KY jelly, how does it alter the sperm dna?

Just read KY jelly may alter a sperm's dna and I have gotten pregnant using this and I am freaking out.

How can it affect the dna and my baby? Does anyone know more on this study?

Thank you

I know it affects their movement, but I have never heard about dna. Are you sure that's right? Surely it would be a banned product if it did that? And isn't that what scientists have spent years doing, so I can't see how a simple product like KY could have cracked it :)

Maybe someone else will know more.

Congrat's on your bfp, but I really wouldn't worry about the lube

Where did you read that? I've never heard of it and just from knowing a bit of science it seems unlikely to be true....

Was it a reputable source?

Ok, just found the study (can't link on phone). Ky jelly has been shown to damage sperm DNA, but really if there was any serious damage the odds are that particular sperm would not have been able to fertilise the egg, or the pregnancy would have ended very early due to genetic defect.

the study was done in relation to people having difficulty conceiving. If you've got as far as getting pregnabt, and far enough along to know you're pregnant, then it's highly unlikely there could be any actual damage to that sperm.

Try not to worry - easier said than done I know, but I really think the risk here is minuscule. It's like drinking alcohol, eating soft cheese etc - it's not ideal if you're trying for a baby or pregnant, but we've all done it and usually it works out fine.

I conceived DD using a normal lube (we'd bought pre-seed but I conceived before we got a chance to use it) and my perfectly normal 3 year old is talking my ear off as I type. Smile
