Conception

When's the best time to get pregnant? Use our interactive ovulation calculator to work out when you're most fertile and most likely to conceive.

Ok slightly TMI questions. Only when we do try I want to get it right!

I have the classic stringy discharge on about day 11 or my cycle (I am right in thinking day 1 is 1st day of period). However this seems quite early to be ovulating. Is the discharge a sign you are about to ovulate?? Or that you are ovulating. We're thinking about trying in the next few months and after building myself up last month thinking I was i have 6 pregnancy tests from ebay to use!!!

do it every day. then you can't go wrong. stringy crap is a usual sign, but i was a "random ovulator"

elliott · 25/08/2006 21:22

It happens just before ovulation - and is the time you should go for it. The stringy discharge is needed for the sperm to be able to get through - and they need to be there when you ovulate - they live for 2 or 3 days so the trick is to get them there just before ovulation and not miss the boat (the egg only lives for 12-24 hours or so). so day 11 sounds about right....

ifirc-the discharge means you are actually ovulating but i could be wrong..day 1 is the first day of your period, that i do know!
basically if you get the discharge around day 11, its possible to be ovulating then, some women ovulate earlier, some later, try bding around that time and you should hit the jackpot

sweetkitty · 25/08/2006 21:26

With DD2 we did the deed on day 11 and I thought it was too early anyway I was wrong so go for it!

PS I bought those ebay tests, got a -ve on day AF was due, -ve the next day, -ve 3 days later but still had a feeling, got a Clearblue and it was +ve!!!

Best of luck to you x

Lovely thanks very much! In a few months time then it might come in very useful!

Well, I leant from MN that the egg white muccusy stuff happens when you are ovulating.

Mine always appeared around day 10-12 and last a few days.

However, I'm PG now after concieving on day 8 or 9 without any signs of the egg white.

So...I now have no idea when it's best to do it but needless to say I will not be having sex with DH ever again without a full deep sea driving dry suit thingy because it seems I can fall PG at any time

With regards to "doing it every day" BD every day can put stress on the couple particularly if one or the other does not feel like sex; the man in particular may feel like he is being used. Rigourous timing of intercourse is often a mistake and can do more harm than good. BD two or three times a week throughout the cycle is fine.

Ovulation is not an exact science and a person can ovulate earlier, later or not at all in any given cycle regardless of any "indicators".

ATM - Dp will think all his sundays have come at once at least for a couple of months. This is a main part of my bargaining tool for baby No2 - my sex drive does not meet his (rather high) one!!! But appreciate what you are saying over the long term and thank you!

What you have to remember is that sperm can survive in the womb for up to 7 days, so even if you haven't yet ovulated, if it is a few days before, there is a chance that the sperm will last long enough to fertilise that egg! Afterall, it only takes one lone sperm to do the job!

Tommy · 26/08/2006 22:47

Flossam - if you're anything like me though, all his Sundays may come at once while you're TTC but once you have, he can forget it!!!

Flossam · 27/08/2006 21:59

Shhh Tommy - don't tell him that !!
