Fertility tests

Hi, this is my first post. Apologies if the answer already exists somewhere, I have tried looking both on Google and the talk section of MumsNet but I can't find an answer.

My fiancé and I went to the GP yesterday to ask for fertility tests. GP was very nice and explained the different tests we'd need to do first, after which she'd refer us to a fertility specialist if necessary. She said that it would take a while for her to prepare the forms for the tests and we should pick them up today.

Today I've got the forms and sample jars. The blood test form says I need to get the test done on day 2 - 7 of my cycle. The urine test form doesn't have a suggested time to take. I'm sure she said that I need to give the urine sample on day 21 (or the following Monday if day 21 fell on a weekend). As she hasn't mentioned the day on the form, I'm doubting myself. Should I give the urine sample on a specific day in my cycle? I also need to have a smear test, is there a specific time to get this done?

The blood test is for Day 3 FSH, LH, oestradiol, so the female sex hormones.

The urine test is, I'd guess, for chlamydia. It won't be because she thinks you have it, but it is very standard to exclude STDs prior to referral. It can be done at any point.

A smear test is probably best done mid-cycle.

The NICE guidance is a bit wordy but might be worth having a read through at some point so you can see what the GP and, if you are referred, the fertility specialist are doing and why:

I have been through these tests and can help. There are two blood tests that are done: one on day 3 for FSH/ LH and one on Day 21, or whatever day is 7 day BEFORE the last day of your cycle (so this would be day 23 if you have a 30 day cycle). This day 21 test is looking for progesterone, which is at its highest 7 days before you start your period and is a good indication of whether or not you have ovulated and if you have, the "strength" or "quality" or that ovulation.

It sounds like you are mixing the urine test up with the Day 21 blood tests? I agree the urine is likely a catch-all test for STDs and/ or general health.

Smear test is OK any time (outside your period preferably). Some used to say they were nervous to do it after ovulation, in case they had conceived, but I don't think there is anything in NHS guidelines to suggest there is an issue here.
