Hi, this is my first cycle of ttc. Wondered if anyone out there with better knowledge than I have could shed some light on my kits and sticks situation.

I bought a load of cheapie OPKs off amazon. There was nothing doing til cd21 when i had a positive. That was last Saturday. The opk has been negative since but then had another positive this morning. Did a(nother) pregnancy test and nada.

What are these hormones carousing through my system?! Is it normal?! Thanks

A strong positive reading on an OPK when your period is due can indicate pregnancy. It may just be that your HCG levels aren't strong enough to actually be picked up on an actual pregnancy test yet.

I got my BFP after I rushed out to buy a HPT when an OPK showed a strong positive reading. I was really confused and posted on here about it - which is when I learnt it can mean pregnancy.

The best of luck Smile

There is a rise in LH just before your period arrives, perhaps you are picking this up?

LH is the hormone that the OPKs are detecting. That is why using an opk as a pregnancy test is a waste of time. Since by the time the opk shows a true positive, the pregnancy test would be positive. And a nearly positive result is just the pre-menstration rise in LH. I hope this helps.

I would suggest saving your money and avoid peeing on sticks for a few days if you can resist!

LH and HCG are extremely similar hormones to the point where OPK sticks cannot differentiate between them. If urine contains either HCG or LH then the OPK result will show as a positive.

A home pregnancy test is the only way of knowing for definite though that it's HCG and not LH that your OPK is detecting.
