Can somebody please help me understand these semen results?

Hi,

DH has had his semen analysis results this morning. I can see that they're not as good as they're supposed to be, but I don't know what it means in real terms.

Appearance - Hyperviscid
Volume - 4.5ml ('normal' = 1.5ml)
pH - 8.0 (should be 7.2 or above)
Sperm conc'n - 5.0 x10^6/ml (should be 15mil)
Motility - 26% (40%, of which 32% should be progressive)
Progressive - 12%
Nonprogressive - 14%
Immotile - 74%

Vitality & normal forms are both insufficient sample for testing.

This was after 3 days' abstinence. The GP as asked that we do another one after 5 / 6 days to compare, but that will probably take another couple of weeks to get an appointment to drop the sample off.

So obviously those things aren't great, but how unlikely is it to get pregnant with that? I am sure I have hormonal problems anyway (although blood tests and my ultrasound have seemed fine, but I know I'm not), but just the sperm alone...

no-one can really give you a likelihood of getting pregnant with those results because ultimately it only takes one sperm to make a baby.
Also there are a number of factors which can influence sperm count such as diet, alcohol consumption but even things like a long-hall trip which could influence your sperm count temporarily iyswim, which is why generally tests are done about three months apart.

Fwiw my xh had a much lower count than that, and although I didn't manage to fall pregnant after he'd been given that result, I do have a ds who was conceived during a month when the gp indicated that there might be an issue.

You would need to seek a referral to a specialist though who will be able to give you a more realistic prognosis...

No, I know... Sorry, I am just really feeling fed up with it all, and I guess I was hoping for anecdotal evidence either positive or negative, so I can feel a bit more in control of it. Silly, I know.

The GP wants another test with a longer abstinence period (which I can see the point of, and if it does give better results then that's great, but realistically we tend to have sex a lot more often than every 5 - or even 3 - days naturally, so the results will be pointless. Unless of course they're much better, in which case we will just have to work on our timing). After the next results, the GP is going to refer us on - in my name, I think, but with DH's results attached.
