Sorry if this mesage is a repeat of anything earlier but am new to mumsnet. I'm a bit confused about ovulation dates when you come off the pill. I heard that after coming off the pill you would ovulate within a few days of not taking it (i.e. at the date you were to start back after the last withdrawal bleed). This would be day 7/8. Is this true, or is it not the usual 10-14 days?

when you come off the pill your body will release its egg then your period will come then you will start your proper cycle ovulating around day 14 (if your cycle is 28 day one).you could always finish the pill pack up to the break then stop that wouldnt mess up yourcycle.

Thanks. I came off the pill on the 6th Aug had a withdrawal bleed on the 9th, was due to go back on the pill on the 13th and didn't and have felt like my period is about to come ever since but hasn't.....just wondering when I should expect it or could I even have conceived!

hi crazybird,
I am in the same boat as you I had my last pill on the 29th june had my pill bleed on the 3rd july and have had nothing since!!. to be honest the past few days I have been feeling quite crampy and on and off I have had some sharp shooting pains which I never had when I was on the pill so I dont know what that is.
I have heard that it can take up to 6 months for periods to return to normal or even return, but apparently it is also still possible to concieve without having a bleed.
I tested the last time my period was due and it was bfn I am due on again on 3rd sept so if af hasnt arrived I shall test again.
I have decided that it may be best to just test on the days that my af should have started but if I havent had one by nov I will go and see my doc.
sorry for the huge post!!
let me know how you get on

Ovulation is not an exact science and women can ovulate earlier, later or not at all in any given cycle. Ovulation does not therefore always occur on day 14!.

You can have periods without ovulating.

Ovulation is more likely to happen if the menstrual cycle is regular, less so if it is not.

The pill leaves your system very quickly after taking the last one so it is not correct to assume it can take a few months for things to get back to normal.

There is no evidence to suggest that the pill is responsible for failure to ovulate; what it can do however, is mask the symptoms of any underlying hormonal problems.

Tili - I would get a blood test done in your case to see what your hormone levels are like with particular attention being paid to your LH and FSH levels (these must be comapred). Hormonal imbalances can cause periods to go haywire (in this regard a condition called polycystic ovaries is a common culprit). It can be treated.

i would just be patient and see what happens worrying can also delay periods.

Ladies, I just wanted to say that I took my last pill on 17th June after 18 years on it. I got my withdrawal bleed a couple of days later (as usual). First cycle after that was 27 days long. I was not charting then as I have been for the last two so I don't know if I ovulated, when etc but I do know that in the first cycle of charting, I ov on CD16 of a 27 day cycle and this cycle I think it will be today, CD18. I would highly recommend charting especially if you want to be sure that certain things are happening at certain times. Best of luck.

Hello.
Hi Attilathemeerkat. Thanks for the advice.I dont think I have anything majorly wrong as I concieved dd the 1st month after my pill bleed last time. So unless something has happened in the last 4 years I think I should be ok. It was my doc who told me when I went to see her to tell her I wanted to stop the pill to ttc.that I would either fall straight away or It may take a while for my periods to start and maintain a regular cycle.
so I guess its just a case of wait and see!

MrsMcJnr · 29/08/2006 09:45

Hi Tili, I've heard that too - apparently, the remains of the pill are not affecting your body as such but a part of your brain (not very scientific, sorry!) can still beleive that you have the hormones and therefore you might not get the signals you need to function the way you did before you went on it for a while but some lucky people do fall very quickly after coming off it.

Tili · 29/08/2006 09:53

Hi mrsmcjnr.
I am soooooooooo ready to have af!!
I have felt a bit crappy this past week having dull aches on and off, and now and again I have had sharp shooting pains in my groin that have been really painful ive never had them before. When it first happened I thought I had pulled something but when it happened again I thought "oooh this is new!!"
Im thinking I really need af to feel normal again but Im going to test on sun but if its a bfn and im still getting pains going to try and see the doc.

MrsMcJnr · 29/08/2006 10:08

Do feel for you Tilli. Since coming off the pill I have felt crap quite alot, I forgot about that horrible feeling like you are going to be sick but know you won't that lasts for the whole day before your period and the mood swings - DH is scared of me!! Hope you feel better soon and that the pains are all for the right reasons.

crazybird · 29/08/2006 20:20

Best of luck too Tili!
Still feel like I'm about to get my period all the time but isn't coming. As I haven't had a proper bleed since coming off the pill (6th Aug)have no idea at all as to when I should test. Anyone any ideas?

Crazybird - if 6/8 was the date that you started AF after your last pack of pills, count that as CD1 which means that you are now on CD24. If it were me, I think I would wait until CD32 at least before testing just in case your cycle length's longer due to coming off the pill than it was before. What was your cycle length before you went on the pill? do you remember? It would also be worth noting your waking temperature and changes in CM (and CP but that is optional) so that you have more info about what you body is doing. Hope this helps!

crazybird · 09/09/2006 16:21

Since starting this thread I've still not had my period......well I've had spotting for the last few days but nothing like what would be a period. Have done two tests but both negative. Anyone else come off the pill and get what they thought was their period but just spotting and when did your 'real' periods return?

OP posts:
MrsMcJnr · 11/09/2006 10:12

Hi Crazybird - I don't want to raise your hopes just in case but the spotting could be implantation spotting and if it is, it'll be a few days yet before you would get a positive result. I got myself all excited on Friday because I had spotting on 9dpo and hoped that it was implantation but then AF arrived the next day . Do you know that Tili is pregnant?

crazybird · 11/09/2006 11:50

thanks mrsmcjnr

af started last night unfortunately. But thats great news for Tilli

alexsmum · 11/09/2006 11:56

just wanted to add, i didn't get a period for 13 months after coming off the pill.
then it was every three months and finally every month.
i remember going for a scan to check for polycystic ovaries and the sonographer saying 'the pill has a lot to answer for'

all my blood tests were normal and the scan was normal.

Tili · 12/09/2006 09:37

Hi Crazybird.
Sorry to hear that AF has arrived but at least you can have a clean start ttc iyswim.
I hope everything goes well for you.
I was lucky enough to get my BFP last week. The only thing is we have no idea how far I am due to my cycle going awol.So my first scan will give me my exact dates.
Anyway best of luck chick xx
