So sorry Jodie. It is heartbreaking, we invest so much of ourselves into the IVF process and then suddenly crash back to earth. Give yourself time, as much as you need. Most of all, be kind to yourselves. Sending a hug.

So sorry Jodie. It is so heartbreaking and so bloody unfair :( I've had 5 BFN's and I'd like to say it gets easier but it still hurts. Hopefully you won't have to go through this heartbreak next time honey. Big hugs and as others have said, take care of yourself and dh and be kind to yourselves, indulge in what makes you feel better and you'll grow stronger and will be able to give it another go xxx

Jodie I'm really sorry it was a BFN. I know how cruel it is as this is my second cycle. It's ok to feel devastated, give yourself some time and plenty of tlc x

I wasn't entitled to any NHS attempts so I had to go private from the start.

Is that because of your age Jodie? Can you go again? What do you think went wrong or was it just bad luck.

I'm 30 so it's not my age.

I'm gay and as we aren't in a civil partnership, we weren't entitled to IVF on the NHS.

I have no idea why it didn't work. It was a day 5 blastocyst, that she said was hatching. Does anyone know why it doesn't work sometimes?

Jodie, is that true? My god, straight couples don't have to be 'married' do they to get ivf on the nhs (I don't think) - that seems very unfair!

Your blastocyst sounds great. Sometimes it is just bad luck. Or embryo quality (not so in your case) Other times, it can be the uterus environment-possible problems with implantation, and I think sometimes they just don't know why, but subsequent ones can work. So don't give up yet

I can't believe you are not entitled to it on the nhs as you are not in a civil partnership. Do you know if a straight couple need to be married? If not I think you would definitely have grounds to challenge your CCG. The post code lottery really annoys me. I'm lucky as I get 3 cycles, my CCG actually funds for single people as well so they are quite forward thinking. I can't believe that if I lived 2 miles down the road I would get nothing.

How's your other half doing? Thinking of you both

I'm not sure if it does depend on where you live. I live in Hampshire. I know single people aren't funded here either.

I have got 4 embryos frozen as a result of this cycle, but I don't understand how they stand a chance of working as they were of a poorer quality than the blastocyst that was transferred.

Jodie try not to be disheartened as they have quite strict criteria for freezing. I had 3 embryos left after my first cycle but the embryologist wouldn't freeze them as they weren't good enough quality. So they must be good embryos. Ive known lots of women get BFPs on their frozen cycles and in fact a lot of clinics have slightly higher success rated with FET.

If you want to look into the nhs side you can contact your CCG and ask for a copy of their IVF policy. It might be worth checking it out as my GP kept saying I didn't meet the criteria and it was only after someone who lived near to me on here told me he was wrong that I found out I was entitled to it. That said you can at least focus on using your frosties first which will be a lot cheaper plus everyone says it's much easier than doing a fresh cycle.

I think it's normal to feel disheartened after a BFN. After my last cycle I kept saying I wasn't doing it all again. It was only after a month or so that I changed my mind.

I'm 32, DH is 41, been TTC since early 2011 - but not so much of a sniff of a BFP in all that time, so here we are doing our first round of IVF with a 'diagnosis' of unexplained infertility.

Its early hours of the morning here (am in the US) and rather than sleeping I'm up and obsessing on the internet and wondering if the drugs just aren't working for me, because after six days of stims I don't have any side effects at all and I can't feel my ovaries doing diddly squat. I do have bloods and ultrasound scheduled for later this morning though, so hopefully the clinic will be able to reassure me and make me marginally less deranged then.

to everyone who hasn't been lucky yet, I hope you all hit the baby jackpot in your next round.

Jodie. How are you today? I agree with cups that they only freeze good quality ones. They may have replaced better ones but that is just to give you the best chance of success as far as they can assume! To have 5/6 blastos still going and good enough to freeze is really good. I have had 7 cycles of ivf and only ever had 1 embryo to freeze!! On the cycle my DS was created, I didn't even get to blastocyst and had 2 'good' embryos, 1 6 cell and 1 8, with some fragmentation! The 6 cell was starting to compact, so reckon that was DS. But the signs weren't indicative of a successful cycle! You won't feel positive about it working again right now, quite understandably, but don't give up hun.

Suck, welcome aboard. Hope your scan goes well and shows that things ARE happening in there. Some people feel side effects and others don't tho, seems very individual! Come back and tell us later.

Fortunately my fear that nothing is growing in there was unfounded I guess I have just read so much about women having big jangly-dangly swollen ovaries on these drugs that not having any signs of anything happening was alarming. But I've got 11 strong follicles, all currently between 11 and 15 mm, as well as a bunch of tiny ones, so that is a relief.

Unfortunately the follicles aren't the only thing growing, they also found a bloody polyp in my lower uterus and made noises about maybe not doing fresh transfers after EC if it keeps growing and instead freezing any good embryos we get and giving me a good scrape out in there hopefully the bloody thing won't get any bigger though and I will be on for EC and ET next week sometime.

How is everyone else doing today?

I don't know if any one remembers me - I was cycling in November and was devastated after a BFN then got pregnant naturally and in January discovered it was my 3rd ectopic - so had my second tube out. Well.. It is OTD of my first FET and I just got a BFP!

I know there is a long way to go and I'm absolutely terrified but Ive been lurking and wanted to say to Jodie that some times - even with good embryos (blastocysts) and no other issues - it just doesn't work. But that doesn't mean an FET won't. As far as I understand they know very little about which embryos will go on to become babies so they select the best looking at the time they go back in - which gives a good indication but isn't a certainty.

It is shit getting a BFN - I was in tears last night because I didn't want to feel as bad as I did in November so just be kind to yourself.

Sucking that's a fab number of follies at a good size, fingers crossed that polyp doesn't get any bigger. How are you feeling? Any side effects from the drugs?

Jodie I never had enough embies to get to blast, but I on my 4 rounds, I made grade 1 embies on two rounds. They resulted in an mc and chem preg. This current preg is the result of a fairly ropey (fragmented) slow growing embie (they didn't give me a grade but started talking about moving to donor eggs on transfer day). There is so much they don't know about embryo quality. They can only pick the best looking embryo. They have no idea which are most likely to succeed.
