Polycystic Ovaries - help & reassurance desperately needed!

Hi all,

Hope everyone is well.

I was diagnosed this week with polycystic ovaries and am now feeling a bit lost and helpless. I have always had heavy, painful periods which have although been a little irregular, I'm pretty sure I have had them monthly since I was around 14 (I'm now 30). Maybe I've missed one or two due to stress.

After reading up on heavy, painful periods I went to the doctor who ran a set of blood tests which all came back normal (hormone levels, etc). That was a relief but then I had an ultrasound during which I was told by the sonographer that there was nothing 'untoward' there. It was therefore a surprise when my doctor looked at my results and told me my left ovary was enlarged and that it was probably polycystic ovaries.

My husband and I really want to start trying for a baby next year but I'm so scared about the possibly long road of disappointment ahead. I really am just desperate for some reassurance and success stories. I asked my doctor whether there was anything we could do but basically I was told to try for 6 months but if nothing happens to go back.

Sorry for the long message, I feel much better having a bit of a vent and sharing. Has anyone else had / have the same experience? Thank you so, so, so much and good luck to all who are currently trying xx

Like you, I had a scan & was told my ovaries were polycystic, but blood results came back normal. I was freaked out, but I've since conceived 3 times relatively quickly (longest has been 4 cycles trying), & my ovaries have since appeared on scans as "borderline polycystic" and not polycystic at all. So, from my experience, I would say that if your bloods are normal it might well not be a big issue for you, as it hasn't been for me.

Thank you so much, your reply has really helped me feel better. They give you all this information and all you see is the word infertility leaping out at you from the pages! It's just a bit of a shock but hopefully everything will be ok. My mum suspects she had them too and like you she had three babies!

I'm now 47. I was diagnosed when I was 18, back in the dark ages. I was told I probably would have difficulty conceiving, and probably wouldn't be able to have children. So consequently, kids were never on my agenda.

Met DH and at 35 thought we'd give it a bash. Have an 8 yo and an 11 yo now.

That is really wonderful to hear Taffeta! Any glimmer of hope is definitely helping.

I have them and I conceived easily. (2 children) It is better to know about it because them you don't have to try for as long before getting help. (Without a diagnosis you might have to try for a year) . I went to a talk once at the Royal College of gynaecologists. Don't remember much about what was said but I do know that there might be a lot of women that have it but just don't know. You would only investigate these things if you had a problem iyswim.
