Weight and pregnancy

Hiya,
Just been mulling over this and wondered if anyone had any experiences to share...
My BMI is 31, I had lost a fair bit of weight before Christmas but put a little back on. I was hoping to get bmi below 30 before TTC but know it might take us a while so wanted to start trying - we have the last two or three months. This is our first proper month.
I am on track to have a BMI of around 30.5 before I would be pregnant this month anyway but wondering what I would do about eating once pregnant? I know you are not meant to diet but obviously wouldn't want to eat unhealthily.
I know I'm rambling and the sensible thing would be just to wait until a healthy BMI but I've always struggled with my weight.

I'm 12 weeks pregnant and had a BMI of about 30.2 at my booking in appointment last week. I know this sounds hypocritical but I would loose a bit more weight before TTC if you possibly can.

This is my second pregnancy and although I wasn't that much lighter last time round, I am really feeling the effects of being overweight this time.
I have really bad acid reflux (obviously might still have this if thin but feel that my weight can't be helping) and am starting to suffer from pelvic girdle pain already. Pregnancy is hard enough on the body and tiring enough without the added weight.

I believe, with your midwives consent, that you can follow Slimming World. Not something I've done, or know anyone that has but if you felt it was beneficial you could look into it?

That way you could start the plan now, but carry it on if you did conceive.

(That is, if you have the money and personal circs etc etc etc)

My bmi was 35 in my first pregnancy and I had a totally complication free pregnancy and delivery. BMI is now 34.4 and I'm ttc no.2 When I fall I plan to continue with slimming world as it works and is safe during pregnancy. Obviously a high bmi is not ideal, but I'm not sure I'd wait in you situation.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
bump good to hear your positive experience :) I am young and quite active (a Nursery Teacher) so finding it hard to accept I am obese in the first place. I think I'll stick to trying to lose weight and TTC.

After much deliberation, if I haven't already conceived... We're going to stop trying and give it a month. Not really happy with it but stressing about the fact I'm obese and how it could affect things.

Op I think if you're between 20-30 then you'll be okay but if you're over 40 before bfp you may be deemed high risk by the midwife and have slightly different care. (Can't have baby in midwife led unit etc.) I stand to be corrected but I think this is the case as on booking in form it asks bmi and if it's under 30 (and above 20) this is not necessarily a reason not to ttc, that decision is yours and dps! Good luck Smile

Feelingfatty · 07/01/2014 19:36

Sorry meant over 30 (bmi)

Treaclepie19 · 07/01/2014 19:44

Thank you, yeah that's the thing. My BMI is 31 at the moment.
I may conceive anyway from dtd this month but if not will leave it until I am under 30. Just absolutely gutted and wish I had really considered weight as an issue before TTC this month.

It's not very much weight to lose to bring it under 30, a stone or two? I'm sure you'll do it and if you're already had your bfp before then then it's meant to be Grin

Treaclepie19 · 07/01/2014 21:52

I only need to lose 8lb to be under 30 but obviously would like to be a bit more under than that. Haha yeah thats what DH said.
I'm doing well so far anyway so even if i do get BFP this month I should be down to 30.5.

Well sounds like you're doing a great job well done you SmileSmile

Treaclepie19 · 08/01/2014 16:40

Thank you :) Obviously i just want the best start possible but wishing we could still be trying this month.

Good luck with your journey. I hope you get the result you want. I'm hoping for a bfp this month and will stick to Slimming world forever to get my BMI to a healthy level. Even with a high BMI I'm hopeful for a healthy pregnancy.

Treaclepie19 · 10/01/2014 21:07

Thank you :)
I think the only time it's really a problem is if you are unhealthy/don't get enough nutrients.
I'm just scared of what the doctor would say haha. I hate them moaning about my weight.

Just checking in, I was aiming to lose 2lb this week and lost 4lb :) which means my bmi is now 30.6 (from 31.3).
