Cycles/luteal phase suddenly a lot shorter?

So, my cycle has always been on the long side - around 32-38 days (I have PCOS so all a bit irregular).

Last month we started TTCing DC2. It didn't work and last month, my cycle was just 26 days Confused. Then again, this month, unsuccessful TTC and AF has turned up after only 27 days.

Before now, I have never had a less than a 31 day cycle except when on the Pill. Is there any reason the sudden short cycles might have happened?

And is there likely to be any effect on fertility? When TTCing DC1 I used OPKs and tended to get a positive on about day 20 or even later. Haven't tried OPKs yet this time round but if I am still ovulating past day 20, then AF at day 26/27 would give me a too-short luteal phase wouldn't it?

I know it's only month two of TTCing and there will probably be some people who tell me I should just relax! not in my nature sadly!

Thanks for replaying Hopeful. I was on the Pill from December last year to about Feb this year - so I guess I've recently come off birth control - however I did have "normal" (ie 31+ days) cycles before then and in March and April. It's just May and June which have been odd.

Guess I'll get out the OPKs again!

Hi minipie,

Have you started any ttc vitamins?

They can alter the length of your luteal phase sometimes.

Thanks Mrs. I'm taking folic acid and vit D - but been taking those since about February I think. Does it take a while for them to have effect?

Thanks and congratulations hopeful! Ok, I guess I should just write it down to fairly recently coming off the Pill and start doing OPKs. (With a non sleeping toddler the sex-every-other-day route is not an option!)

PS you're right, my luteal phase was always 14/15 days when I was doing OPKs last time round, even though cycle length varied quite a bit. So I guess it's more likely that my ovulation has just got earlier.

How old are you now? I think maybe cycles get shortwr as you get older as there are fewer eggs to select from.
Also could your pcos have got a bit better so you ate ovulating earlier?

minipie · 26/06/2014 10:04

I'm 34 - but I had longer cycles last autumn and again in Feb/March so this is a pretty sudden change rather than

I guess PCOS can vary so yes it might have got better, though no obvious reason for it to have done (I haven't lost weight, my BMI's always been normal) and skin is still dreadful

Anyway I have got myself some OPKs so that'll give me a better idea of what's going on, hopefully.
