Spotting followed by AF most times, anyone then had spotting followed by BFP?

Hello all, firstly I'd like to say I've been a lurker on here since I started ttc and I have found this forum to be my saviour at times (never knew how mad this would send me!) so thanks to everyone for helping me so far.

I've been trying for 14 months, both myself and dp have had initial tests done and everything came back as normal, no further action.

Some months I get a bit of spotting before my AF is due (an irritating warning that the witch is on her way). I just wanted to know, has anyone had this before but instead of their AF showing after spotting they got their BFP?

Any help/advice/examples will be appreciated!

Have a read on another thread I am on "newbies an experts" a few of us have a moan on there and a BFP was put on yesterday where spotting was mistaken for AF!

Morganlove · 15/10/2013 18:48

Thanks for that! I'll take a look. I don't get spotting every month but when I do I try not to think it might be implantation as when AF turns up it's just so upsetting. This time though my AF has usually arrived by now following the spotting, but I'm trying so hard not to get excited this time. Think I'm just having a super long cruel cycle!

What tests have you both had done to date?. It sounds like you have not been investigated thoroughly enough, what did they say about the spotting for instance?. I ask this as spotting between periods should always be checked out further. Sometimes it is due to cervical erosion or perhaps low progesterone levels.

Cosmos1 · 15/10/2013 19:02

Attila I have been on these boards for yonks and often seen your posts. Do you have any wisdom about when spotting is caused by low progesterone, or at least an imbalance. Do you know of any usually prescribed treatment?

Morganlove · 15/10/2013 19:35

I had day 5 and day 21 blood tests done, when they read out the results there seemed to be endless things they checked which were all 'fine/normal - no further action'. Dp had sperm test done.

When I get spotting it's only ever a day or two before AF arrives, never at any other time. I didn't think that would be a problem but will get it checked out if it continues. The longest gap I had between spotting and AF, the spotting happened on a Sat night then AF arrived on a Tues morning. This time I had a little spotting Sat night, so I was keen to see what was happening today and nothing, (tmi) but when I wipe it's as clear as anything, no red/brown/pink tinge.

Days just seem to last so long when you're waiting to either get AF or BFP!!!

HI Morgan I get spotting for 2 days then usually AF starts. spotting started on Saturday but this morning was tailing off. So I POAS and BFP :)

Good luck, I hope you get your BFP soon, 14 months must be tough so all the best!

Morganlove · 15/10/2013 21:09

That's great news misshoohaa - congratulations!!!! I cannot imagine how good it feels getting a BFP! So pleased for you. Had a chat with dp (who thankfully is so easy to talk to about this stuff) and decided if there's no AF by the weekend we will test again. I did a test on Sat (before spotting) and this was negative. Would so like to be in the same position as you, it has to be my time one month, right?!?!

OP posts:
misshoohaa · 15/10/2013 21:50

It will be don't worry! it's a never ending rollercoaster. Once you get your BFP, then it's the 12 week milestone, then the 23 week milestone, then full term then they are born and it's a whole other level of worry!

Best of luck and good luck waiting to the weekend to test, you must have more will power than me x

Morganlove · 16/10/2013 06:25

It certainly is a roller coaster! Never thought it would take this long, or turn me this mental!!!

I'd this your first misshoohaa or do you have children already? I'm very much entering into the unknown.

Having to hold onto every bit of will power I have to wait until the weekend believe me! I now only have CB tests (that I bought a year ago 'just in case' - ha!), used the FR ones over the past few months. I don't want to have to buy more and I feel before I've tested too soon before so really trying to leave it until I'm really late. Day 37 today so am later than I've ever been (longest was 34, usually around 30) but I ovulated later this month due to a bad cold. Keep your fingers crossed for me please!!! x

Morgan I am in the same position as you (almost). Most months my spotting starts as early as 8 days after OV (very upsetting and worrying) and other months (very rarely) only a couple of days before.

This month though I had one spot (always mixed with 'normal' CM) but I'm sure I got a VERY faint line on an HPT this morning.

I am on the waiting list for an Laparoscopy and Dye test under GA because they found Antibodies for Chlamydia via a blood test. All my blood tests (day 1-3 and day 21) came back as fine aswell as did recent smears and other cervical swabs (including chlamydia).

I have suffered with cervical erosions though since I was about 19 (so 20 years) but not sure if they're triggered cyclically, because we never DTD after OV, so hoping that maybe mine are triggered by hormone changes. They didn't even mention those as a cause for the spotting, in fact didn't seem worried about the spotting at all (whereas I think it's significant).

I am hoping that you get answers soon. We've been TTC DC2 since April last year.

alyant79 · 16/10/2013 16:24

morgan i've been pregnant twice - first time I had such heavy spotting that I thought it was AF, went out, got drunk and then 3 weeks later suddenly vomited up my breakfast. Nearly fell off the toilet when i saw that super strong BFP!
I had never previously noticed any spotting in the lead up to AF.

