Agnus Castus - I think I have a problem ....

Oh dear. I have been taking agnus castus for about 3 months to regulate my cycle/lower my FSH etc. I am afraid I have been v silly and have self medicated this after reading it on the web

My problem is that my AF is now 6 days late which is v unusual for me. I breastfed DD until end June this year but my AFs returned in January this year - they pretty much went straight back to the 28-30 days. I have been feeling out of balance/not quite right so have recently been for a no. of blood tests and all showed OK - including hormones etc.

But now I am really worried I've caused myself some harm taking the AC. Is it possible it's this that has caused my AF not to show up this month?

We are not using contraception so I've taken a pregnancy test on Thurs (4 days late) and it was negative so I am not pregnant.

Felt really bloated earlier in the week but now that has gone and I really don't feel like AF is on it's way.

Pls help! I feel sooo silly for getting myself into this now (that is, if it's the AC to blame).

Don't know but my gut instinct tells me that you woin't have harmed yourself. This is homeopathic right? So dose is minuscule. And it ids sold over the ciounter. Bumping it for you.

liath · 07/10/2006 21:12

I don't think it would have harmed you, it's taken widely for PMS, I've taken it & it's never affected my cycle.

Thanks. Having done a bit more digging on the net I am worried I've caused a blip in my hormones IYSWIM as I can't say for sure but it does seem AC can stuff up a fairly normal cycle??

If it's not that, then any ideas what else it could be that's making me sooo late. I've never been this late, ever!

Hi Twohoots

Don't have an answer for you but will be watching with interest.

Have been charting temps for two months. Last month- no AC, short luteal phase (9 days).

This month- took AC up to ov. So far, LP is 15 days (have tested and BFN) and cycle in total is 50 days!! I didn't ov until day 35 but assumed this was because of stress caused by job interview on day 28.

If it is an effect of the AC, I doubt it has done any lasting harm but am intrigued by the idea it may have affected my cycle length.

Try not to worry, give it a miss next month and see what happens.

pendulum - I think it may be the AC with you too. I posted on another post about AC supposedly helping with lowering FSH and someone there warned me about using it. So that coupled with the late AF got me wondering. Were your AFs irregular before AC then? It does seem that it can screw with your cycle if you are fairly 'regular' anyway. Worrying stuff I think. Am sure reversible but maybe people should be warned of this.....

Hiya Hun

Guess who????

Still no sign?? am sure that if it is a AC causing problems they will be reversible if you stop taking it. Don't think the internet searching is a good idea, you'll scare yourself silly then the stress will delay things further!

Can't remeber, have you ever tried acupuncture?? don't laugh!!! may help bring you on.

Is DH home at the mo?? what does he think?

Love to DD
lots of love S + S x

I would not think that AC has itself done this, sometimes a person can have a later than usual cycle anyway. This in itself is nothing to worry about.

However, if you still wish to take AC it is best to seek advice from a medical herbalist. Natural does not always mean safe and this is quite a powerful herb to take.

rubyroo · 08/10/2006 13:34

Twohootsandapumpkin i took ac for the first time this month for the same reasons as you and it really helped i got bfp this month but had to wait till 16dpo for it. stress cause delays in ovualtion rather than af. what day of your cycle did you ovulate? it might still be too early to test or you may have ovulated late most people if not pregnant get af 14-16 days after ovualtion. hope that helps

Twohootsandapumpkin · 08/10/2006 20:18

Thanks AF has arrived this afternoon thank goodness! Ruby, I have read that if your cycle is fairly regular, AC can screw it up for a few months until it finds a 'balance'.

I stopped taking the AC yesterday and for me, I intend not to take again. I have had a lot of stress recently so it may have been down to that too!

Hi know this thread is over or so I think, but I started taking Agnus Castus in September after an incredibly painful AF to regulated hormones etc... I have since found out I am 4 weeks preg... my belief is that it did the trickx
