I just got a positive preg test, I'm 38 - freaking out a bit!

This is our first TTC.... left it a bit late so expected it to take ages! I'm 38, other half is 50.

Anyway been trying for a couple of months, only properly really this month (I bothered to use an OPK).

Anyway am on 17DPO today and period is 2 days late... tried a OPK earlier which came back positive which weirded me out (I read they can pick up HPG) so went to get a preg test. Just tried it, positive. Very weirded out! Really quite shocked. No real symptoms, maybe slightly tender boobs.

Anyway how long should I leave it before I get a proper doctors blood test? Plus how long is the miscarriage risk period.... 10 weeks? What should I read!! Mild panic

I went to my doctor after a positive pregnancy test and was told that home pregnancy tests are so accurate that there was no need for a further test to confirm. Told to make an appointment with the midwife. The risk of miscarriage period is usually up to 12 weeks as far as I remember. I read 'what to expect when you are expecting' and logged on to the Babycentre website for further info.

You may not get morning sickness just yet (or even not at all) but by week six (two weeks after the positive test) I was feeling nauseous.

I now have a five year old and was almost 38 when I had him.

You read so much about post 35 being a real no-no for TTC for first baby but I'd really not felt ready up until this point.

Also take folic acid or pregnancy vitamins

Congratulations on your BFP.
Doctors won't test you again as store tests are just as effective. Definitely start if you haven't already taking pre natal vitamins.
Best advice rest and relax while you can and remember everyone is different some ppl gets lots of symptoms and some ppl get none.

Congratulations!! It feels strange when you have been thinking and planning and debating the possibilities of getting pregnant and then all of a sudden you just are... However this is really good news right?

I live in London where it is really very hard to get on the property ladder and as many people wait until they have their own home before starting a family a lot of my friends will be starting in the next year or so (which will make them about 38 too.)

Most people will wait until they have the first scan before announcing anything to friends and family, just in case.

I had my dd at 39 and I was not the oldest mum at baby groups btw.

It is good news, certainly! :) Its just scary too. I am excited - though don't feel grown up enough to be a mum even at 38! But I guess I'll learn as I go along. Need a few days to get my head around it.

Yes I'm in London too and we only got a three bed house when I was 36 and husband was 48! So yes it takes longer to get the space you need.

Not sure how to get round the whole 'keeping it secret' for the next few weeks especially when it comes to the not drinking, but time to be sneaky I think...

I have just had my first baby at 38 (I didn't plan it that way - ttc took years for us). I had a pretty easy pregnancy compared to many. Things went a bit wrong at the end (there was a problem with my placenta - not sure what yet, we're waiting for the results) and she wasn't growing properly and so was delivered at 34 weeks, but that is not related to age, it's just one of those things. I felt fine throughout and had no problems with SPD, heartburn, reflux, and so on that so many suffer. I hope you have a good pregnancy!

If it is going to happen, most miscarriages occur before 12 weeks. The risks do go up with age, but you still stand far more chance of having a successful pregnancy than not at 38. I miscarried at 37 and had a successful pregnancy at 38. There is no reason to think that your pregnancy won't result in a baby. :)

Congratulations - as you are in London you probably want to call your surgery fairly early on to make an appointment with either Gp or midwife (different places have different processes) to ensure you get your first choice of hospital. With DC1 I saw Gp at 7 weeks and was told I was v lucky to get into Kingston as I'd left it 'so late'. Madness.

Oh and ask bar staff to fill a glass with the same amount of lemonade or orange juice as they would if it had vodka in it if you don't want to arouse suspicion. I also did a lot of 'holding' glasses of wine and then swapping with DH.
