period after MC

I had a mc in Jan and DH and I decided to try straight away. I did a test after the mc and it was negative.

My period arrived one day late but I had been testing anyway so knew I wasn't pg however my period felt very much like my mc in that I had a lot of cramping through out the entire period which is something I never had before (I would normally have strong period pain for about half an hour to indicate my period was coming then nothing), a lot of bleeding and just generally feeling drained.

I had very strong pg symptoms though (that I know could be period coming but I've never previously had them with a period, only pg).

Just wondered if anyone else has had this? Will my periods go back to normal (i.e. not massively cramping each month and ridiculously hormonal! I knew I wasn't pg I had been testing but I cried all day when my period arrived which surprised me)

Yes, I had exactly the same. Even went to my gp because it was so different!

Hi Sooky - Sorry to hear of your loss. I had a mc last year and was advised to wait until after I'd had my next period to ttc because it allows the body to shed any tissue left behind from the mc and also to expect it to be heavier. All returned to normal the following month. Good luck! :)

babblington didn't occur to me to go the gp i was just a bit like ffs, hope it's not going to be like this all the time now!

Inshock Yes I was advised to wait but I was impatient and I'm 36 so really just wanted to crack on Blush although the MW didn't say why to wait but it does make sense now.

I had this too, and my pregnancy with DD, now 26, dated from that post mc period.

Hi Sooky, I am on my second period after my mc which I had a christmas. This one is back to normal thank goodness! My first period was quite different to usual, heavier and longer. The doctor said this would be the case, or least that it would be different from usual. Sometimes it's because if there is any blood or products retained from the mc it will come away with the normal period, that could explain the cramping etc. Did you have a scan after the mc?

thanks yummy, no I wasn't offered a scan only told to do a pg test once the mc had finished which came back negative.

I was going through the EPU as I'd been having pains as well on my left side and had blood taken so I knew it was going to happen as my levels were dropping.

I actually haven't told my gp that I mc - do I need to make an appointment to tell them?

Sooky - The EPU should/will write to your GP. Bit disappointed to hear you weren't offered a scan. I was under the EPU as I started to bleed on way to work and went to A&E, had a scan heartbeat detected (6/7 weeks) and had follow up scan 2 weeks later and heartbeat gone so waited for nature to take its course. I was then offered a scan by the EPU once mc completed to make sure everything was passed and cervix had closed.

Sooky/Yummy - I'm 40 so if you're cracking on I've got my partner practically chained to the bed! :D

Sooky, Inshock is right the EPU should write to your GP. They wanted to give me a follow-up scan to make sure I hadn't retained anything as it can cause complications if you don't have a complete miscarriage. See how you get on, if you continue to have pain or notice anything unusual then I would go back and ask for a scan. Otherwise you will probably be fine and next period should be back to normal - hooray!! :)
Inshock, sorry to hear about your mc too. It's so tough, to think this is what we are put on this earth to do it shouldn't be this hard.

thanks, I really didn't fancy having to book an appointment to tell GP. I keep receiving notifications about scan/mw appointments etc even though I called and cancelled them. The first two letters I was a bit Shock at but by the third I was a little pissed as the mw had also rang me twice and left stroppy messages about missing appointments I had already cancelled!

Right, I will wait to see what next period is like and if it's still not normal I will ask for a scan. We are continuing TTC this month so fingers crossed there won't be any period to compare Smile

Inshock with DD we literally only seriously tried for a few days and I managed to get pregnant but with this time as I'm older we've been doing it every other day...DH loved the sound of that until 2 months in the poor man is exhausted!

Hi Sooky your post is exactly what I'm going through right now. Had mmc in January and this is the first period and was wondering just how different this period is going to be compared with my pre-mc ones. So far it feels a lot like the pains I had after my ERPC and the blood is very different in colour, etc. I'm hoping it doesn't last for days on end and hoping I don't get as emotional as this every period as my anger the past week has been so bad Blush

Fingers crossed it all goes back to normal next month or there's good news and we'll not have to worry about AF's for a while!
