Drinking and ovulation . . .

Hello everybody!

I’m a mother of a 15month old came off the pill three months ago to TTC number 2. My Fiancé is currently working abroad Mon – Fri so been unsuccessful so far due to him being out of the country at the fertile point of my cycle (men, eh?!)

Anyway, I’m incredibly stressed with house moves, being on my own, working full time etc etc (and knowing that we’ll miss the boat about this month so no chance of pregnancy) I have shamefully been relying on a bottle of wine frequently during the week to get me through. I always have a 28 day cycle and I always ovulate on day 14. I’m now on Day 16 and nothing – all OPKs have been completely blank and my temp is still down. I’m worried my drinking has stopped me ovulating and I’m worried I’ve done permanent damage – does anybody have any experience? Blush

Oh no - I feel really bad now that it's obviously just me that's drunk to such excess! Blush

i would probably say its more down to stress than the wine to be honest hun x

Mitchey · 07/08/2014 13:33

Do you think? I'm under ALOT of stress but I find it hard to believe that it can stop you ovulating?!?! I'd love you to be right though lol xx

And to add, I was getting very definite EWCM until yesterday . . . and then - NOTHING!

I agree with Bessie. I have drunk more Wine than I probably should some months and have ovulated. Last year was really stressful (wedding and house move within a few months) and twice AF was around 2 weeks late (which means that ov must have been late). Also my GP said that the average woman doesn't ovulate around twice a year.

Mitchey · 07/08/2014 14:26

Thanks Aprilray that's really very reassuring.

I fell pregnant with my first child on my first cycle so I've not got a good overall view of my how my cycles are (just the last few months) so that's very interesting. I'm also nearly 41 so I think I'm inclined to panic at the first sign of not ovulating! Blush

Mitchey Stress can for sure stop you ovulating, it's highlighted in lots of fertility books. Your body reads your stress and decides now is not a good time to ovulate.

Try and relax if you can, or just wait until you are less busy. xx

Thanks ladies!

Well fingers crossed its temporary (sounds like it is) and anyway if I did get pregnant this month (or even next) I don't think I could cope with the ensuing tiredness that brings with it on top of everything! Once I've given up work, moved to a different country and got married I might be in a better position ;) xx

Mitchey apparently many women only actually ovulate every second month (apparently we have a favourite ovary, it's only into the upper end of the 30s that both start firing regularly in desperation, hence the higher incidence of twins), and combined with your high stress levels I think that it is quite possible that you didn't ovulate, but in the same breath I don't think it is ANYTHING to worry about at all. Also it can be quite difficult to catch your 12 hour window of ovulation, everyone's hormone levels peak at different times of the day (averages are averages, not rules). Try to not worry too much, enjoy the wine this month, and if you're really worried just abstain next month when your DH is around and things actually have a chance of happening. :)

i like what freshstart4us has said. should be able to "like" comments on here. very informative too x

freshstart4us · 07/08/2014 17:41

bessie is that just because it involves enjoying wine? ;)

bessie84 · 07/08/2014 19:32

hahaha - cough cough, maybe hehe. no really, the info i found interesting. :) x

Mitchey · 08/08/2014 10:27

freshstartforus Wow - thanks for that info, really interesting!

Well, I did ANOTHER OPK this AM and at there's two lines there now so I may well be gearing up for a late ovulation, which I feel better about as well :) xx

Saga continues - loads more EWCM over the weekend and horrendous ovulation cramps yesterday and a temp inncrease that morning . . . then emp way back down again today. Failed ovulation again, getting a bit boring now, lol x
