Coil removal so we can ttc...some questions!

Hi! Looking for some advice...taking the plunge and plan to get coil removed after 2 years so that we can ttc our first! Have some questions for those of you who have been through this already. 1. Will it hurt?! (low pain threshhold!) 2. Can we start ttc straight away or is it best to wait a bit? 3. How quickly do you return to normal cycles? (I went from 5 days bleeding to 14 after insertion - hoping this will decrease again!).

my answers are for the non hormone coil:

it hurts a bit - take some ibuprofen before you go, try to relax your fanny (!) and not think about it while they're down there
you'll be fertile straight away. in fact, if you've had sex in the last couple of days, in theory you could have sperm hanging around inside you that could cause you to conceive!
my cycles never really changed, so not sure on this one.

Might sound silly but do you think it is ok to try straight away? a bit worried it might have do some damage on the way out..

it doesnt hurt coming out in my experience. I barely felt it come out, although it hurt going in

I had the non-hormonal coil. I had it taken out because I bled for three out of four weeks. It didn't hurt when it was removed. At that point we decided we quite liked the idea of another child. I didn't have another period, as I was pregnant on the first month.

I've just had the mirena coil removed to ttc.

It didn't hurt.

Two days later I had a bleed. Now waiting to be able to poas. Hoping to fall asap.

I was like jeee. Coil came out, didn't have another period till baby came out.

I don't remember it hurting coming out but do remember the pain of it going in!

Yes, it was the pain going in that has me worried about it coming out! Was a bit unprepared for that! Dr said if I found that painful, I should give childbirth a go....so now I am a little terrified :)

Much less painful coming out than going in (the coil, not baby obviously ;-) )

I had my mirena removed last Friday and had a smear at the same appointment, I'm a sucker for punishment - it was slightly painful for a couple of minutes but to be honest, the smear was more painful. Then my partner was on nights all weekend, only managed one session Monday and then my period started but prior to trying 4 a baby I always had my coil out every 18 months or so to have a period to make sure it was all in working order!!!!! So I knew what to expect pain wise!!!! I am desperate for this period to stop so we can start trying properly, I'm hoping for a little bundle of joy ASAP!!!!!! The time is right for us xxxxxx

Hi I had mine out last month. I had previously had one get stuck so was terrified of having it out. Was no problem at all, just took seconds and it was done, no pain after. Apparently it's really really unusual to have any issue taking it out. Now in first ever 2 week wait and starting to think someone has stopped the clock, seriously it must have been 2 weeks by now(nope 3 days!)

I had mine out (Mirena) June 2012 to TTC#1. It didn't hurt nearly as much coming out as going in! The nurse advised us to wait 1 cycle before trying so we could date the pregnant easily. We didn't follow that advice and started trying...fell pg first cycle! But, had some complications which ended in miscarriage. It was a nightmare not knowing how pregnant I was at the time! With hindsight I think it would have been good to have had 1 cycle for dating but also so my body had a 'reset'. I don't know if the mc was related but you never know. Anyhow, it all ended getting pg with DS 4 months later. Good luck!

Hi i had my coil out march after having it in for 3 years after endometriosis surgery. We have been trying to get pregnant and havent fallen pregnant yet we dont make a big thing about trying. We have a regular sex life and live fairly stress free with his two chilsren. Can someone givw me some help on what to do im 21 have had endomemtriosis and have been told i have an inflammed cervix. What should i do. Cheers for the help

Just like you, Treesandbees - had my (copper) coil out on May 2nd, ovulated 9th and discovered I was pregnant when af didn't show up that cycle. Fast work! However, MCd on June 2nd. I was five weeks along and had only found out a few days prior so hadn't had much time to come to terms with it. I did a fair bit of googling in the weeks after and discovered a school of thought along the lines of the uterine lining not having had time to thicken after the coil comes out, thus leading to miscarriage as the fertilised egg has no squishiness to bed into. But there was nothing medically proven going around.

nyctoedi - it didn't so much hurt as was a tad uncomfortable. Nurse made me cough as she pulled it out - less than two seconds and it was over.
Have since had one full cycle and now in the tww. Good luck to you!

Hi, I have the mirena coil for 5 years before conceiving my daughter who is nearly 3 yrs old. It didn't hurt when it was taken out and took me 8 months to get pregnant. However I did have a test at 7 months for my AMH levels and they were found to be low but at the time of having the results told to me over the phone unbeknown to me I was already 3/4 weeks pregnant :-)
I've just had my coil removed again( last week) ttc no.2 , again it didn't t hurt and was over quickly. I haven't had any period yet....
Re fertility as far as I am aware it returns straight away.
Re cycles, if I remember correctly I went back to my 28-35 day cycles within a few months I think. As I said at the mo I haven't had a period yet but am already ttc.

It's somewhat lost in the mists of time here, but I'm sure I had my antique copper coils removed during the last couple of days of a period (a) to make sure I wasn't pregnant and (b) because the cervix is slightly dilated at that time.
I had the last one removed just before Xmas 2000, dd born November 2001. I had my first one fitted in 1987. Yes, they had been invented then!