Second time I was pregnant I had no spotting at all. Unfortunately I miscarried and since then (8 months of trying) I keep getting spotting for 1 or 2 days before AF (like katniss from around 8dpo). Each time I think - oooh maybe IB?!?!? not so far though :(
If I were you I'd test again

Morganlove · 16/10/2013 18:13

Thanks for the replies. I really hope katniss that it was a positive you got this morning, they say on here (been stalking the forums for ages!) that a faint line is still a line! Hope when you next test it is stronger. Also hope the tests at the hospital go ok for you.

Sorry to hear about your mc alyant I hope you aren't trying for too much longer. Cannot make out the spotting when it happens, since a bit on Sat night I've not had any more and this is the longest time so far between spotting and period.

I will test again at the weekend I think, hate the disappointment of a negative so want to leave it as long as possible - considering part of me is just wanting to run to the loo and do a test now, but I just don't want to get that negative. Trying times!!!

Morgan - it's my second, I have DS who is 2.5 nearly. We didn't try with him, he was a bit of a surprise so 6 months TTC for number 2 has been a bit of a midfield.

Exciting times for you, so is AF officially late now? Fingers crossed for you!

x

mortonstoe · 16/10/2013 23:32

I commenced my pre-af spotting after I had ds. It could start as early as 8 dpo too. It took me two years to conceive dd. Had two early mc also. I had short cycles, around 25 days. I definitely thought there was a problem with my progesterone as my luteal phase was so crap. The month I conceived the spotting started at about 7dpo- I thought it was my usual spotting and I was out again but the spotting never got heavier, and I got a faint line at 9dpo. Never had the spotting before my first pregnancy, never had a reason for it. We were just starting down the line of investigations when I got my bfp- I was actually waiting on my lap dye appointment. Best of luck to you Smile

Morganlove · 17/10/2013 06:34

Yes, AF is now officially late and currently no sign since a little bit of spotting on Sat night. But also no pregnancy symptoms but it might be a bit early for that? Who knows, fingers crossed AF stays away and I can test at the weekend - only two more days to go (no way I'm waiting til Sunday!!!)

Congrats on the BFP morton, or was that some time ago?! I wonder if knowing you were going for investigations made you relax more? This month will be our first month trying since we both got the all clear from our GP tests and we both said we felt much more relaxed knowing everything technically 'worked', fingers tightly crossed it actually did work......!!!

Morning all, Morgan any news??

Well I did another HPT this morning and no line at all. No real spotting though either - one spot yesterday afternoon and some coloured CM last night but that's all. But then I always get that, on-off, on-off until AF finally turns up.

Having said that, it looks like it's a blessing in disguise as I'm likely to be made redundant soon and there's no way that we could afford another child then. Plus, saw a newborn the other day and didn't feel at all broody.

So I guess I have DD who has just started reception and if I lose my job I can use the redundancy to pay off our outstanding loans and then retrain.

Anyway, sorry to hijack. Good luck Morgan!! Smile

misshoohaa · 17/10/2013 10:42

Oh sorry about the NeGative Kat. I had a negative 3 days prior to AF due date and then BFP a few days later.

Morgan - you have amazing will power!

Don't worry about the lack of symptoms, I didn't get any till about w6 with DS1 and currently none with this pregnancy other than a bit of nausea lightheadedness at about 7 days post ovulation but that could have been a virus as it was barely a fertilised egg!

Wishing you lots of luck x

Morganlove · 17/10/2013 18:59

Sorry to hear about the negative Kat, I hope it's not all over for you. Test again in a few days if AF still doesn't show up?

No real news from me. Just went to the toilet though and (warning potential tmi) there was a bit of pale brown staining on my panty liner. Nothing when I wiped though. Thinking maybe as it looks like the beginning of spotting again that AF might be on the way. Will see what happens tomorrow. On day 38 today though and never usually gone over around a 30 day cycle (apart from a freak 34 day one). If AF does show up I will be devastated though because as much as I try not to I am starting to get my hopes up.

Fingers and toes crossed for you Morgan. Yes, the month I got my bfp I had told Dh that I was giving up ttc for a few months, felt it was really stressing me and it was becoming all consuming. So I decided to renovate the hall in our house and sanded down the stairs which had layers of lead paint from the 40s, took my mind off things and low and behold bfp.

alyant79 · 18/10/2013 09:19

fingers crossed morgan. what did today bring?
Have you ever tried to predict when you ovulate by using ov sticks or temping? I find it useful as my ov day tends to vary a bit, but AF usually arrives consistently on 11 dpo.

morton i really need to find something like that to take my mind off the whole ttc malarky. sometimes i really feel like giving up!

