Subject says it all really.
I'm 33, have type 2 Diabetes coz of my weight (currently approx 19 st). Have one DD who is 8mths, was on Insulin from soon as I found out I was pregnant (was a stone heavier then, and over 23st by the time I had her). Have attended pre-conception clinic this time round to try and get blood sugar stable before starting to try.
Would be good to get to know others in a similar boat.

Hi BBWBabeLisa
I am also Type 2 diabetic and planning for baby 2 next year. I spent 4 years TTC and finally discovered I was diabetic after a m/c. Now have a 18 month old DD. My blood sugars have been quite stable (my HBA1C is around 6%) altho my cholesterol is high and I'm currently taking statins to reduce it. Can't TTC until I come off the statins which will be around christmas time. How have things been since your original post in August?

Hi Snowglobe!
Have had my parents visiting for the last week so not been online much, so just seen your reply! Was beginning to think I was the only diabetic in the world TTC! DH has been away for work for the last month so TTC on hold til he comes back around xmas. Sugars well controlled, last HBA1C was 5.7, and have been given the go-ahead by the clinic to start TTC. My cholesterol is high too, but my GP says she'll look at putting me on statins once baby no.2 is here (i'll be stopping at 2). I couldn't take the statins previously as I had gall-stones which put me in hospital every time I tried to take them. Had gall bladder removed in July so hopefully I'll be able to take them in future.

What meds are you on for the diabetes? Are you being referred to a pre-conception clinic or just being supervised by your GP when you start TTC? What part of the country are you in? We're in North Hampshire.

I'm now on Metformin 2gm daily plus 14units of slow release insulin at bedtime, but seeing pre-conception clinic on Wednesday and I think they may ammend that as since I went back on the insulin I've been putting on more weight (now back to 20st2lb same as when I conceived DD). Last time I saw the consultant he said I could go up to 3gm Metformin before considering Insulin, but I had a lot of side-effects on 2gm so my nurse wasn't happy about increasing it. The side-effects have gone now, so I suspect they'll have me try 3gm and no insulin.

Please keep in touch!
Lis x

Lis, I am so so so so sorry! I did check after I originally posted and didn't see a reply. Then (you are not gonna believe this but its really true) I lost my broadband connection towards the end of Nov. We had some trouble with Sky broadband and by the time it all got sorted out it was mid-Jan before we were reconnected with BT. Also I have just returned from a 3 week holiday to the Far East to visit family over the chinese new year period. Again, sorry for not coming back to you sooner. Hope you still check this thread....

OK..my meds history. As I was diagnosed as diabetic after a m/c I elected to start straightaway on insulin as I wanted to have a baby asap. Initially they put me on Mixtard but I found it didn't work for me as I found it hard to control my blood sugars. Then we moved to a combo of NovoRapid and Lantus. I've been on this ever since and my control has been good. It is a hassle to inject 4 times a day but does allow me to "play around" with my dosages depending on what I am eating. Anyway on this combo I managed to get my HBA1C down to less than 7% within 3 months (m/c in Jan, started meds in March) and got the green light to TTC (in June). Conceived in Sept and had DD the following June. Now been TTC'ing since Jan and hoping for baby 2 to appear soon.

With regards to clinics and stuff, I do attend a diabetes clinic but mainly for annual checkups etc. At my GP surgery, one of the GPs has an interest in diabetes and even helps out at the diabetes clinic so I usually go and see him (or telephone him) if I have any queries. But I didn't have any special preconception care, just got my HBA1C down to accepted levels for TTC and then I was on my own. After becoming pg, I was referred to my local hospital which ran a diabetes pregnancy clinic every 2 weeks. So during my entire pgcy I was seen every 2 weeks and in addition to the usual 2 scans at 12 and 21 weeks, I had growth scans at 28, 30, 32, 34, 36 and 38 weeks. I was induced at 38 weeks on the recommendation of my obstetrician even though growth scan showed baby to be around 6lbs. In fact she turned out to be just 6lbs 1oz. Birth was a bit of a nightmare, all fine but not how I'd imagined or intended. Had 2 IVs, 2 belts around bump to monitor heartbeat and basically unable to move from bed (NOT what I was previously told!)

Oh, and I live in Surrey.
