hi

i recently had a complicated mmc which resulted in me becoming anaemic, i was prescribed ferrous sulphate to bring my iron back up and am still taking these (had ERPC a month ago).

i was also prescribed when pregnant 5mg folic acid which i have started taking again now i am ttc.

i bought some conception vitamins to take too (i didnt do this last time and want to do everything right this time) howeber noticed that they have both folic acid and iron in. Now due to doing everything right i also wanted to make sure im not taking too much of anything so rang my gp yesterday for advice. the nurse has called me back today to discuss and has advised me not to take the conception vitamins.

what are your thoughts on this? im confused Confused i'm sure i read on here if you take too much folic acid you just pee the extra out but it seemed it was the folic acid she was most concerned about.

any help appreciated. thank you Thanks

Hi gingerbreadman and everyone,

I'm not sure about the answer to this, but also interested to know other people's views!

I am ttc #1 and taking prescribed 5mg folic acid due to my epilepsy. Conception and pregnancy vits all contan 400mcg folic acid. I don't want to take in too much, but I do want to make sure I get all the vitamins I need.

I think the answer is probably to take separate supplements for all the vitamins that are most important. It's not vital to take the specific pregnancy multivits, so I'd say take:

  • your iron pills
  • your 5mg folic acid pills
  • a vitamin c pill, ideally combined with zinc (quite easy to get hold of eg Boots do their own version)
  • a 10mcg vitamin D pill

These are the ones recommended by government guidance - see here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/vitamins-minerals-supplements-pregnant.aspx
