OPK help

Hi guys, just wonder if anyone can help.

I have started using opks for the last 2 cycles and i never get a positive - i barley get a line ever and only get a faint one near the time of ov but that's it. I do however gets twinges around this time and my periods have been reasonably same same - i'm on cycle 6 and they have been 27, 25, 32 (very much thought i was pregnant on this one boooo), 31, 26.

i have had cysts on my ovaries over the last few years but have always had scans and just before ttc went to the doc to ask about pcos and she said that there was nothing to show that. I do however get cyst twinges which are pretty similar so not sure if I have been making them up at ov twinges.

Not really sure what to do - how do I know if I am actually ov then? Do I go to the doctor or will they just tell me to go away untill it has been a year?

any help or advice would be great

Are you using the Internet ones? If so maybe try the clear blue ones....they are more expensive (£40 for 20 sticks) but so easy to use as it gives you smily faces when ovulating.....I used them and was glad I did as it showed I wasn't ovulating at all. It saved me many re months of ttc and being gutted when AF arrived.
Went to a ob/gyn specialist and he put me on clomid.

Sounds though as if you are ovulating....and if you are the clear blue ones will give you a more accurate result making it more likely to get preggers!

buddhabee · 06/05/2014 16:09

how did you know you weren't - i have no idea how you tell if you are or not?? other than the opks - may have to invest in the clear blue!

I used Internet cheapness first... And didn't get any dark lines which show when you're ovulating....thought they were maybe rubbish cos they were cheap so invested in the big guns and reasoned that only an idiot couldn't get pregnant with those and a smily face appears in the stick when you're close to ovulating and a big smily face when you are ovulating!

However I didn't get any smily faces :( went to the GP and he sent me for blood tests to check for ovulation and results suggested I wasn't....didn't want to wait another load of months for nhs referral so went privately to see a guy....fingers crossed these tablets will work!

However don't panic....you def sound like you are ovulating! Clearblues should def help narrowing down the day tho....which must change for you every month if your AF arrives on a different day every month!

Nothing straight forwards about this ttc malarkey!

buddhabee · 06/05/2014 16:20

when you say def sounds as though I am - what differs from when you did it - is it cos I get faint lines sometimes? I shall invest in clear blues next month thanks for the advice. We dtd pretty much every day for a week when my app says I'm ovulating (and I do get pains around that time) but just don't want to be kidding myself and then realise that I have wasted loads of time!

If you're using Internet cheapies, you need to be careful to follow the rules:

  • test early afternoon (2pm ish)
  • no liquid for 2 hours before you test

Quite a bit of research suggests dtd every other day maximises sperm quality and is enough for ttc

blondie138 · 06/05/2014 18:06

I didn't get any ovulation pain ever and only had periods which lasted less than 24 and were mainly just brown smudges (sorry if tmi)

If you're having regular periods you're more than likely ovulating...however if your period comes as late as day 32...that means you will have ovulated on day 18 so you might have stopped trying by then?

Get the sticks but if you're worried make an appt with your GP....but mine made it very clear that fertility won't look at at referral until you have been trying for a year (if under 35). Worth a visit though?

Ducky23 · 06/05/2014 18:21

I had the same thing, never actually got a positive and managed to get pregnant. My line was very faint but it was as I had a drink around an hour before testing, you are meant to avoid drinking if you can for around 2 hours, also how often were you testing? With the cheapies I think you are meant to test twice a day incase you have a short lh surge. Smile

sykadelic · 06/05/2014 18:34

Here's my blog on all this stuff: bumpytimesahead.blogspot.com/ (it's still new so please be kind!)

I've only been testing for 3 1/2 weeks now but you can see how the lines fluctuate and then are REALLY obvious when I ovulate.

I also have cysts on my ovaries (something I'll address later in this blog) so I'm use to the ache as well. It was interesting for me to feel an ache but not actually ovulate and then feel the ache (and bloating) again 2 weeks later and test positive for ovulation.

When are you testing?

MrsChristmasKate · 06/05/2014 19:30

so so glad I read this! I've been testing after drinking!

buddhabee · 07/05/2014 10:13

i am one of those people who always has a drink on me - so maybe that is the problem - have bought some clearblue ones so if af turns up this month (am tricking it as have spent £40 that hopefully out of spite i will get pregnant lol) i shall be using them next month. thanks for the help girls and i shall have a look at your blog - really interested to read anyone elses cyst stories - mine are pretty painful and have almost had to go to hospital a couple of times with the pain (husband insisted but cos i knew what they were i wouldn't let him)!
fingers crossed for all of us - am def thinking this ttc thing is magic and a mystical creature x

Hey Buddahbee, I had a cyst on my ovary that burst...only found out when i was taken to hospital in agony and got appendix removed....turns out the appendix got infected cos all the fluid from the burst cyst was just lying in my abdomen! I had an internal scan before i was put on climid, and there was another growing that he needs to 'keep an eye on'. He said it was about an inch in length, and that the one that burst would have been about 12 cms! Holy crap! I had no idea it was even there!

Good luck with clear blue - if i was you i'd pee everyday on stick starting from about day 10! Its the opposite from internet cheapies as you pee on them first thing in morn!

So blooming complicated! I'm taking last climid pill tonight so fingers crossed I ovulate soon too!x

buddhabee · 08/05/2014 15:29

Fingers crossed for you ovulating! I have had cysts for about 6 years and first time I passed out with the pain but by the time I got an appointment they had gone - apparently the pain is either them bursting or it's the follicles that they are on twisting! Nice lol! I had one that was 5cm but had disappeared next time I went for a scan so they just come and go some with pain some without but they said they are pretty common and mine should have no effect on me ttc (asked them every time I went).

Peeing in the morning will be much better as I obv consume too much liquid for the cheapies think I'd die if I didn't have a drink for 2 hours lol I'm dreadful always one in the my hand!

blondie138 · 08/05/2014 15:47

Me too!! I was terrible at it too...I'm like a fish guzzling water!

That's so odd about the cysts....i must have something like that too however the appendix time was the only time I had pain....thankfully! Poor you Confused

buddhabee · 09/05/2014 10:37

But on a good note one of my friends has them and she says the pain is pretty similar to child birth (ok she did have a particularly easy one lol) but still at least I have an idea of what is coming lol!!
Af due anywhere really between next wed and the weekend so have everything crossed!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting- I was going to start a thread about this. I have been using the internet cheapie opks. I have only ever got a very very faint line, although it was around the time I expected to be ovulating. I wondered if I might not be ovulating, but surely then I wouldn't even get a faint line? And I do seem to be getting the EWCM when I thought I was ovulating. So I need to be stricter about not drinking anything maybe

And if I had anovulatory cycles- would they still be regular? Cycles seem to be settling into a pattern of about 34 days, therefore I'm guessing I ovulate around cd 20.

AF due on monday/tuesday but I'm pretty sure this isn't my month. Will order some more expensive smiley face tests for next month.

blondie138 · 09/05/2014 11:37

Buddahbee youre in the two week wait! It's excruciating! Fingers crossed AF stays away!Wink

Cowbiscuit - my cycles were every 28 days but I wasn't ovulating....sounds like you are tho as I never had any ewcm. Hopefully the smily faces will sort you right out!
