Just wondered if anyone can shed any light on this...

We are ttc #1, on 3rd cycle. Around ovulation (used clearblue digital smiley face thing to tell) I had ovulation cramping. I've had this previously, it stabs and then dies after a day or so.

This time it started as a stabbing pain about 2 inches from right hip, lower pelvis, as normal. Then it sort of went away, however if I push down on the area it twinges a lot. The real killer is when DP and I dtd, if he goes in too deep it sends a shooting pain like a lightning bolt through the area. Rocks my world, but NOT in a good way! Makes me feel sick with pain! It's fine if we don't go too deep, though.

I don't have PCOS as far as I'm aware (just long cycles, between 35-39 days), so having consulted with dr google, I'm not convinced it's rupturing ovarian cysts.

I guess the thing is that I've NEVER experienced this before. Has anyone else?

I often find sex is uncomfortable around ovulation (great work mother nature!) and I've also had the shooting pains you describe! It certainly takes my breath away... and not in a good way! Mr Rpopz is pretty well endowed as well which doesnt help (in this situation lol). Just take it steady. I don't get it every month, hopefully you won't either.

OP, have you ever been examined for, or told you have, a retroverted cervix? It is also called anteverted uterus or tilted uterus.

Basically your womb is angled " the wrong way" so your cervix "points bumwards" iyswim, the opposite way to most women. Because the penis tends to hit it, it can cause pain during sex. Can also make smears harder.

I have this and have never had bother but pain during sex is a common symptom. Get checked by GP?

I should say that it may not have been mentioned if you have been examined before, as it is a fairly normal thing - about 1 in 10 women have it and it is within the range of normal anatomical structures, so people examining you may note it but not necessarily say anything, as it is not a problem in itself.

RevoltingPeasant never even heard of retroverted cervix! Never been mentioned by any healthcare people over the years but as you say they might not bother to say it.

RPopz it's weird eh? Comes from nowhere, seemingly. Never had anything like it til this month. Just another way for my body to mock me!

Although on a wider point, I'm finding it hard to like my body at the moment, it's got ONE JOB so far as I can see. I'm letting it off hiit super intensive workouts, quit caffeine and wine and feeding it shit like "quinoa" instead of Brie and the fucker is letting me down. Can see how that long term (failure in) ttc could really damage your self esteem generic anger

I get this pain quite a bit - certain positions like doggy just aren't possible for me and a nurse once commented after I had my mirena fitted that I would never be able to feel the strings due to the 'angle' of my cervix. icy I'm at the same point as you - ttc #1, cycle 3. Gave up all the good shit for 2 months, failed this month. Have eaten ALL the Brie and drunk ALL the wine this month. Quinoa just isn't worth it.

Yup icy, I'm with you there too. Cycle 7 and still not sprogged up, despite no caffeine/ sugar/ booze for at least 60% of that time.... Eating my five a day and everything!

Fancy well get it checked rather than listen to me as I am not a dr but yeah, I find doggy tough too.

Also.... Retro cervix (as I think of it) used to be associated with lower fertility, as the mechanics supposedly don't work as well iyswim

Have you had your appendix out OP?. Ive always had the symptoms you are experiencing I was told I have adhesions following the Operation. Just a thought.

Urgh stupid retro disco cervix, stupid body, stupid 38 day cycles. The only benefit from all this ttc-ing is my liver is getting a break! I'm on 8 dpo at the moment. If it's another sodding BFN I'm going to get DP to take me out for dinner to commiserate. You're right, fancyacupoftea*, fuck the quinoa!

haha ladies i had to laugh.. everything that is said i can agree with an understand. im TTC#1, cycle 3, i love pate, wine, coffee (havent given coffeeup yet!)... 2ww at the moment and yesterday I had half a bottle of champers due to wedding anniversary. sods law this will be the month due to my fuck it attitude to drinking.

icy during cycle 2 i had pains on right side just below belly button for about a week. hurt when i coughed and also just generally. killed during sex. was debating whether it was appendix and whether to go to doctors but it was usually just 5/10 on pain ratio (except during sex) ... but in the end it went away. no idea what it was from but i have never had that before.

once the lady doing my smear told me i have a great cervix HAHA! (i think she meant easy to access, maybe its just beautiful??) so i dont think i have the retro disco cervix but still had the pain last month.

Ha I had a colposcopy once and the nurse said I had a very pretty cervix!!?! Lol, I think she was just trying to make me feel better....

The pain seems to have gone now, it generally faded after about a week, but still twinges right up to yesterday. So strange.

I'm worried my retro disco cervix isn't pretty enough. Maybe that's why the sperms aren't interested?!

AF showed is morning. Was in the car (alone!) went to guff and felt it gush out. Sickening. Have had some tears, but my lovely OH brought me tea and hot water bottle. Buying prseed off amazon, and downloading fertility kindle books.

Chin up now, no more tears. Only 37 more days till BFP.

That was me last month icy... AF arrived and I was straight online buying opks and preseed! No more books though, they just tell me what I already know and its annoying! Chin up love, wallowing is totally allowed though (or so I tell myself every month) ....

no bfp yet, AF due on 32 day cycle this coming Thursday. doesn't mean I have POAS already being hopeful (silly!).

thamerin good luck with self control - I've banned myself buying them online as "then they're relatively cheap so can go wild". Unfortunately my walk to work takes me past Boots on regent street so end up buying full price spendy ones, which I promptly waste. More good luck with the result, of course!

Haha yes rpopz you're right, the books contain nothing you can't find online. Found myself reading Zita West, I know all the diet stuff, low GI, high alkaline, Mayr clinic principles. Skimmed through all of that. Which means the new info bits are basically "what Chinese element type are you, fire or metal", which is, erm, interesting in a kind of "this is how the ancient Egyptians did it, but let's face it they didn't have penicillin so..." kinda way. Looking at old Mumsnet threads has now convinced me all this ttc alternative stuff is being pedalled by charlatans who exploit women's desperation, frustration and fear.

The fact a good diet takes c. 3 months to take effect in your body is bloody depressing too.

I will not: research acupuncture, reflexology, reiki, google anything relating to what day of my cycle I'm on, hate my stupid body, spend 2 hrs of daily commute rinsing phone battery looking at fertility/baby websites.

I will: eat good foods, do decent but not crazy exercise, get lots of sleep, get up early and have relaxing breakfasts, see friends and laugh lots, read trashy fun novels on the train, find a new boxset for evenings and spend at least 15 mins a day in the garden enjoying the plants and flowers. This will get me through the next 36 days!

caffeine cold turkey sounds like hell. whats the deal with nescafe coffee is is really that bad when TTC? Even when i do eventually fall pregnant i never planned on stopping caffeine... is it really that detrimental to 1) fertility and 2) developing baby? surely i dont have to give up caffeine?!!!!!! aarrrrhgghhh

Some coffee is fine. I had a good old Google the other day, and it seems you can have up to the equivalent of 2 large cups of filter coffee. (which must be about 17 cups of Nescafe, honestly, piss of Satan). I have one mega coffee every morning from an Italian stovetop pot. It's probably about a quadruple espressso. I keep on telling myself that that's no more than 2 large filter coffees etc etc, but to be honest have no idea whatsoever....

Oh yeah, back to the original subject....DTD last week in the, er, "approved conception position", and it was really quite painful. It felt like my cervix was quite a bit lower than normal. I think I was ovulating (haven't resorted to peeing on sticks yet)- is this an ovulation "thing"?

What's the approved conception position?!
