and I too will be keeping well clear. Its a shame because the buses used to be such nice threads to belong to. But the last few months I've only felt comfortable being a lurker.... partly due to PCOS complications but also partly because of some rather judgemental passengers.

Gin it will be interesting to see how the pill works for you! Definitely worth a go! Smile Are you feeling a bit more positive now you've made the decision?

More painful cramping for me today and yesterday, but still no AF. Think it might be time for another doctors visit! Sad

PontyGirl · 13/04/2015 09:07

I have an occasional lurk on the buses. It's a shame that it's been like that, they are usually such a good source of support (even for lurkers!)

loving your words of encouragement ab, here's to lots of sex and that bfp that is surely heading your way Brew

rosebud I hope the cramping dies down - I definitely thing it's worth a trip to the gp to try and determine what's occurring!

DrewOB · 13/04/2015 09:08

Hey all,
Still feeling not right here so going to GP on Wednesday. She didn't want to do any bloods or other tests, despite that when I was diagnosed I would get help once I started trying. Has anyone got experience of getting ultrasounds and bloods on private insurance?

PontyGirl · 13/04/2015 09:29

drew I'm sorry your gp is being so unhelpful. I don't think some of them understanding how crushing and all-consuming wanting a baby can be. Go on Wednesday and be insistent that you want them to be more thorough. We tend to need a little more help than women without PCOS and it really annoys me that they don't recognise that asap. fx crossed for you for Wednesday Thanks

Rufus200 · 13/04/2015 09:52

drew my medical insurance doesn't cover anything for fertility but your Dr can carefully word things that say it is investigation for pelvic pain (cysts causing pain). Unlikely they will pay for fertility bloods like AMH but may pay for testosterone levels etc. You need to check your small print, mine says it clearly in the section on childbirth. The UK private insurance industry is useless for fertility! My insurance won't pay for me to have smears anymore but will pay for cancer treatment, surely preventing cancer is a better spend of money!

Gin I hope the pill works and gets you back on a regular cycle, fingers crossed

DrewOB · 13/04/2015 10:23

Ok, so request referral for pelvic pain and hormone unbalance? I think it's a cist or worse :(

Ginfizz90 · 13/04/2015 12:12

I am in the process of sorting through my private referral. I'm not entirely happy with how my gp has worded mine, she says can they help me conceive? I'm not sure they will take this but I have been referred to gynae not fertility clinic so here's hoping. They are being fussing with who the letter is addressed to and have to state the waiting times for nhs which my gp hasn't put in my letter so going back to ask receptionist to tweek it- if they will I don't know? My healthcare does cover some infertility problems such as PCOS, endometriosis, ovulation problems so I'm hoping they will take it. You never know though? Lots of loop holes im sure

PontyGirl · 13/04/2015 12:52

drew don't think the worst! honestly our bodies are so complicated, it could be so many things, most of them nothing to worry about in the long run. don't scare yourself Thanks

PopcornPip · 13/04/2015 13:15

Time for a catch-up...
Thanks everyone for kind thoughts. Feeling a LOT better this morning. Onwards and upwards! Smile
Drew as Ponty says, try not to think the worst. Easier said than done I know. Sending you Flowers
gin good luck with the pill!!
rosebud sorry you're crampy but no AF. Must be so frustrating!

eskimolaura · 13/04/2015 13:52

Hi all,

Have been AWOL for a few days as we've been up to Scotland for a family wedding. Hope everyone is ok. Haven't had chance to read back properly yet, but will try and do it amidst my huge pile of marking. We are back tomorrow, so wading through it all v e r y s l o w l y !

Not much news from me. Had a blood test for rubella immunity this morning, which is a formality from the gynae clinic. Have about three days of Norethisterone to go and then I will await a withdrawal bleed. Oh, and hopefully DH will be taking in a sperm sample on Wednesday, so FX that will be ok.

Back to marking now I'm afraid; just thought I'd check in! x x x
