Help with temping please

Does anyone know from experience just how crucial it is to take your temperature exactly on waking after a minimum of 3 or is it 4 hours of sleep. I already have 2 ds of 3 and 5 who always manage to get me up to them in the early hours usually 1 or 2 hours before I would usually wake up. I generally get back to sleep but does it mean I'm not getting the right temp when I do wake? I've been ttc since Jan but am new to charting temp. Any advice gratefully received as I'm worried I'm wasting my time!

I think you are supposed to have 3 continual hours of sleep.

Trace2 is the temping expert round here.
She's on her hols at the mo but should be back in a week or so.

If you don't have any replies by then I would bump this thread up to see if she's back.
There is a temping thread as well knocking around...I'll see if I can find it for you....it may be useful and there may well be others on there who know all about it.

Hi Maddy - i don't know that much about temping- only just started myself but i read that it should be after at least 3 hours of sleep- like Coggy has said .

SOME INFO I HAVE JUST READ:

Say you normally take your temp at 7 am but have to get up early for whatever reason- say for your kids at 5am- then take the temp b4 you get out of bed at 5am. Keep a note that this temp was at 5am and also you can adjust the temp-keeping a note of this -the rule is:

Add one tenth of a degree for every half hour you take it late and take off one tenth of a degree for every half hour you take it early.

So if you normally temp at 7am and one morning you take it at 5 am you would need to take off 0.4 degrees from the reading.Just keep thorough notes of time diffs and temp adjustments.

Loads of info if you google temps and trying to conceive etc

I'm sure there are loads of people who have been temping for donkeys who will come along......

I can't find the thread - I guess it hasn't been used for a while...but as Andi said (we are our own little fan club here eh??!!! ) it'll be worth googling it until someone who knows comes along.

A temp tread for you

maddymax · 15/09/2006 14:17

Coggy, Andi and Babymad, thanks loads for your help. It all sounds much more of a precise science than I first thought. Never mind I'm still going to try and stick with it. I suppose I could always kick DH out of bed to see to DS I'm sure it would do him good! Thanks again. xx

Maddymax, as the others said, if I were you, I would take your temp when you get up for DS and note the time and adjust if necessary, I find that if I get up between 5.30 - 9.30, my temps don't change at all but that's just me! Good luck with it!

Try this software, 15 day free trial.
www.ovusoft.com/fam

Put in your temp and the time you took it and the programme automaticcaly adjusts your temp.
It's part of the Toni Weschler TCOYF book/system.

I was confused because I wake at different times (3 children, 6, 5 and 2)and wasn't sure how to adjust it.

This free software is great. I will probably subscribe after my free 15 days as it's easier than doing the chart myself.

Excuse my poor spelling/typing.

maddymax · 18/09/2006 21:00

3cat, thanks for the suggestion. I have got the Weschler book but have never tried the software. Might give it a trial as it sounds a lot simpler than trying to adjust myself. I'm only in my first month of temp charting but have just recorded a temp shift so hopefully I have actually ovulated (was concerned I might not be). Should be more on the ball next month and might finally BD on the right day!
