I have to telephone to arrange a HSG test tomorrow. Not quite sure what to expect when i have the test. Can anyone explain this procedure to me. Thanks.

I have had one i think, is it when ink is injected into your fallopian tubes to check for blockages?
If it is, im sorry to say that i found it quite painful and upsetting, but that was 7 years ago, things may be different. Ive heard from a few women recently that they were offered pain relief, maybe the procedure has changed.

I had an internal scan, followed by a small tube with a balloon at the end inserted into my cervix, the balloon was inflated (this was the part i found painful) and ink injected into my tubes, followed by further scanning/pictures.
HPH, Good luck

Thanks Nixz. That is the test i think to check fallopian tubes. I feel quite sick now. I have to take medication before the test? but not sure why. I never think to ask questions with the consultant when i need to.

hi Chunkymunkey

I had one about 7 years ago now when trying to get pg for the first time.
I don't know the medical details of when goes on but if i remember correctly Nixz description is right.

I was told it would feel a bit like a bad period pain for a few seconds. Fortunately for me, I dont suffer with period pains so i dont know if the pain that I experienced was the same as or different from the average period pain.

I do remember some pain though (sorry, not what you want to hear) but the procedure was quick and the pain didn't last.

I was advised to take a couple of Ibuprofen before it (am having mine next month).

Munz · 18/10/2006 20:45

hiya I had one done last year, and tbh after than and an MRI scan I told DH I didn't want any more tests done - only because I personally found it invasive, it wasn't painful, didn't hurt and it's quite odd to see your insides on a screen. just for me personally I hated the experience.

this is a link to a couple of other HSG threads I've posted on u might find helpful (quite old but you never know)

Nixz · 18/10/2006 20:46

I think you have to take antibiotics before hand as it is invasive.

nother thread

I was told neurfen b4 hand and the antibotics afterwards, didn't suffer any infections thank god, and thankfully it managed to give every thing a little flush out. we fell for the boy shortly after

CHUNKYMUNKEY · 18/10/2006 21:19

Thanks everyone for replies and for links to other threads, i shall have a read. Munz, hope you don't mind me asking but when you said "you fell for the boy afterwards" was this naturally or was it on clomid/other medication or treatment.

Chunkymunkey, I fell pregnant the month after the HSG and like Munz, I assumed it was because the HSG test had just given my tubes a bit of a clear out.
Good luck.

Munz · 18/10/2006 21:31

no what happened was the month of the test, I had a late pos but m/c shortlky afterwatrds, it was awful tbh, so we had the MRI scan the month after, which is when I decided we would stop trying as I'd had enough (even thou we'd only started prelimery fertility testing) then bobs ya uncle true as my little boy's upstairs sound o I fell PG again the very next month - althou I was unsure tbh how it all sat, althou I had the neg tests post m/c at what would have been 6 weeks, by my dates I was due on the 10th march with joey, the hospital put me at the 3rd march, but perviously the month b4 I was due on the 10th feb (around) now I know exact dates etc, and when the lad came out he had the dry skin to suggest he was late, but the jaundice to suggest early - either way the end result was the same

good luck, hope it all goes well for you and you to have a positive result quickly after.

Thanks Mckenzie. Thanks for explaining Munz. I have suspected Polycystic Ovaries but need to have all the tests done to make sure. I have one dd of 5 and i don't feel i have a problem with my tubes. But i do have irregular periods.

I had an HSG earlier this year. I read a lot about it, and decided in the end to not take any pain relief. The doctor warned me it might be unconfortable, but I told him that the ultimate goal of this was for me to have a baby, and I was sure that would be more painful, so if I couldn't get through this I was doing the wrong thing. He told me I had a very healthy attitude.

The doctor was great actually - explained the whole procedure before he started, showed me all the implements etc. I had a nurse sat by my head the whole time, and they turned the monitor screen so that I could watch what was going on - the nurse pointed out what bit was what

As it was, it was no more uncomfortable for me than a smear test. If you are worried though, take a couple of Ibuoprofen before you go in.

Good luck - I hope it all goes well for you!

I was advised to take Ibuprofen 2hrs beforehand.

I found it painful - but only for about a minute (probably less) and only during the procedure - no pain afterwards. I took 2 more ibuprofen after it just in case.

Altogether not a pleasant experience. Everyone in the test room (about 4 - 1 doc / 2 nurses and a.n.other) were quite clinical and not very reasuring.

Not something I'm in a hurry to repeat, but worth the outcome - i.e. "your tubes are clear"

They say relax as much as poss before, but unless you meditate I don't know how you'd manage that!! Good luck

Artoo of your HSG - I must have got the off shift!!!

Where did you have it done? Mine was at Barts.
