We are hoping to to add dc3 to our family soon, and I have bought some preconception vitamins, but I am overweight so do I need a higher dose of folic acid. I could ask my gp, but don't really want to waste their time if it's not needed, it seems a bit silly to take up an appointment to ask a question.

Hi Shinybaubles :)

NICE guidelines say if your BMI is over 30 5mg of folic acid is advisable cks.nice.org.uk/pre-conception-advice-and-management#!scenariorecommendation:2

I'm not sure if you can buy that dose over the counter though?

Good luck with ttc :)

Sorry, having one of those days. Obviously it depends on your BMI, so if you're just a little overweight then there's no need for the higher dose.
