Me and my partner have been trying to conceive for 6 months now. I am beginning to think there is something wrong as we are both young and healthy. Neither of us drink or take drugs or anything like that. We have a healthy lifestyle and have been trying at least once a day to you know what!! I was wondering how long it takes on average? This would be my first baby and I am getting impatient it takes so long ;-( should I go and see my GP or wait a little longer? Thanks guys reply if you can x

Hi OP. I have questions!

How old are you?
Are your periods regular?
Did you start trying as soon as you stopped the pill?
Have you done any OPK sticks to check if you're ovulating?
When you say every day, do you mean every day throughout the month or during your fertile period in the middle of the month?

Amymay01 · 29/01/2014 16:06

I am 18 years old nearly 19, my periods are regular give or take a day or two, yes my fiancé and I (20) decided last year that we would try for a baby and since then we have been doing it every day throughout the month more so over what I believe is my fertile period (14 days after last period??) I haven't done an OPK stick what is one of those can I get them from the pharmacy?
Thank you :-)

Well the pill can take a long while to get out of your system (up to 6 mths) so I wouldn't start panicking.

Also it's likely as you're so young that the Dr will tell you to try for a full year before seeking extra help. Be prepared for this.

OPKs are just little wee sticks that show a line when you're ovulating so you can make sure you're DTD at the right time to conceive. Sometimes they can indicate if you're ovving late or not at all.
I got a massive bag of cheapies of Amazon but you can get them from Boots etc or a supermarket.

HTH.

If you have been starting the every day at 14 days past the beginning of your period (sorry if I have misunderstood) it is very possible that you are missing the window. If you mean 14 days past the end then you are almost definitely missing it.

As an example, I ovulate about 12 days from the first day of my last period and an egg is viable for about 24 hours so if I started at day 14 it would be basically impossible for me to conceive.

The most fertile can vary from person to person.
Usual for 28 day cycle would be 14.
But could be up to 18 or later if the time after ovulation is shorter.
So for a 34day cycle could be anywhere from 14 to 24 possibly
Coming off the pill can take a while for periods to sort out but within a couple of days sounds quite good
It can take a while to get pg can be normal to take over a year.
You can get ovulation predictor sticks from pharmacies.
They work well it seems for most people but it only says the hormones have increases so you should ovulate not guarantees that you have.
If you have no specific concerns ie irregular periods, or excess hair, and weight or history of pcos or hypothroidism in the family i would try for a few months with opks and then see what you think
Some people suggest different techniques ie every other day to get best quality.
I think drs could make you wait a while for investigations due to your age but i really have no idea.

Hi everyone thank you for taking time to reply. What I mean is that we have been making love every day for 6 months so I don't know how I could miss the fertile window sorry if that is tmi!! Thanks for the advice about the pill taking up to 6 months to get out if my system maybe that is what it is! And oh yes I have heard of the ovulation tests I will see if I can get some off amazon! We will keep trying with that in mind if it sounds normal not to conceive straight away I had no idea it was all so technical! We will stick with healthy lifestyle and every night or every couple of nights. I have seen tests that my partner can take to check his sperm count is normal and go from there! Thanks again for all your help it is much appreciated :-) x

Ah in that case it's probably just the pill - give it some time!

If you're having sex every day throughout your cycle I wouldn't bother with ovulation tests although it might give you some peace of mind I suppose.

Good luck!

The pill actually leaves your system very quickly after taking the last tablet.

I also think the GP will not want to refer you until you have been ttc for 12 months without success. Both of you at that time should be tested further to see where any potential problem lies.

Bumpforme2014 · 29/01/2014 18:44

Amy I would get the OPKs off Amazon so that you can check you are ovulating. As long as you are then don't worry it will happen eventually you are young and time is on your side.
