I finished my period on 13th October and on 18th October (Saturday) I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend. Since Monday I have had period-type pains-like a dull ache that is constantly there. I am REALLY bloated to the point where my jeans don't fit and I've been feeling sick on and off all week. I have gone dizzy a few times since and have been very tired. I'm a teacher and I was staying behind at a club where a lot of the children were eating pickled onion crisps... They're usually something I love but the smell made me feel really sick. I did a test because I could wait but of course it was negative because it is too early. Im driving myself mad wondering- is it possible to be getting these symptoms so early on? Or is there anything else it could be? Thanks :-)

I'm no expert because I'm yet to get pregnant myself but from what I've read (and I could be wrong) I don't think ovulation occurs that close to your period. Of course it really depends on how long/regular your cycle is...

It's difficult to say as we need more facts. If cycle day 1 was the start of your last period then what cycle day did you have sex? How long are your cycles in average? How old are you? On what cycle day did you test and get a negative result? Are your late for your period now, if not what cycle day are you on today?

It would have been cycle day 9 that I had sex, I'm on cycle day 18 now. My cycles are usually 28 days and I'm pretty regular. I'm 24. I tested yesterday and it was negative, so day 17.

Hi Zoe. Well we can assume you ovulated on cycle day 14 or thereabouts so you are only 4 days past ovulation right now. Generally you can't expect to see a positive on a pregnancy test until at the very earliest 10 days past ovulation. So no point testing again really until about 6 days time.

You were on the very edge of your fertile window when you had sex. You can get pregnant 5 days before ovulation, but statistically it is less likely than if you had sex two days before. BUT you are at peak fertility at your age so it is definitely a possibility.

Good luck, hope you get the result you want xx

Thanks for the advice, my partner and I would really like a baby and would be really happy if I test positive but there is still time if it is negative for now. I need to get to grips with my cycle etc! I have been having all these symptoms but I suppose it could be put down to something else. I am going to see a doctor this week to see what they say. Thanks xx

Zoe, best advice I can give if you are not actively trying but not preventing, is to watch your cervical mucus.

You will find that as you get closer to ovulation your cervical mucus will get clear and slippery like egg white, it will stretch lots between your fingers. That's an indication your body is gearing up to ovulation. Make sure you have sex on those days. If you don't get the slippery cervical mucus then I would be having sex every other day across the month, or start on about day 10 and have sex every other day till about day 16/17/18. You should catch the egg then even if you ovulate a bit late.

I think there is a thread in Conception for young women who are TTC. Might be worth joining that for tips xx

Thanks so much, I will keep a look out :) I do feel 'different' and have strange symptoms but suppose I will be very lucky to get a positive test this month. Onwards and upwards!
