Odds of getting pregnant 1st month TTC

Hi everyone,

So me and my DP are going to start TTC in jan .. (Seems like a lifetime away)

I'm 21 and he is 26.. So fairly young.

I was wondering if anyone knew on average how long it should/could take us to get pregnant?

I ask because we haven't even started trying yet and the thought of how long it could take makes me anxious. I can't imagine what I'll be like when we are trying.

How the whole process could make me feel is making me nervous! Silly I know.

When me and DH decided to try for our first we expected it to take 6-9mths, I came off the pill and caught straight away, didn't even have a period

I was 32 he was 23.

Hi Lollzy!

I feel exactly the same as you!! This is our first month of ttc and so anxious that it might take us ages. I'm a bit of a control freak and just want it to work out at the time I have planned. Not that I wouldn't be happy any month but I don't like waiting. Me and DH are both 26 so fairly young and hope that helps.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us!

Apparently 30% of women get pregnant in the first month of trying. Possibly higher for you as you're still very young. I had mentally prepared myself for a year or so of trying (worst case) but got pregnant immediately (at 35), which was a bit of a shock tbh. You can't plan for it so there's not much point in stressing about it, just enjoy the shagging!

We've started trying early (we were planning in January). We DTD around 20 times last month (notes on period/ovulation tracking app), no BFP but are hoping it will take no more than 6-9months maximum.

Trying not to get stressed or anxious about it all, think worrying could make it take longer.

Age is relevant but fertility more so.

I was like you. Started TTC at 25 and thought I'd just get pregnant first or second month, like my mum and all the women in my family had. By month four I started to get anxious. By 2 years and IVF later I thought it would never happen.

The thing is, you don't know until you try. For me it seemed like every other person in the world that I knew got pregnant first month. It's just not true.

We were a young and very healthy couple. Didn't make a jot of difference to us!

What you can't do is sit and get anxious about it before you've even started. That's just silly! Oh and if you do get pregnant quickly, don't gloat about it ;)

It's nice to hear from people shoot did happen first time for. We're in the 2ww now so just got to wait it out. We dtd like there was no tomorrow so I hope it works, otherwise I won't know what to do differently next month!

Ha ha.

Took us 7 years and a huge amount of money in fertility treatment to have our twins (now 4).

Found out yesterday that I am pregnant accidentally. 1 month after having my implant removed. We thought we couldn't have any more.

It's nice to hear other peoples stories .. Thanks for replying :)

I think I'm scared of the unknown which is why I can be controlling so 2ww will be a nightmare!

Looking forward to all the dtd I have to say.. But I can see if becoming stressful. Most couples don't dtd every other day surely!! Me n my dp certainly don't.

Who has the time or energy? We will be doing this when TTC though.. I'll make the time!

I've got everything crossed things work out!

roses Me too! Though no implant to take out! Ours was MF and so figured it was nigh on impossible and I am still bf and hadn't had my period. Surprise!!

1st month with DD, this time were on month 3 and I'm on a TWW. Doubting its our month though as only managed to DTD once in my fertile window. still got my fingers crossed though!

I got pregnant three times in the first month. I remember with DS2 the dates. My last period was November 5th which, fireworks day. I got pregnant a couple of weeks later and he was born mid August.

i think the first month it's hard to imagine that it won't just happen. "hey! we dtd a lot! that's what you have to do so why wouldn't it work?" felt very disappointing to get my first bfn and even when af arrived i managed to convince myself for one night that it was an implantation bleed (it wasn't). remember though that even if you dtd a lot, the odds of getting pregnant are between 20 and 25%, so even if it doesn't happen it doesn't mean that you didn't do it right or that you didn't do something you could have to make it happen, just that it wasn't your month. and then do it all again the next month and hope for the best! good luck : )

I was on the pill for nearly 10 years and we were pregnant with DS1 within 6 weeks.

Don't stress and have fun dtd (because once the baby arrives you'll never do it again!)

Thanks for all your replies everyone!

I really do need to just try and relax! I think once we have actively started TTC ill chill out a bit it's just the wait to start (although it's only a few weeks) and then the wait to conceive. Having a date to start trying has just given me lots of time to research, ask questions and in some cases make myself worry that it could be like a year!

But you're right everyone is different and we can only do so much to try and make it happen!

I'm a control freak and the ttc part drove me bananas at the beginning. I planned our dtd,cried if we missed a day, charted,obsessed and researched. The ladies on here will tell you how bad it got. So this month, I have literally stopped thinking about it. We dtd when we feel like it, don't discuss ttc, don't chart and I don't symptom spot. That's the only advice I can give you!

DH and I are both 23. I got pregnant the first month. I had been tracking my periods for a fair few months on an app and had a fairly good idea of when I ovulated. You don't need to DTD every other day for the whole month but will increase your chances if you do the week you ovulate. Try not to stress about it and just enjoy it! Good luck!

Btw if you're still waiting to TTC, are you up to date with smear test, vaccinations etc? You should get that sort of thing out of the way before you get pg.

lollzy think I've replied to your posts before cause it sounds like we are in a similar boat/ similar age etc... I work in the medical profession and all the evidence (NICE guidelines or guidance from the NHS suggests that if you are having sex 2-3 times per week, leading a healthy lifestyle and have cut down your alcohol intake then you have an approximate chance of 25% per month ... That figure of course assumes that neither partner has any known fertility issues.

And of course, you're meant to relax although that is still a mystery to me!!

I'm in my 4th 2ww and hoping against hope that this is my month and I'll get my Christmas bfp but having said that, I just feel the usual PMT coming on with no other symptoms to speak of!!! Grrrrr.

Oh, and the other thing I would say is that it can take up to 12 months for a healthy couple with no issues to conceive purely because that's how long it took!!

I reassure myself by thinking that time is on my side, so maybe it would help you to think like that too.

Oh and make sure you've already started taking folic acid or appropriate multi-vitamin as ideally that should start 3 months prior to conception.

Me and my husband got pregnant on our first month of trying. I am 30 and he is 31. I had been using the Mirena Coil for contraception and fell pregnant in just under 5 weeks of it being removed. We had only DTD twice: once 3 days before suspected ovulation and again on the day of suspected ovulation.

Our IVF consultant told us the chance in each month is about 25% when you are 25 or younger. The chances decrease as you get older (boo!). Good luck!!

Autumnleaves thank you - I thought it was about 20-25% but I wasn't sure as the internet can be full of rubbish sometimes! I hope you get your BFP you have been waiting for this month!

I started taking folic acid a while ago so that is definitely one box I have ticked :)

I really do wish I was a more laid back person.. relaxing isn't my strong point! I'll definitely do my best, try and keep busy during the 2ww's etc. I think it will really help to have people to talk to during this time as well.

We haven't told any friends or family members - so coming on here and talking about it is so good! In my head im shouting it off the rooftops that we are TTC.
