Hypothyroidism and Conception

My DH and I would like to concieve (would be our first) but I have not had a menstration in several months (since coming off the pill almost a year ago I have had an irregular menstration and many negative pregnancy tests). Recently I had my thyroid checked (I had several other symptoms) and have been put on medication for an under-active thyroid.

I would just like to know if any other women who have had thyroid problems concieved after being treated for the underlying problem - and if so, how long after startin treatment did their menstral cycles regularise and how long did it take to concieve?

I know there are no guarantees, but at the moment even anicdotes would give me a little bit to hope for.

I should probably add that I'm (almost) 21, he's 38. Neither of us smoke, or drink reguarly we are both a bit overweight and have been advised by our doctor to loose weight to increase fertility. I hope this will be more achievable with the thyroid function sorted out.

We've been keeping the possibility open for six-eight months but want to start a family soon. Other than lack of periods and BFPs we had no particular reason to think that we would have a problem concieving (but obviously not going to happen if I'm not ovulating!).

Thanks,
Pamela

Hi I was diagnosed with an over active thyroid when i was 17. Had treatment in the form of Radioactive iodine. Then a few years later it went the other way & i now have an under active gland which is controlled with thoroxine. I had no problems conceiving my dd although you do have to have regular blood tests during pg as this can effect the balance. I would think that as soon as they work out the dosage you require to balance your thyroid it shouldn't be a problem.

Good Luck

Once my thyroid levels were sorted out (underactive since 16) I had no problems conceiving.

Hi Spirited, your weight issues may have a lot to do with your thyroid. Once your levels get back up to normal it should be much easier to lose weight. I was diagnosed at 28. Didn't ttc until age 37 but was successful on second cycle. Tried again at age 41 and second cycle this time as well.

Good luck!

Hi my sil (40) found out she had under-active thyroid while trying to conceive nr2. They put her on tablets and she conceived on 3rd cycle.