Morganlove · 18/10/2013 11:29

Today so far has just brought some pale brown/pink when I wipe. So confused, after the spotting on Sat I had this for a day then nothing but now it's started again.

I use the CBFM and according to that I got my peak on the 27th and 28th Sept so we were like rabbits before during and after these two days.

Feel like my AF is coming now but not sure if that's just in my head - I have no cramping but just feel different 'down there' but it may just be because I'm more aware of things. Been to the loo many many times today, not that I keep needing a wee, but just to keep checking.

I was going to test tomorrow but might now leave it until Sunday, that is if there is no sign of AF before then.

Anyone else got any news? Kat - has your AF turned up yet or have you tested again?

Oh, it's all so emotional. Spent most of last night in tears.

Hello I’m a long time lurker too and have always found these boards to be helpful. We’ve been trying since June 2012 and I always have spotting before AF. I think I am finally realising that each month it happens it is not implantation bleeding (for me anyway). I spot anywhere between 3 and 7 days before AF. I also get cramps that start about 5dpo (which seem to be worse since I miscarried last year) so I only have around 5 days of hope in the 2ww.

I did get pregnant this time last year, the only symptom I had was a lack of spotting. I miscarried that pregnancy but it was a missed miscarriage so I don’t think it was due to low progesterone. I have read about lots of women who experienced spotting before periods each month but had no problems getting pregnant which gives me hope.

I have been to the GP because I was worried about the spotting, she examined me and said I had cervical erosion which can cause spotting (and also mid cycle bleeding which I haven’t had). I am going back next week to see if she will send me for blood tests because we have now been trying for 12 cycles since the miscarriage. I do wonder if I have low progesterone but I get lots of other symptoms in the 2ww that I think are caused by progesterone (sore, heavy boobs, nausea, tiredness, bloated) so I’m not sure.

I hope this month is good news for you Morganlove, your day 5 and day 21 blood test results sound good and doesn’t suggest your spotting is caused by low progesterone. I agree that it’s better to wait until you are officially late because that BFN is horrible to see. It is positive that your cycle is so much longer this month. Fingers crossed for you.

Congratulations misshoohaa – it’s great to hear a positive result from a fellow spotter!

Katnisscupcake – my GP wasn’t a bit worried by my spotting either. It sounds like we may have similar if you have cervical erosion. Good news that your blood tests were fine. Sorry that your test turned out to be negative this time.

Alyant79 – sorry to hear about your miscarriage and that it has taken 8 months so far. I feel your pain. Fingers crossed you get your BFP soon.

I agree that I wish I could find something to help me ‘relax’ and forget about TTC – we’ve tried going on an expensive holiday, I went for (and got) a new job, we’ve tried not tracking ovulation and just DTD…nothing. Wish we could ‘give up’ for a month but time is ticking away and I just don’t think we can.

misshoohaa · 19/10/2013 15:17

Hi Morgan - any news? X

Morganlove · 19/10/2013 15:47

I'm out this month. Really felt like AF was coming when I woke up so didn't bother testing. Good job as a couple of hours later I got cramps and now I'm in full 'flow' of my period. Utterly gutted. 40 day cycle, why so long this time? Usually I'm 28 - 30 days. This cycle was just long enough to really make me start to feel this might be it. Just so cruel. I did have a thick cold earlier on this month which I thought made me ov later than usual (day 19 on CBFM rather than usually 15 or 16), that's when I got my peak but maybe the actual ov was later than that?

So, it all starts again. I really hate this. Just want it to work, just the once will do me. If I'm ever lucky enough to get pregnant I've no idea if I could go through the months and months of disappointment again.

Sorry, post is very 'woe is me'. I'll pick myself up soon and be back on track. Just need 24 hours to wallow. Trying to take my mind off it by blitzing the bathroom, followed by the whole house. May not be pregnant but will have a sparkly house!

Any news from anyone else? Hope there are some more BFPs on this post to keep misshoohaa company. How is it going misshoohaa? Any symptoms yet? Might just start living my dreams through you! x

misshoohaa · 19/10/2013 22:32

Oh Morgan. That's rubbish, I was really hoping it was your month x

I was about to start using maca powder which I have heard good things about, plus I also saw in my super Neil's yard remedy books about avocados and pineapple (particularly for men) is meant to be fertility boosting. I was also about to start acupuncture. My point being that I think taking charge of something has helped me get my BFP. I quit my job this month and the relief of that and our expanding family business was taking my mind of the TTC.
It's a cruel game though!

No symptoms yet, still sinking in to be honest, I am lucky enough to have a DS who is 2 so he keeps me busy!

Keep us up to date with your TTC tales, it's good to share!

Also try some mindfulness meditation - that's meant to be very helpful if your heads getting a bit out of control with the whole TTC game! X
