Confused about IUD removal

I'm having my IUD removed next week (it's not the hormonal one) and the Drs surgery have advised me to used condoms for a week beforehand and until the end of my next period due to the increased risk of ectopic pregnancy.

But I thought the risk was only increased while the IUD was actually in, and that the point of the non-hormonal IUD is that you can start trying right away after removal? Using condoms for a month after having it out seems fairly counter-intuitive to me. Does anyone have experience with this?
